JEREMY CHRISTENSEN

On September 14, 2014 a woman was walking her dog in central Edmonton when four large dogs broke out of their yard and charged toward them, the largest of the dogs weighed over 150 pounds.  The woman grabbed her dog, attempted to run away, but was forced to the ground by the vicious animals. She pulled her dog under her as two of the dogs began biting on her legs while the other two dug at her back in an effort to get at her pet.  Jeremy Christensen heard her loud screams and the horrible sounds of the dogs. He ran out of his house and as he approached the chaotic scene he realized there were four dogs attacking her. Fearing that he might be mauled if he tried to grab them, he began waving his arms and yelling to try to scare them away. However, they turned their attention on him. Jeremy immediately turned and ran towards his car parked in the alley, scrambling onto its roof to avoid the vicious animals. They circled his car jumping at him, then turned their attention back to the helpless woman and her dog who were still lying in the alley two houses away. Realizing the dogs would continue their attack Jeremy got into his car and drove up beside the woman.  He threw open his passenger door, encouraging her to get in quickly.  She managed to crawl into the car with her pet, then Jeremy drove to his house where an ambulance and police were called. Jeremy attended to the victim’s injuries until they arrived and she was transported to hospital. The woman required surgery to close her wounds and was in hospital for two weeks.  Her dog required extensive surgery but is expected to make a full recovery.

For his brave efforts to save a woman being mauled by four vicious dogs the Bronze Medal for Bravery is awarded to Jeremy Christensen.

More details on each of the 15 incidents will be available at the ceremony.

Honourary Testimonial: Is awarded to those who show presence of mind during the rescue; however the attempt has minimal danger to the rescuer.

Bronze Medal: Is awarded to those involved in a noteworthy rescue.  There is usually a fair amount of risk or danger associated with the rescue.

Comprehensive investigation leads to 143 charges in B&E spree

Multiple police resources from three divisions brought a crime spree that impacted residents across the city to an abrupt conclusion Monday with the arrest of four individuals.

Through an extensive and coordinated review of multiple incidents that occurred over a two-week period in early October in southwest, northwest and northeast divisions, EPS has linked some or all of 18 break and enter and vehicle theft-related investigations to four associated individuals.

Investigators have arrested and charged these individuals – two male adults and two youths - who are now facing a total of 143 charges.

Investigators believe the four accused were involved in breaking into vehicles in residential neighbourhoods across the city. Once inside the vehicle, the accused would locate a remote garage door opener left in the vehicle to access the contents of garages and homes. In some of the incidents, the accused would allegedly steal a secondary vehicle found at the residence, using keys found in the home to further continue their cycle of break and enters across the city.

“In some of these instances, the complainants also left the connecting pedestrian door from the garage to the residence unlocked, providing ample opportunity for the suspects to access to their homes and their valuables, while they slept,” said Acting Det. Trevor McKendrick, of EPS Northwest Division.

“It’s important that we all take steps to do the little things to protect ourselves from those who will take advantage of an easy opportunity like this.”

Kristopher Prasad, 19, is facing 63 charges related to break and enter, theft from vehicle, theft of vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of an offensive weapon, assault with a weapon and numerous breach conditions.

Benjamin Pittman, 18, is facing 48 charges related to break and enter, theft from vehicle, theft of vehicle and possession of stolen property.

The first youth is facing a total of 24 charges relating to break and enter, theft, possession of stolen property and possession of a weapon.  The second youth is facing eight charges related to break and enter, theft and numerous breaches.

Neither individual can be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

EPS deals with 10,000 more calls for service

The Edmonton Police Service is marking a milestone of sorts, as dispatched calls for service have increased by more than 10,000 compared to the same time last year. These calls have been answered and evaluated, and a police officer has been sent to a location to investigate.

This is a significant increase in dispatched calls for service – calls related to serious incidents and violent crimes.  The Edmonton Police Service has dispatched 134,526 calls for service year-to-date (October 22, 2015) compared to 124,204 calls dispatched last year (October 22, 2014), which is an increase of 8.3 per cent.

“We understand the public’s frustration when they have to wait for police response to non-emergency crimes,” says Insp. Graham Hogg with 911 Police Communications Branch. “We appreciate these citizens may have been impacted by crime. The EPS is doing its best to respond to all calls for service within the finite resources we have. This significant increase provides some insight into the challenges officers respond to on a daily basis. ”

The Edmonton Police Service is using a variety of tactics to help mitigate the situation:

  • Complainants for non-emergency calls are contacted or called back with an update of the status of their call.
  • All calls are continuously monitored, evaluated and dispatched appropriately.
  • Introduced Northwest Division and geographic boundaries were realigned to evenly distribute call volumes.
  • Report a Crime Online implemented
  • Preparing for the Collision Reporting Centre at Gateway Park

Two of the most common crimes reported to the EPS are theft from vehicle and theft of vehicle.

The EPS encourages citizens to take proactive crime prevention measures:

  • Do not leave your vehicle running.
  • Do not leave a spare key hidden in the vehicle.
  • Lock your vehicle.
  • Use a steering wheel locking device (e.g. The Club).
  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle.
  • Install a car alarm.

The Edmonton Police Service encourages the public to call 911 when witnessing a crime or suspicious activity, or if there is a need for emergency services.

“Every tip a citizen reports to the police is helpful,” says Insp. Hogg. “Many times, it’s the public that proactively reports a crime, and this can help prevent further crime.”

Citizens can also lodge non-emergency complaints by calling 780-423-4567 or #377 from their mobile phone.  Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at http://ift.tt/1az8Eve.

It is reported an adult male was making door-to-door deliveries in the area of Henry Avenue this morning. The man left his mid-size car running as he went to make a delivery and the vehicle was approached by a silver Jeep Wranger carrying four males.

A youth male allegedly exited the Jeep and entered the mid-size car. Police believe the youth was attempting to steal the vehicle.

The adult male returned to the vehicle and a short physical altercation occurred with the youth male. It is reported the Jeep Wrangler then attempted to flee the scene, striking the adult male, the youth male and the mid-size car in the process.

Both males sustained non-life threatening injuries and were treated and transported to hospital.

Police are searching for the stolen 2013 silver Jeep Wrangler involved in the hit and run collision. The vehicle has black rims and will likely be damaged on the front, back and passenger side. The vehicle is pictured below.

EPS serves up summons to local pizza shop

A local food establishment in the area of 97 Street and 118 Avenue was the center of an investigation late last month.

Northwest Community Beats officers received information about an unlicensed establishment allegedly selling alcohol after-hours.

Investigators believed the alcohol was being sold inside the establishment, as well as on delivery – under the semblance of a pizza delivery service.

Police obtained a search warrant and a substantial amount of alcohol was found at the establishment inside pizza boxes, in pre-packaged brown paper bags and inside delivery vehicles.

EPS displays recovered alcohol

A total of 240 cans of beer (355 ml) and 100 bottles of various spirits (375 ml) were located on the premises.

“While the majority of 118 Avenue businesses work hard to contribute to the wellness of the surrounding community, this business compromised the safety and well-being of 118 Avenue through the unregulated and illegal sale of alcohol,” said Northwest Division Community Beats Sergeant Curtis Hoople.

On Sept. 27, 2015 investigators issued a Provincial Violation Summons under Section 81 of the Gaming and Liquor Act: Prohibited Sale of Liquor to four employees of the establishment. The establishment was shut down for one day.

“This investigation is a demonstration of Northwest Division’s ongoing commitment to Alberta Avenue and its surrounding communities. The results of this investigation are expected to have a positive and immediate impact on the area,” Hoople said.

Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at http://ift.tt/1az8Eve.

#nogoodway to use the R-word

There are not many words in the English language as offensive as ‘retard,’ when used in the context of labeling people with intellectual disabilities.

According to the Canadian Association for Community Living, 899,000 people in Canada have an intellectual disability; that’s just over 2.5 per cent of the population. Odds are, each one of us is related to, or knows someone, with an intellectual disability. Although most people don’t mean any harm when they use the R-word, it is bullying—plain and simple.

The Edmonton Police Service is joining the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Special Olympics Canada and Motionball to eliminate the use of the R-word in everyday conversation. YELLOWCARD Day, held annually on October 8th, brings attention to the cause through social media using #nogoodway. This year, Edmonton Police Service is taking part in the campaign to show support for Special Olympics and for all persons with intellectual disabilities.

You can show your support by dropping by City Hall on October 8th at 10:00 a.m. and joining others in taking the pledge to stop using the R-word. The first 50 people arriving at the event will get a free Yellowcard t-shirt. If you can’t make it to the event, please visit http://ift.tt/1oAngP8 and take the pledge online. Be YELLOWCARD ambassadors—because there is #nogoodway to use the R-word!

Members of the media are invited to attend the event where October 8th will be proclaimed Yellow Card Day in Edmonton. Following the proclamation, guest speakers will take the pledge and in unison, all attendees will symbolically rip the R-word from their vocabulary.

BACKGROUND ON YELLOWCARD DAY:

  • On October 1, 2014, Motionball launched their national anti-bullying initiative, the YELLOWCARD campaign, with the goal of eliminating the casual use of the R-word (retard) in everyday conversation amongst young professionals in Canada.
  • Motionball: "We want to let people know that even when it’s used in a way that seems harmless, benign or even positive, the truth is there is #nogoodway to use the R-Word."
  • The campaign is named ‘Yellowcard’ because a yellow card in soccer is meant as a warning to let offending players know that they have crossed a line.
  • To date, over 11,000 people have taken the online pledge.
  • This year, Motionball, Special Olympics Canada, and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police are asking Canadians to spread the word and encourage their friends, family and co-workers to eliminate the R-word from their vocabulary and take the pledge.
  • Edmonton Police Service’s Yellowcard campaign will use social media (#nogoodway) to encourage citizens to wear yellow on October 8th, take a photo, take the pledge and Tweet it to their friends.
