Police charge male for attempted murder following violent attack

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 19-year-old male with attempted murder following a violent attack in northwest Edmonton last week.

At approximately 8 p.m., Thursday, April 19, 2018, Northwest Division officers responded to the report of an assault in the area of 120 Street and 130 Avenue.

It was reported to police that a male cab driver picked up two passengers, a male and a female, in the area of 161 Avenue and 124 Street at shortly after 6 p.m. The female reportedly exited the cab in the area of 172 Street and 104 Avenue, while the male continued on with his travels, asking the driver to stop at several other locations.

While operating his taxi cab in the area of 120 Street and 130 Avenue just before 8 p.m., the accused allegedly attacked the driver multiple times with an edged weapon.

Two male citizens walking in the area witnessed the attack and came to the aid of the cab driver. Together, the two citizens removed the suspect male from the taxi cab and, along with the driver, held him at the scene of the altercation until police arrived a short time later.

EMS responded, treated and transported the male cab driver to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released.

“This attack was completely random and unprovoked,” says Acting Staff Sgt. Kevin Brookes “The two citizens who assisted undoubtedly prevented further, serious injuries to the cab driver and likely saved his life.”

Officers continue to investigate.

Brady Alook, 19, has been remanded and is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, uttering threats, possession of a weapon, possession of narcotics, fare by fraud, breach of recognizance (x2) and several outstanding warrants.

The EPS would like to thank the citizens who assisted in this incident.  For their own safety and the safety of those around them, the EPS recommends that anyone witnessing a crime call police immediately.

Charges upgraded in 2016 aggravated assault leading to death of infant

A 2016 case involving the death of a two-month-old baby girl is currently before the Courts.

On July 27, 2016, Brandon Calahoo, now age 22 was arrested and initially charged with aggravated assault after EPS Child Protection Section became involved in an investigation related to a two-month-old female infant who was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

On August 8, 2016, the infant succumbed to her injuries, and EPS Homicide Section became involved in the investigation.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on the infant, but was not immediately able to make a determination about the cause of death. In January 2017, the Medical Examiner confirmed that the cause of death was criminal, at which time the Crown Prosecutor was notified, and upgraded the charges against Calahoo to second degree murder and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The case is currently before the Courts.

Due to the unusual circumstances of this investigation and the long delay between initial charges and upgraded charges, a media release was not issued in January 2017 when charges were upgraded by the Crown. This homicide is included in the 42 homicides that occurred in 2016.

Police arrest and charge youth with human trafficking

The Edmonton Police Service has arrested and charged a male youth allegedly involved in sexually exploiting a girl under the age of 18 for profit.

In late March, police received a tip that a female youth may be involved in the sex trade and was in need of intervention.

On Thursday, April 5, 2018, police attended a location on the city’s south side and found the youth. The female had reportedly been confined at the location for over a week and forced into the local sex trade.  For her safety, she was apprehended under the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act (PSECA) and has since been provided assistance and support through Alberta Children’s Services.

The female was reportedly confined and sexually trafficked by a male youth who she met at a local shopping complex. The two allegedly spent time together for a month and the male showered her with expensive gifts until he held her against her will, and began trafficking her for sex.

Following a thorough investigation the male youth was taken into custody on Wednesday, April 17, 2018. He has since been charged with procuring a person under 18, trafficking of a person under 18 and obtaining material benefit from the sexual service of a person under 18.

“It is often very difficult for those experiencing sexual exploitation or sex trafficking to come forward and ask for the assistance they need,” says Staff Sergeant Dale Johnson with the Human Trafficking and Exploitation Unit.

“If you believe someone has become a victim of sexual exploitation or sex trafficking we encourage you to contact police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information or tips related to sexual exploitation or sex trafficking in the Edmonton area is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Officers help homeless take cover with Project Cape

Edmonton Police Service officers are helping those living on the streets stay dry and warm.

Members of the Community Action Team (CAT) will be handing out capes to the city’s vulnerable citizens as part of a new initiative called Project Cape.

“Those who are forced to live on the streets and are vulnerable to hazardous weather conditions will benefit most from this project,” says Const. Mike Zacharuk of the EPS Community Action Team.

“Warmer weather with wet snow and freezing rain renders most blankets and winter clothing useless once it becomes saturated with moisture. Hypothermia can occur in temperatures as warm as eight degrees when it’s raining and windy. The homeless who aren’t able to or choose not to dry out in a shelter face these risks,” says Const. Zacharuk.

In October 2017 the EPS connected with a Canadian company that donated 60 capes to the EPS that are made of waterproof, highly-visible material that provides shelter from the elements. The company has asked to remain anonymous.

The capes can be worn over winter clothing, rolled into a hood for a pillow, or used to cover belongings. The garment is made from fabric trimmings that would otherwise end up in a landfill site.

Distribution of the capes will be coordinated by members of the Community Action Team. Officers will coordinate with specific units of the EPS to identify and locate persons in need who would benefit most from the garment. Officers will attempt to gather feedback from the recipients to determine if the capes were of use and if the program should continue.

Thieves targeting vehicle batteries

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance identifying a truck allegedly involved in a series of reported vehicle battery thefts.

Since late December, police have received more than 40 reports of vehicle battery thefts citywide, with thieves primarily targeting batteries from trucks, trailers and heavy equipment.

During a recent theft on March 13, 2018, thieves stole multiple batteries from school buses, resulting in thousands of dollars of damage to the buses and interrupting their daily service.

“These battery thefts are occurring in quiet industrial areas across the city," says Det. Michael Dreilich with West Division. "Thieves appear to be most active in the overnight hours and on weekends when businesses are closed or very few staff are present."

An older model, white Ford F350/450 regular cab, dually truck was captured on surveillance footage at several of the theft locations; investigators believe it may be involved in the series. The truck is described as having amber running lights on the roof and a flat deck with wooden sides and lower clearance lights. The truck also has writing on the driver’s side door. A photo of the truck is included below.

To prevent the theft of batteries, investigators are advising businesses to make note of any suspicious activity and report it to police. Ensuring properties are well-lit, locking compounds after hours, installing intrusion alarms and surveillance cameras and/or hiring onsite security are a few other recommended ways to deter thieves.

Anyone who has information about these thefts or the suspect vehicle is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm
