Pedestrian deceased, suspect charged following hit and run collision

A 73-year-old man has died after he was struck by a vehicle in a hit and run collision that occurred yesterday afternoon in southeast Edmonton.

Edmonton Police Service officers responded to Mill Woods Road South and 48 Street at approximately 4:05 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2016. It is reported a male pedestrian was crossing Mill Woods Road northbound in a crosswalk when he was struck by a black Jeep Wrangler travelling eastbound on Mill Woods Road.

Emergency Medical Services responded to the collision and the pedestrian was declared deceased.

The vehicle failed to remain at the scene of the collision. The Jeep was located in the area of 36 Street and 12A Avenue shortly thereafter, and the 38-year-old male driver of the vehicle was taken into custody without incident.

The alleged driver of the Jeep, Erick Garcia, is facing four charges: dangerous driving causing death, impaired operation causing death, exceed 80 mg % causing death and criminal hit and run causing death.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the ongoing investigation.
