Police continue to investigate 2016 aggravated assault; witnesses still urged to contact police

The Edmonton Police Service continues to seek witnesses to a 2016 aggravated assault which left a 24-year-old man unconscious in a wooded area with serious injuries.

On Saturday, May 14, 2016, at approximately 7 a.m., a bystander walking their dog in the area of 69 Avenue and 172 Street located an unconscious male in a nearby wooded area. West Division officers, along with EMS, responded to the scene and treated and transported the man to hospital.

It was reported that the 24-year-old male complainant met an unknown male at the West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre just after midnight on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The unknown male then introduced the 24-year-old complainant to a group of four to five males and two females, between the ages of 18-20, all unknown to him. The group, including the 24-year-old complainant, then allegedly walked to the Callingwood Skatepark located at 17710-69 Avenue.

A short time after arriving at the Skatepark, investigators believe an altercation took place involving the unknown male, who introduced the 24-year-old complainant to the group. It’s believed the 24-year-old complainant allegedly attempted to stop the altercation, at which time he was assaulted. The 24-year-old complainant was then located later that morning, around 7 a.m., unconscious in a wooded area nearby.

Investigators have yet to speak with the unknown male who was also allegedly assaulted during the altercation, but encourage him to contact police.

“We remain hopeful that witnesses, as well as the other assaulted male, will come forward to assist with this investigation,” says Det. Billy Countryman with West Division’s Criminal Investigation Section. “The 24-year-old complainant will sadly have to live with the injuries sustained from this assault for the rest of his life.”

The 24-year-old complainant had been wearing a light green, full button-up shirt with beige khakis and red sneakers at the time of the assault. He was also wearing a black baseball cap, sunglasses and a blue backpack.

The unknown male who was also allegedly assaulted in the altercation, is described as being aboriginal, approximately 19 years of age, with a thin build. He was riding a black mountain bike and wearing a toque in the early morning hours of May 14, 2016.

Investigators do not have suspect descriptions at this time.

This public plea was initiated as a result of new information, recently provided to police.

The Edmonton Police Service’s Canine Unit is hosting the 2017 National Championship Canine Trials this weekend in Edmonton, to determine which Canadian team will be awarded “Top Dog.”

Each year, canine teams from across Canada come together in friendly competition to test their skills. This year’s trials will take place over the course of three days, commencing Friday, Sept. 15, 2017. While Sept. 15 and 16 are closed to the public, the trials culminate into a public day on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017 at RE/MAX Field located at 10233-96 Avenue. Opening ceremonies for the event will take place at 9 a.m., with a half-time program around noon. The event is scheduled to conclude at 4 p.m..

“Everyone is welcome to the public event taking place on Sunday,” says Const. Murray Burke, Chairman of the Trials and handler with the EPS Canine Unit. “There will be plenty of activities for children and families… and of course, lots of dogs,” says Burke.

The events taking place Sept. 15 and 16 include tracking, evidence location, detection, building and compound searches, as well as drug and explosive detection. The public day on Sept. 17, will showcase agility, obedience and criminal apprehension – skills which handlers and their dogs use each day on the job.

Forty-two different dog teams from 14 different agencies across the country will be participating in this year’s trials.

“This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the EPS Canine Unit,” says Burke. “So it would be nice to defend our Top Dog title for the third year in a row on home turf.”

A 30-year-old male suspect is dead, after allegedly fleeing the scene of an earlier hit-and-run collision. It was reported to police on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at approximately 3:45 p.m., that a suspect male driving a silver Ford Freestar minivan was travelling northbound in an alley between 97 Street and 101 Street, when it allegedly struck a blue Dodge Ram1500 travelling eastbound along 116 Avenue.

Excessive speeders ongoing issue on Groat Road

The Edmonton Police Service is reminding drivers to slow down on Groat Road after issuing more than 450 speeding violations since mid-June.

A response to police and community concerns regarding speeding and careless driving in the area, officers with the EPS West Division Traffic Team have been conducting targeted enforcement in the Groat Road area throughout the summer. Marked as a 50 km/h speed zone from River Valley Road to 104 Avenue, and a 60 km/h zone thereafter, the winding pattern of Groat Road is attractive for drivers looking to test the limits of their vehicles.

Since targeted speed enforcement began on June 15, 2017, 465 drivers have been caught travelling over the posted speed limit on Groat Road. Forty-three of these drivers were captured travelling 50 km/h or more over the posted limit and were subsequently issued a mandatory court summons.

“Unfortunately, these numbers represent only a fraction of the speeders that we see but are unable to intercept,” says Const. Bryce Healey with the West Division Traffic Team. “We have caught several drivers more than once during this enforcement period, sometimes within 24-hours.”

Last month, officers observed multiple dangerous speeding and careless driving incidents on Groat Road:

  • On Aug. 6, 2017 at approximately 9 p.m. a blue and white 2014 BMW HP4 motorcycle was observed travelling 112 km/h in the posted 60 km/h speed zone. Within the next ten minutes, the same motorcycle was captured speeding twice more at a 111 km/h and a 123 km/h and was also observed dangerously weaving in and out of traffic, nearly missing a bus.  Officers conducted a traffic stop and the 29-year-old male driver was issued three compulsory court summons and a violation for careless driving.

  • On Aug. 20, 2017 at shortly before 10 p.m. a red 2001 Honda 929 motorcycle was observed travelling 92 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone. While attempting to conduct a traffic stop, officers observed the motorcycle pass two vehicles on River Valley Road by driving into the oncoming traffic lanes and then accelerating to 166 km/h on the James McDonald Bridge. Once stopped, the 28-year-old male driver was issued a speeding violation, a careless driving violation and a mandatory court summons for speeding.

  • On Aug. 22, 2017 shortly after 8 p.m. a red 2007 Ducatti was observed repeatedly speeding and weaving in and out of traffic, reaching 98 km/h in the 50 km/h posted speed zone and 94 km/h in the 60 km/h speed zone. Once safely stopped, officers noticed that a 10-year-old child was a passenger on the motorcycle. The 44-year-old male driver was issued two speeding violations and a careless driving violation.

“Groat Road is a busy and winding road and easily becomes dangerous for motorists and pedestrians when drivers speed or drive carelessly,” says Healey. “Slowing down and adhering to the speed limit makes all roadways safer for everyone.”

The EPS encourages citizens with traffic concerns to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
