Man struck in crosswalk succumbs to injuries; charges laid against driver

A 70-year-old man who was struck in a marked crosswalk in southeast Edmonton last week has died.

At around 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, Apr. 7, 2016, a 70-year-old male was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of 48 Street and Millwoods Road. At the same time, a middle-aged man, driving a GMC 3500 Van, was conducting a left turn (northbound) onto 48 Street when he struck the pedestrian.

On Sunday, Apr. 10, 2016, the 70-year-old man succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Branch has charged the driver, Robert Eugene Labonte, 60, with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failing to obey a stop sign before entering an intersection under the Traffic Safety Act.

This is Edmonton’s 10th traffic fatality of the year.
