During the 24-hour enforcement period on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, 1,922 speeding tickets were issued. There were also 373 violations for seatbelt infractions, impaired driving, distracted driving, red light violations, other Traffic Safety Act violations and Criminal Code offences.
These numbers are a slight decrease from the 2,316 violations issued during the November 2015 enforcement blitz.
Excessive speeding is targeted during Operation 24 Hours. One vehicle was recorded travelling nearly twice the posted speed limit – 117 km/h in a 60 km/h zone – in the area of Gateway Boulevard and University Avenue. Another vehicle, travelling 114 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, was stopped near Lessard Road and 51 Avenue. Both drivers were issued a mandatory court appearance.
The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year (such as Operation 24 Hours) to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.
