“Violence is often associated with illegal drugs and firearms, and all four of these arrests occurred in residential neighbourhoods where families reside,” said Sgt. Rich DeJong, of the EDGE Unit.
“These arrests highlighted excellent teamwork between members from many sections within the Edmonton Police Service.”
Firearms, stolen property seized
On April 17, 2015, members of the EPS Drug and Gang Enforcement Unit (EDGE), supported by various other EPS sections including Tactical, executed a warrant at a north-end residential address near 126 Avenue and 70 Street.
A total of 15 firearms were seized, five of which are alleged to have been stolen. Firearms apprehended included barreled rifles (9), sawed-off .22 caliber rifles (3), sawed-off shotguns (2), long-barrel shotgun (1), ammunition (3,500 rounds) and a bulletproof vest.
Investigators also seized a stolen motorcycle and quad estimated to be worth $18,000 found on the property.
A 38-year-old male and a 32-year-old female are facing a combined total of 60 firearm and child protection charges, the latter of which fall under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
Marijuana, meth and cocaine seized
On April 24, 2015, EDGE members converged on a south-side residence near 25 Avenue and 50 Street.
Upon executing warrants for firearms and drugs, investigators seized:
- marijuana (713 gms)
- methamphetamine (25 gms)
- cocaine (7.7 gms)
Firearms seized included a .22 caliber rifle with homemade silencer, a 12-gauge shotgun, ammunition (582 rounds) and collapsible batons (two) were also seized.
A 30-year-old male and 26-year-old female are facing more than 30 drug and firearm-related offences. In addition, the accused female was charged under Drug Endangered Children’s Act legislation for having a child in a dangerous environment.
Large quantity of Fentanyl, heroin seized
On April 25, 2015, EDGE investigators executed drug and firearm warrants at a residence on Richfield Road in Millwoods.
Once inside, investigators seized:
- Fentanyl (2,296 pills of 80 mg each) with an estimated street value of $115,000.
- Heroin (263 gms) with an estimated street value of close to $85,000.
- Marijuana (13.725 lbs) with an estimated street value of close to $29,000.
- Phenacetin (4,380 gms) with an estimated street value of $20,000.
- Ketamine (259 gms) with an estimated street value of $10,400.
- Cocaine Hydrochloride (84 gms) with a street value of $6,400.
- Crack cocaine (23 gms) with an estimated street value of close to $1,200.
Investigators also seized several firearms including a fully automatic MAC 10 machine gun with a 50-round magazine, a pump action 12-gauge shotgun with a 15-round magazine, a 9mm handgun with a six-round magazine, ammunition, a Department of National Defence-issued fragmentation protective vest and close to $10,000 in Canadian currency.
Nathaniel Bradley De Vries, 23, is facing 25 drug and firearm-related offences and breach of existing conditions.
Shotguns, drugs, seized during warrant execution
On April 30, 2015, investigators executed drug and firearm warrants at a west-end residence near 96 Avenue and 156 Street.
Once inside, investigators seized:
- Methamphetamine (8 gms)
- Cocaine (18 gms)
- Hydromorphone pills (16 @ 2 mg each)
Investigators also seized several firearms including a stolen 12-gauge shotgun, a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun, a 410-gauge sawed-off shotgun and ammunition.
Kristopher Renz, 29, is charged with 23 firearm offenses and three CDSA offences.
Christopher Browne, 25, is charged with 11 firearm offences and two CDSA offences.
