On Friday, May 22, 2015 at approximately 11: 15 p.m., a West Division patrol officer attempted to make a vehicle stop in the area of 100 Avenue and 185 Street on a BMW535i. Upon activating police emergency lights, the BMW did not stop for police and sped away at high speed. The police officer reported to dispatch that he was not in pursuit of the BMW.

The taxi was carrying two passengers at the time of the collision. All three occupants of the taxi were treated and transported to hospital by EMS. A 51-year-old female passenger succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The other passenger and taxi driver have both been released from hospital.
The driver of the BMW allegedly ran from the scene after the collision but was apprehended by police officers a short distance away. The driver and passenger of the BMW both suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the BMW, James Miller-Laney, 29, is charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, fail to stop following collision with another vehicle (x2), flight from police officer causing death, flight from police officer causing bodily harm, and breach of recognizance.
