The Edmonton Police Service invites all brave Edmontonians to join us and many other local enforcement agencies as we start the New Year off with a splash — into Lake Summerside for Special Olympics Alberta.
Every year, the Edmonton Police Service proudly participates in the Law Enforcement Torch Run’s Polar Plunge at Lake Summerside. This year, over 200 plungers have registered, including the Edmonton Police Service’s very own Deputy Chief, Brian Simpson.
“Jumping into freezing wintery water is nothing compared to the challenges many Special Olympics athletes face every day of their lives. Every plunger who endures a few moments of cold will help an Alberta Special Olympic athlete achieve their goals,” explains Constable Amanda Trenchard. “It’s a unique act to raise awareness and support for a great cause.”
This year, plungers are asked to raise $75 each to help the LETR reach their Alberta-wide fundraising goal of $250,000. You can still register for the Plunge and walk-in plungers are welcome! If you’re interested in the deep freeze dive, register here and download this Plunger Toolkit for some helpful information. If you’re not a fan of the freezing waters, you can show your support from the warmth of your home and donate to a “plunger” or the event itself.
The event is free to the public and we encourage fans, families and observers to witness the action and excitement. The Polar Plunge Edmonton will have skating, snowshoeing, marshmallow roasting and more available during the day for free or with a donation.

The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about counterfeit gold bars being sold to citizens and merchants across the city.
Police received information late last year regarding the sale of counterfeit gold bars to various merchants in Edmonton. Upon further investigation, it was quickly determined that the counterfeit gold bars were indeed fakes.
“It can be difficult to tell whether this product is real or fake upon first glance,” says Const. Robert Wellon with the Criminal Investigation Section in Northwest Division. “We tested the product for authenticity and quickly determined these gold bars were nothing more than copper bars plated in gold.”
Investigators are warning merchants and citizens to be cautious should they be approached by someone selling gold bars, which appear professionally packaged and authentic.
The counterfeit gold bars are being sold in various weight denominations and range in price. They weigh from 10 to 31 grams per piece and suspects are selling them for anywhere between $300 and $800 each.
Counterfeit gold bar (back)
Counterfeit gold bar (front)
A total of 220 grams ($10,000 market value) of counterfeit gold has been recovered by the EPS throughout this investigation.
“There have been approximately 20 sales transactions involving the counterfeit gold here in Edmonton alone,” says Wellon. “Store merchants are usually the primary target of this type of crime, but we are now starting to see this product being sold online through buy and sell websites, such as Kijiji.”
The Edmonton Police Service encourages all buyers and merchants to ask questions and request a purchase receipt from the seller.
“When something seems too good to be true - it usually is,” reminds Wellon.
Anyone who has information about the counterfeit gold bars is encouraged to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at http://ift.tt/1az8Eve.

He is described as being a Caucasian male, approximately six feet tall with a slim build. He also has a tattoo on the right side of his neck that says “Gemini”.
Brandon is described as being violent, and currently has 12 warrants outstanding for previous thefts and domestic-violence related incidents.

“It’s my distinct privilege to help kick off this milestone year for the Edmonton Police Service,” says Chief Rod Knecht. “I encourage all Edmontonians to join us in commemorating our shared history and the strong community spirit that has kept this city safe and growing for well over a century.”

The transition of the police service is seen in the colours, as well as in the uniform and diversity of the members represented. The silver maple leaf ties the anniversary of the police service to its Canadian heritage.
To also commemorate the anniversary, EPS detective and police artist Ken Bruns has created a print that meticulously illustrates the historical aspects of the police service. The print will be on display at EPS stations and available through the artist at kbdrawingboard@hotmail.com.

The Edmonton Police Service ran an impaired driving campaign over the holiday season, which included a number of Checkstop events across the city.
The EPS Checkstop program involves vehicle-stop locations and roving patrols across the city looking for impaired drivers. While it is aimed at detecting impaired drivers and removing them from the road, a large component is also aimed at educating the public of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

The Checkstop Campaign enhances other EPS impaired driving enforcement efforts such as Target All Drunk Drivers (TADD - police mobile enforcement near entertainment areas) and Curb the Danger (citizens reporting impaired drivers by calling 911), and helps to make Edmonton’s streets safer for all citizens.
Curb the Danger calls received from residents also played an important role in helping to keep motorists and pedestrians safe over the holidays and throughout 2016.
In one instance, on New Year’s Eve, police responded to a Curb the Danger call that resulted in the arrest of an impaired 19-year-old female driver. The driver had allegedly collided with a bus shelter on the south side of 132 Avenue near 105 Street, at approximately 2:30 a.m. that morning. When tested by officers, the woman provided breath sample readings of 170mg% and 180mg%.

Report the location, vehicle description, and licence plate number.
Keep the vehicle in sight but do not attempt to chase the vehicle, or break the law to do so.
