Police lay charges in 2015 homicide of Deng Tong

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has laid first-degree murder charges in relation to the 2015 stabbing death of Deng Mathew Garang Tong, 23, of Edmonton.

On Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the EPS responded to a weapons complaint in the area of 102 Street and 107 Avenue where they found two males suffering from stab wounds.

Further information directed Patrol investigators one block away to an apartment at 103 Street and 107 Avenue, where they discovered Tong, a third male, suffering from stab wounds.

EMS transported the 23-year-old male to hospital where he died. Police believe the two incidents were related.

Billy Joe Nelson, 37, and Tyler Strathdee, 27, are both charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder (x3) and aggravated assault (x3).

Nelson and Strathdee are expected to appear in court on April 20, 2016.

This was Edmonton’s third homicide of 2015.
