Theft from automobile incidents on the rise in Downtown Division

Police are urging motorists to remove all valuables from vehicles after EPS Downtown Division responded to more than double the number of theft from automobile incidents this month in comparison to April 2015.

In April 2016, 91 theft from vehicle occurrences have been reported to Downtown Division, a 111% increase from 43 occurrences reported in April 2015.

Downtown Division officers have responded to 344 reports of items stolen from vehicles this year. The EPS has identified three areas where the majority of the incidents occurred:

  • 100 Avenue, 101-105 Street
  • 108 Avenue, 111-117 Street
  • 112-116 Street, between Jasper Avenue and 103 Avenue

“These are often crimes of opportunity – vehicles left unlocked and valuables left in plain sight,” says Const. Dexx Williams. “To help protect your property, remove all items from the vehicle every time it is left unattended. We continue to see laptops, gym bags, cell phones, sunglasses and loose change left behind and then targeted.”

Prevent theft from your vehicle with the following tips:

  • Always turn off and lock your vehicle.
  • Remove all valuables. Never leave anything in plain sight when you leave your vehicle.
  • Remove all portable accessories, including stereo faceplates and GPS equipment.
  • Using a steering wheel lock and/or alarm can deter theft of and from vehicles.
  • Park in a well-lit, open place.

Anyone who has information about these crimes is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at http://ift.tt/1az8Eve. Theft from vehicle incidents can also be reported through EPS Online Crime Reporting.

STAT arrest leads investigators to cache of firearms and explosives

A 32-year-old Edmonton man is facing 38 drug, firearm and explosive-related charges in connection with a vehicle stop that occurred in the city’s south side Friday evening. Members of the Edmonton Police Service STAT team (Specialized Traffic Apprehension teams) converged on a GMC Yukon vehicle speeding southbound on Wayne Gretzky Drive Friday evening.

Officers subsequently pulled over the vehicle on Calgary Trail just south of the Whitemud, and noticed what appeared to be marijuana sticking out of a backpack on the floor of the back seat. Upon further scrutiny, members discovered a loaded handgun, two loaded magazines, 76 rounds of assorted ammunition, two large hunting knives, an axe and close to six grams of marijuana in or around the backpack.

Post-arrest interviews and a detailed search were conducted with the accused male at Southeast Division, where investigators discovered an improvised explosive device in the backpack. Members of the EPS Bomb Detail were dispatched and detonated the device in the northwest parking lot of the division.

A search warrant was subsequently authorized for a residence near 45 Avenue and Turner Square, where multiple firearms were seized including two loaded pump-action shotguns, three non-restricted rifles, one loaded restricted rife, five high capacity, prohibited rifle magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

During their search, investigators also discovered a second explosive device. As a result, the EPS Bomb Detail was again called on to assist, and successfully detonated the explosive.

Landon Carstairs, 32, has since been charged with 38 drug, firearm and explosive-related offences with additional charges pending.

Parkade break and enters continue to plague city residents

Edmonton Police officers have investigated more than 800 parkade break-and-enter complaints YTD in 2015 and 2016.

The Edmonton Police Service has received 455 parkade break-and-enter complaints between Jan. 1 and April 14, 2015, and another 378 complaints thus far in 2016.

It’s a crime which costs apartment and condo residents millions of dollars in stolen vehicles and valuables every year, says Const. Amanda Trenchard, with the EPS Crime Prevention Unit.

“It’s not uncommon for officers to be investigating several parkade break and enters a day across our city,” says Const. Trenchard. “Criminals are always looking for easy targets, and parkades can offer them a one-stop shopping experience, especially when property isn’t protected.”

In 2015, the EPS received more than 1,300 reports of parkade break and enters.

Apartment and condo residents can ‘target harden” themselves, by taking simple crime prevention measures, says Const. Trenchard.

“Locking your vehicle doors and taking all valuables out of the vehicle and inside your home with you is a good start. If the bad guys don’t see anything that attracts them to break into your vehicle, and you lock your vehicle, then there’s a good chance you won’t become a target,” says Const. Trenchard.

Condo residents are also encouraged to wait until for the door to close, when entering or exiting a parkade, Trenchard noted.

“These are often crimes of opportunity. If a criminal recognizes that residents of a building aren’t waiting nearby until the garage door closes, or they’re not paying attention in their mirrors, then criminals may simply seize the opportunity to slip in behind them.”

Here are some additional tips to keep you and your vehicle safe when parking in a parkade:

  • When entering or exiting an apartment or condominium parkade, always wait for the door to close. Watch for anyone sneaking in and call police if necessary.
  • Regardless of where you park your vehicle, do not leave anything in view.
  • Always lock your vehicle to discourage persons from entering and searching your glove box.
  • Carry your registration and insurance with you. Do not leave it in the car. This will protect you against identity theft.
  • Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • Do not leave a garage door opener in your vehicle. This is quite common in Edmonton, as a thief may use it to break into your house while you are away.
  • Theft of vehicle license plates is common. Anti-theft bolts should be used to secure license plates. These are available at various hardware stores.
  • Never leave a spare key in your vehicle.
  • Consider using a "club" to secure the steering wheel if you have an older vehicle without adequate anti-theft features. You can purchase one from an AMA near you (you don't have to be member).
  • Consider your personal safety. Parkades are often dark and deserted. Know what to do if something happens. The best defense against an attack is awareness and action. If faced with an uncomfortable or dangerous situation, leave the parkade and seek assistance.

Tweet all about it!

The Edmonton Police Service is taking to social media for the next several weeks to educate the public about when to call 911 and when to call the non-emergency line.

“We are once again trying to raise awareness about proper use of 911, as we continue to see errant calls flood our emergency line,” says Insp. Graham Hogg of EPS Police Communications Branch. “The majority of these calls come from citizens who don’t know the difference between an emergency and a non-emergency.”

The Police Service first launched its “Make the Right Call” campaign in 2012, with transit and newspaper ads, and an information brochure in 2013 that was mailed to each home in the city.

From April through June this year, the public will also see some ads on buses, LRTs and transit stations, but the main medium will be the EPS’s social media accounts, which are now key communication tools between the service and the public. Combined, the service has more than 122,000 followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“We hope our social media followers will share and re-Tweet our messages so we can reach as many citizens as possible,” says Insp. Hogg. “We are asking all residents of Edmonton to know the difference between an emergency and a non-emergency, and when it’s appropriate to call 911. By making the right call, you may literally be helping save a life.”

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram followers can share and re-Tweet EPS’s posts with the hashtag #EPS377.

So far this year, the EPS 911 call centre has received 90,034 calls and 36,617 of these calls were not an emergency. In 2015, the EPS had 388,736 calls into 911, and 152,320 of these calls were not emergencies.

“We don’t want to deter people from calling 911 when they really need to, but we want them to remember that not all calls are emergencies and that dialing #377 from their mobile phone will connect them with the non-emergency line,” says Insp. Hogg.

The public can also visit http://ift.tt/20070uv to learn about 911 use.
