Police investigating suspicious death in west Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death that was reported today.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, around 12:30 p.m., West Division police officers responded to call of a deceased male found in a residence in the area of 101 Avenue and 153 Street.

 

Homicide Section is investigating. An autopsy has not yet been scheduled.

Police looking for missing man who was in stolen vehicle

The Edmonton Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance locating a 46-year-old male passenger who was in a vehicle when it was stolen.

Today, Feb. 28, 2017, at approximately 2:30 p.m. police responded to a call of a stolen vehicle in the area of 159 Street and 87 Avenue. It was reported that a 1977 maroon coloured Chevy Silverado with an AB licence plate BVS 8679 was left running with a passenger inside. The passenger is a 46-year-old male who functions at the level of a 7-year-old child.

 

RCMP recovered the stolen vehicle in Stony Plain around 4:45 p.m., however, the passenger is still missing.

The passenger, Cameron Lone, 46, is described as 6’0” tall with a slim build. He has brown hair and is wearing an Edmonton Oilers hat, an Oilers jersey (as pictured), blue jeans and grey shoes.  He may also be wearing a grey jacket.

The suspect is described as an Aboriginal male in his 20s, 5’5” tall with an average build. He was seen wearing a grey jacket, a ball cap and has tattoos on his hands.

Police seek public’s assistance in identifying suspects in connection with city-wide B&E Series

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance to locate several suspects believed to be responsible for a recent break-and-enter blitz targeting various box stores across the city.

Several suspects working together are alleged to be responsible for 10 break and enters to businesses across the city during the early morning hours, between Feb. 19 and Feb. 26, 2017. Six of the incidents occurred at southeast Edmonton businesses.

The suspects have typically gained entry to the businesses, which include outdoor recreation and electronic stores near the loading bay areas.

The thieves have stolen everything from watches, GPS units, to action cameras, snowboards, laptops and computers.

Police seek public’s assistance to locate violent offender

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a violent offender that failed to return to Alberta Hospital Friday evening.

Dean Goulet, 39, left the hospital Friday afternoon, but did not return to the hospital by a 10 p.m. curfew, as stipulated under his court-ordered conditions.

Goulet is a prolific violent offender who has served prison time for numerous robbery and firearm-related crimes.

Goulet has been placed on court ordered conditions including:

• Must abide by a curfew of 10 PM to 6 AM daily
• Must abstain from the possession or consumption of alcohol or drugs, including marijuana
• Must not be in any premise or establishment where the primary focus is the consumption or sale of alcohol (bars, nightclubs, casinos etc.)
• Must not associate with anyone with a criminal history
 
Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of Dean Goulet is advised to not approach this individual, but is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567.

Autopsy results confirm woman died from gunshot wounds

An autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiner Wednesday has confirmed that a 39-year-old Edmonton woman died from gunshot wounds.

Cynthia Deborah Kennedy, 39, of Edmonton, was discovered in a vehicle parked on a rural property near 258 Avenue and Meridian Street on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017.

 

This is Edmonton’s eighth homicide of 2017.

Police investigate suspicious apartment building fire in west Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service Arson Unit is investigating a suspicious apartment building fire that occurred in west Edmonton last week.

On Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017 at approximately 8 a.m. police were called to a fire in the area of 172 Street and 76 Avenue. Working alongside Edmonton Fire Rescue, EPS investigators have deemed the fire suspicious, though the exact cause remains undetermined at this time.

 

EPS Arson Unit continues to investigate.

Homicide investigators charge 38-year-old man with manslaughter

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 38-year-old man with manslaughter in connection with the recent death of an Edmonton man.

Downtown Division patrol members were dispatched to an address near 85 Street and Jasper Avenue on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, after receiving a 911 call.

Upon arrival, officers located a 50-year-old male in medical distress in the residence, the result of an alleged physical altercation with the accused. Paramedics treated and transported the male complainant to hospital with critical injuries.

Investigators initially charged Terrance Logan Farnham, 38, with aggravated assault, but have since upgraded the charge to manslaughter, after the 50-year-old male succumbed to his injuries in hospital two days later on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017.

The deceased and accused were known to one another.

An autopsy was conducted on the deceased male earlier this week by the Medical Examiner, which is awaiting toxicology results before confirming cause and manner of death.

Homicide Section will not be releasing the names of the deceased.
Every investigation is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the names of the deceased in this particular investigation, as the EPS has a duty to protect the privacy rights of the victims and their families as outlined under FOIP legislation.

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death in connection with a body discovered in northeast Edmonton on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., Monday afternoon, Northeast patrol members were called to a rural property near 258 Avenue and Meridian Street, after receiving a 911 call.

Upon arrival, patrol members discovered the body of a deceased female, believed to be in her late 30s, inside a vehicle.

Homicide detectives have since taken over the investigation. The Medical Examiner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday afternoon.

2,442 violations issued during “Big Ticket Event”

Edmonton Police Service officers and City of Edmonton automated enforcement handed out 2,442 traffic violations this week during Operation 24 Hours.

During the 24-hour enforcement period from Wednesday, Feb. 15, to Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, there were 1,886 speeding tickets issued. There were also 546 violations for seatbelt infractions, distracted driving, red light violations, and other Traffic Safety Act violations. There were 10 Criminal Code offences.

 

Excessive speeding is targeted during Operation 24 Hours. Police found two vehicles that appeared to be racing near the James MacDonald Bridge. The vehicles were travelling 146 km/h and 130 km/h in a 60km/h zone.

 

Police issued 91 distracted driving violations. One incident involved a driver who was issued a ticket for having a live ferret around their neck while driving along Whyte Avenue.

 

STAT members conducted a vehicle stop and arrested a female who had 30 outstanding warrants. While conducting another vehicle stop, officers found that the vehicle and licence plate were both reported stolen. The drivers in both incidents were arrested.

 

The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year (such as Operation 24 Hours) to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.

Police asking public to help identify suspect

Southeast Division detectives are asking the public for assistance in identifying a suspect.

On Monday, Dec. 26, 2016 police were called to a disturbance around 10 p.m. at an entertainment establishment in South Edmonton Common. It was reported that a male was allegedly assaulted with a weapon by another male. EMS treated and transported the male to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, who left the establishment prior to police arrival, is described as a Caucasian male, about 6’1” tall and weighs about 150 lbs. He is slim, has an oval face, trimmed beard, dark eyes and dark hair. He was wearing a light grey suit, a collared shirt (without a tie).

Police are releasing these surveillance images of the suspect and are asking anyone who may be able to identify him, to come forward to police.

Police investigating traffic fatality

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a traffic fatality that occurred tonight, Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017.

The initial investigation indicates that a collision occurred between a vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 10 p.m. in the area of 55 Street and 146 Avenue.

 

EMS responded, treated and transported the 86-year-old female pedestrian to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

VICE on patrol

Members of the Edmonton Police Service VICE Unit and Northeast Division conducted proactive enforcement to effectively disrupt exploitive activities associated to street-level consumers (“johns”) of the sex trade.

On Thursday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, police focused their two-day enforcement on persons purchasing sexual acts from sex workers contrary to the Criminal Code.

 

Over the two-day operation:

  • 26 males were arrested and charged with obtaining of sexual services for consideration.
  • Offenders arrested ranged in age from 19 to 60.
  • Professions of accused included a university student, trade workers, professionals and unemployed.
  • Police also laid charges for: trafficking (x2) and a 24-hour suspension under the Traffic Safety Act.   

“VICE Unit takes this exploitative behaviour seriously,” says Staff Sgt. Dale Johnson with EPS VICE Unit. “The police work hard to deter “johns” from our neighbourhoods and to keep our communities safe.”

Police searching for suspect in connection with armed robbery and carjacking

The Edmonton Police Service is looking for the public’s assistance in locating a 2013 black Ford 150 Truck with the licence plate #BKP 8292, which was stolen during a carjacking earlier this morning.

Southeast Division members responded to a medical clinic parking lot near 10 Avenue and 91 Street at approximately 10:30 a.m. today, Monday, Feb. 13, 2016.

It was reported to police that a Caucasian male suspect stole the truck, after approaching and threatening the female owner of the vehicle.

Investigators believe the same suspect was also responsible for an armed robbery at gunpoint that occurred earlier this morning, at a hotel located near 101 Street and Ellerslie Road.

The male suspect is armed and dangerous, and as such, the public are advised to not engage the suspect should they come into contact with him.

Police lay charge in first traffic fatality of 2017

The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section has charged a 47-year-old male driver in relation to a fatal collision late last month.

On Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, police responded to a two vehicle collision just after 3:10 p.m. in the area of 144 Avenue and Ebbers Boulevard.  It was reported that a 2003 Toyota Corolla was travelling southbound on Ebbers Boulevard and attempting to turn eastbound onto 144 Avenue at a stop sign, when it was struck by a 2016 Ford F150 that had been travelling 111 km/h westbound in a 60 km zone.

 

EMS responded, treated and transported the 43-year-old male driver of the Toyota Corolla to hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

 

Gary Stokes, the 47-year-old male driver of the Ford F-150, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

 

Stokes is charged with speeding under the Traffic Safety Act and is expected to appear in court on March 16, 2017.

 

Police do not believe that alcohol or drugs were factors in this collision.

 

This was Edmonton’s first traffic fatality of 2017.

Public information and warning: Sexual offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is issuing the following warning; Bruce Windsor, 55, is a convicted sexual offender and the EPS has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another sexual offence against someone under the age of 16 while in the community.

Windsor will be residing in the Edmonton area. The EPS is seeking a recognizance order on Windsor, who is being closely monitored by the EPS Behavioural Assessment Unit.

 

Windsor has been placed on a series of court ordered conditions including:

 

  • Must abide by a curfew of 10 PM to 6 AM daily

  • Must not acquire, possess or access pornography or sexually explicit material in any form or on any type of media.

  • Must not own, use or possess a computer, or any technological device that would allow unsupervised access to the internet.

  • Must not be within 100 meters around places where children under the age of 16 are likely to congregate, i.e. elementary schools, daycare centers, parks, swimming pools, recreational centers.

  • Must not be in the presence of any children under the age 18 unless accompanied by an approved adult aware of his criminal history.

Homicide detectives release photo of vehicle of interest

EPS Homicide detectives are asking the public to help identify a vehicle of interest in relation to a homicide that occurred in January.

 

The vehicle is described as a light coloured Dodge truck. Investigators believe there were a number of items in the truck bed.

Background

 

On Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, police responded to a weapons complaint just after 6:45 a.m. in the area of 110 Avenue and 84 Street. Several residents reported hearing gunshots.

 

Upon arrival, police found an injured 28-year-old male. EMS responded, treated and transported the male to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

                         

Ian Janvier, 28, died as a result of gunshot wounds. Homicide detectives have deemed the manner of death to be a homicide.

 

This is Edmonton’s fifth homicide in 2017.

EPS Homicide Section lays manslaughter charge following in-custody fentanyl death

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Homicide Section has laid charges in relation to an in-custody death that occurred in 2016.

On May 19, 2016 at approximately 12:36 a.m., Darcy Whitehead, 47, was lodged in a holding cell within the Detainee Management Unit at EPS Headquarters in relation to a theft and breach of conditions.

 

Just before 2 a.m. another inmate, Daryl Saunter, 40, was placed into the same holding cell as Whitehead. Saunter then allegedly retrieved a small quantity of concealed drugs and provided a portion to Whitehead. Both men then allegedly consumed the drugs together.

 

Shortly thereafter, Whitehead went into medical distress and was treated and transported to hospital by EMS, where he died several hours later.

 

An autopsy was conducted later that day and the Edmonton Medical Examiner determined Whitehead died as a result of alcohol and fentanyl toxicity.

 

Saunter has been charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and trafficking a controlled substance in relation to this incident.

Police investigate serious injury collision at 50 Street and Manning Drive

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a serious injury collision that occurred yesterday morning, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2016 at the intersection of 50 Street and Manning Drive.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., Northeast Division officers responded to a two vehicle collision. Witnesses reported that a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero was travelling westbound on 50 Street and proceeded through a red light when it was struck by a 1999 Ford F150 travelling northbound on Manning Drive.

 

EMS responded, treated and transported the 86-year-old female driver of the Oldsmobile Alero to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The female remains in hospital in stable condition.

 

The 55-year-old male driver of the Ford F-150 was not injured.

 

Police do not believe that alcohol, drugs or excessive speed are factors in this collision.

Police charge suspect in relation to water park sexual assaults

The Edmonton Police Service Zebra Child Protection Section has charged a 39-year-old male in connection with multiple sexual assaults that occurred over the weekend at a west-end water park.

West Division patrol officers responded to the West Edmonton Mall World Waterpark at approximately 10:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, after receiving sexual assault allegations.

It was reported to police the accused inappropriately touched multiple teenaged girls, while they were swimming at the waterpark. Upon arrival, patrol members were led to the accused male by WEM security officials, at which time he was arrested and taken into custody.

Child Protection Section has since taken over the investigation.

Soleiman Hajj Soleiman, 39, has been charged with sexual assault (x6) and sexual interference (x6).

Assist to locate: High risk offender wanted on warrants

The Edmonton Police Service has issued arrest warrants for Torrie Evan Nepoose, 25, who allegedly breached conditions while released on bail.

Nepoose is arrestable for breach of recognizance and poses great risk of extreme violence to the public.

Three men arrested in relation to 11 B&Es

The Edmonton Police Service has arrested three men in relation to 11 break and enters that occurred in Southeast and Southwest Divisions.

From Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 to Wednesday Feb. 1, 2017, 17 daytime break and enters were reported to police.

 

Throughout the investigation, police obtained evidence from home video surveillance cameras with included images of a suspicious vehicle. The evidence led police to execute a search warrant at a residence, which culminated in the arrest three suspects. Numerous items were found at the residence, which connected the three suspects to at least 11 break and enters.

 

Three males were charged on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017.

 

Sheldon Steven Nicolas, 24, was charged with housebreaking and commit theft (x11), flight from peace officer, breach of recognizance (x2).

 

Keanu Christopher, Nicolas, 25, was charged with housebreaking and commit theft (x11).

 

Robert Henry Roy, 18, was charged with housebreaking and commit theft (x11).

 

The investigation continues. Additional charges may be pending.

Man charged with second-degree murder in death of 66-year-old male

Homicide detectives have arrested and charged a 59-year-old man with second-degree murder in the death of an Edmonton man over the weekend.

Carl Perteet, 59, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the death of Donald Alfred Carruthers, 66, Sunday, Feb. 5, 2016. It was reported to investigators that a violent altercation occurred between Pereet and Carruthers, the latter of whom was a visitor to the 151 Street residence where he died early Sunday morning.  

Autopsy results undertaken by the Medical Examiner’s Office Monday afternoon, confirm that Carruthers died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries.

Perteet is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 9 a.m.

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death that occurred overnight in west Edmonton.

West Division patrol officers initially responded to a suite in an apartment building near 101 Avenue and 151 Street, at approximately 4:50 a.m. this morning, Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017.

 

Upon arrival, officers found a male, believed to be in his 60s, deceased inside the suite.

 

Homicide detectives have been called out and have since taken over the investigation.

 

An autopsy has yet to be scheduled. No other details are available at this time.

Police investigate car-jacking in southeast Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a report of a car-jacking that occurred last week.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017 Southeast Division officers responded to a theft of vehicle call around 5:30 p.m. in the area of 63 Street and 90 Avenue.

It was reported that a female was walking towards her vehicle at a grocery store parking lot when a male allegedly produced a weapon and demanded the keys to her vehicle.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned male with dark eyebrows, 5’6” to 5’8” tall with a medium build. He was wearing a dark coloured hoodie.

The suspect fled in her 2005 Subaru Forester (SUV) with the Alberta licence plate CEF 033.

Syringe-wielding suspect arrested in robbery series

An Edmonton man has been arrested in connection with a series of robberies, where he is alleged to have threatened complainants with a blood-filled syringe and a knife.

Police began investigating following a pair of incidents back on Dec. 27, 2016. It was reported to police that a lone male allegedly threatened a clerk with a knife at a gas station near 61 Street and 90 Avenue, before making off with cash and gas certificates.



Later that evening, it was reported the same male suspect produced a blood-filled syringe and threatened to stab a taxi cab driver and demanded cash, after being picked up near a fast food restaurant at 50 Street and 101 Avenue.



On Dec. 28, 2016, evidence led investigators to the same male suspectho allegedly produced a syringe and demanded cash from a clerk at a convenience store near 15 Avenue and Lakewood Road West.

                                                                                  

The series of robberies continued on Dec. 29, 2016, when a suspect matching the same description allegedly threatened another taxi cab driver with a syringe, before making off with an undisclosed amount of cash, near 132 Avenue and Fort Road.



Investigators have also charged the male suspect for a “gas and dash” incident at a station near 34 Street and 43 Avenue on Jan. 4, 2017.



On Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, EPS Robbery detectives arrested Trevor Sibbons, 33, of Edmonton, in connection with the series. Sibbons is charged with robbery (x4), possession of a weapon (x4), possession under $5,000 and theft under $5,000.
