Police arrest suspect in stolen vehicle with baby on board

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a theft of auto incident involving a baby left in a child safety seat that occurred yesterday evening in southeast Edmonton.

On Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2015 at approximately 5:45 p.m. police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle that was allegedly left running with the keys in the ignition and was occupied by an eight-month-old female infant in a parking lot in the area of 82 Avenue and 89 Street. A last known direction of travel of the suspect and vehicle was broadcast to all police officers and was quickly located by a Canine Unit member.

The suspect vehicle was located at a fast food restaurant in the area of 87 Avenue and 109 Street. Officers conducted a traffic stop, located the unharmed infant who was still in the car seat, and apprehended the suspect without incident.

James Bachnick, 23, was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000, criminal flight, possession stolen property, and breach of conditions (x2).

The Child at Risk Response Team is still investigating the file. No charges have yet been laid against the parent.

Police seek additional witnesses to shooting

The EPS is releasing additional information today in relation to an incident that took place on Sunday morning to compel additional witnesses to step forward.

On Monday Dec. 28, 2015, Edmonton Police detectives provided additional information from their ongoing investigation into a shooting that took place at a residence in the area of Graham Wynd and 199 Street just before 5:00 a.m. on Dec. 27, 2015.

“We believe the shot was fired from 199 Street toward the home,” says Acting Detective Dylan Witwer. “There were other people sleeping in the home at the time, including a child. At this point it is early in our investigation and we are exploring all leads, however, the shooting appears to be a very serious random act of violence.”

A 49-year-old female was sleeping in the home when she was shot. The complainant’s condition is described as stable but critical.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area of 199 Street and 62 Avenue, including vehicle descriptions, between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015 are asked to contact police.

ASIRT investigating EPS officer involved shooting

At approximately 4:00 a.m. this morning (Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015) West Division officers responded to call in the area of 85 Avenue and 149 Street.

When officers arrived on scene, they were approached by a man with a weapon. A confrontation with the members occurred and the man was shot.

EMS treated and transported the man to hospital where he remains with serious injuries. No EPS members were injured during the incident.

The EPS will not be providing further comment as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken the lead in this investigation.

Suspicious death in northeast confirmed as homicide; autopsy complete and charges laid

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a woman in the most recent suspicious death that occurred in the city’s northeast earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015 at 6:55 p.m., police received a call for assistance at an apartment building in the area of 145 Avenue and 77 Street. When Northeast Division officers arrived, they found a male, Pragalthan Narainsamy Naidoo, 73, deceased on scene. One person was taken into custody following the incident.

The individual taken into custody, Celina Jennifer Kelly, 51, has since been charged with 2^nd degree murder and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offense.

An autopsy was completed yesterday (Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015). The cause of death will not be released at this time.

The court date for the accused is scheduled for January 5, 2016 at 9:00 a.m.

This is Edmonton’s 30^th homicide of 2015.

Homicide Section investigating suspicious death in city’s northeast

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death that occurred yesterday evening.

On Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015 at 6:55 p.m. police received a call for assistance at an apartment building in the area of 145 Avenue and 77 Street.

When Northeast Division officers arrived, they found a male deceased on scene. Police have taken one person into custody for questioning.

An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon (Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015).

7th Annual McCauley Cup

Edmonton Police Service officers will be lacing up their skates for a friendly game of hockey at the McCauley ice rink this afternoon, Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015 at 1 p.m.

The game marks the 7^th annual McCauley Cup. The hockey game was originally introduced by a Downtown Beat police officer who wanted to bridge the gap between the EPS and the community. Since, the game has grown in popularity and no matter the weather, youth from the neighbourhood are always ready to showcase their new skills to the police officers and spectators.

“The positive relationships between the youth and police officers that are built during events like this are invaluable,” says Const. Terrance Jakubowski, with Downtown Division and organizer of the McCauley Cup. “Today’s game is extra special as it marks the official launch of the new and improved McCauley community rink.”

The puck drops at 1 p.m. at the McCauley outdoor skating rink, located at 96 Street and 108 Avenue. All media are invited to the game for photo/video opportunities.

Players and visitors will be able to enjoy a bonfire. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided.

All spectators are encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation to the Edmonton Food Bank.

Assault rifle located in stolen vehicle; male previously banned from firearms charged

A 28-year-old man has been charged by the Edmonton Police Service after officers pulled over a stolen vehicle and located a loaded assault rifle in the car.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015, Downtown Division patrol members located a Honda Civic, previously reported as stolen, driving in the area of 101 Street and 103A Avenue. Officers followed the vehicle to 107 Street and 106 Avenue and conducted a traffic stop.

Three individuals, a male and two females, exited the vehicle. Upon searching the Civic, police members located a loaded assault rifle and 40 rounds of ammunition.

Bobby Bugle, 28, is charged with possession of offensive weapon dangerous to the public, possession of firearm knowing possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a vehicle, possession of prohibited firearm, careless use of firearm/weapon/ammunition (x2), unauthorized possession of prohibited device or ammunition, breach of recognizance and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

The accused is currently banned from possessing firearms or ammunition on five separate Firearm Prohibition Orders.

“Police apply for Firearms Prohibition Orders to help maintain public safety. We continue to see these orders ignored and it is a serious concern,” says Deputy Chief Tony Harder. “Two suspects in the recent Mac’s shootings were banned by the courts from carrying weapons.  We are working with the Crown Prosecutor’s Office to explore alternate ways of keeping guns away from accused criminals.”

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015. The two females were not charged.

Police request public’s assistance to locate missing Edmonton man

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the media’s and public’s help in locating a 40-year-old Edmonton man.

Levi Aquptanguak was last seen around 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015 after leaving his residence in the area of 101 Street and 130 Avenue. Levi functions at a mental capacity of a 13 year old and there are concerns for his well-being, as he suffers from a health condition, and also has no access to money or transportation.

 

He is described as 5’9”, approximately 160 lbs. with short black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a brown winter coat, blue pants and black shoes.

 

Levi sometimes goes to the Tim Horton’s or convenience stores near his residence.

Detectives continue to investigate armed robberies that left two men dead

The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate two armed robberies that occurred early this morning in the city’s southside, in which two Macs employees were shot dead.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. today (Friday, Dec. 18 2015), an emergency alarm was sounded from the Macs store at 32 Avenue and 82 Street. When officers arrived, they found the injured clerk and began CPR while EMS was enroute. 

Paramedics treated Karanpal Singh Bhangu, 35, and rushed him to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. 

Approximately 15 minutes after the alarm, a 911 call was received from a Macs store at 108 Street and 61 Avenue. A citizen called 911 after finding the store clerk injured and bleeding on the floor. The 41-year-old man, whose name will not be released until family are notified, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Information about the suspects in the robberies was immediately fanned out to all patrol officers on the street to be on the lookout. Officers were also directed to check on other Macs stores if possible.

Southwest Division patrol officers, who were in the Callingwood area, spotted a suspicious vehicle and noticed occupants matched the suspect descriptions. The officers approached the vehicle, which then initiated a criminal flight. The suspect vehicle collided into a barrier on the Whitemud freeway heading eastbound, under the Terwillegar overpass, and the suspects were arrested without incident. The vehicle was seized for forensic examination.

Charges are pending against the three suspects who are all known to police.

A 24-year-old male, a 26-year-old male and a 13-year-old male remain in police custody.

CAT Deployment focuses on northwest community of Calder

The Edmonton Police Service Community Action Team (CAT) and Northwest Division officers have been focusing their efforts on the prevention, intervention and suppression of crime in the northwest community of Calder, during a four-day blitz this week.

The Calder community will see an increased police presence in the area through Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015 as the EPS Specialized Traffic Apprehension Teams (STAT) increase traffic enforcement along roadways, while additional officers patrol hot spot locations for suspicious activity. Officers will also be educating residents and visitors on crime prevention throughout their patrol duties.

“Members have actively been patrolling and educating the public on issues such as leaving their vehicles running, leaving their garages unlocked and ensuring their valuables are secured and out of sight,” says Acting Staff Sgt. Curtis Hoople.

“It is surprising how many members of the public don’t realize they are a target for property theft (for example), so we are making a point of educating those individuals on the precautions they can take to avoid making themselves a target,” says Hoople.

Officers will also be on the lookout for prolific offenders, executing criminal warrants and checking that individuals are complying with their court-imposed release or curfew conditions. Over the last two days, members have executed 58 criminal warrants, conducted 80 vehicle stops and seized 11 vehicles. In addition, members have laid approximately 45 new criminal charges, which include stolen property offences, breaches, theft of vehicles and drug possession charges.

“Working collaboratively with the community and our partners will ultimately help us achieve the collective goal of keeping the community safe,” says Hoople. “We invite the public to come and meet with our officers face-to-face to address any concerns or questions they may have pertaining to crime in the area.”

Boxing coach charged with sexual assault

A boxing coach has been charged with sexual assault in connection to an alleged incident involving an athlete.

In October 2015, it was reported to police that a boxing coach had made sexual advances toward an athlete at a boxing club in Edmonton. This incident allegedly occurred in September 2015.

The suspect was arrested without incident on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015.

Leo Guilford Marsh, 63, is charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 13, 2016.

Police seek additional witnesses in relation to July homicide

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking additional witnesses in relation to the homicide of Kathleen Emma Morton, which occurred in southwest Edmonton earlier this year.

On Sunday, July 12, 2015 police responded to a report of shots fired at approximately 5:30 a.m. in the area of 49 Avenue and 111A Street. Upon arrival, police and EMS found a 27-year-old woman who had sustained gunshot wounds. She was treated at the scene and transported to hospital by EMS where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Further investigation has led detectives to believe a bright yellow Pontiac Sunfire or Chevrolet Cavalier was involved in this incident and police are seeking witnesses for information. 

Kathleen Emma Morton, 27, was Edmonton’s 12^th homicide of the year.

Youth arrested in connection with personal robbery series that targeted older women

The Edmonton Police Service has made an arrest in connection with a personal robbery series targeting older women using public transit.

Southwest Division detectives arrested and charged a young offender in relation to a November robbery series in south Edmonton, which saw four women assaulted and robbed of their purses, cell phones and other personal property.

The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of break and enter and five breach of conditions.  Property from the robberies was recovered and will be returned to its owners.

In all four incidents, the complainants were either waiting for public transit or just departing public transit in southeast or southwest Edmonton.

Graffiti tagger hit with mischief over $5,000 charge

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 29-year-old female in connection to a string of graffiti vandalisms to statues along Jasper Avenue.

Police believe a female suspect tagged various statues in the area of 112 Street and Jasper Avenue with spray paint and marker approximately 20 times over the past year. Investigation by officers from the Downtown Division Neighbourhood Empowerment Team connected a woman to the vandalisms after it was reported a horse statue was tagged on Nov. 11, 2015.

Camille Martineau, 29, was arrested without incident on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015. She faces one charge of mischief over $5,000.  

“Graffiti continues to be a prominent crime in downtown Edmonton. Vandalism defaces the downtown core, gives the impression that a neighbourhood may be unsafe, and causes unnecessary expense for property owners,” says Const. Ryan May with Downtown Division.

 “If you discover graffiti vandalism on your property, take photographs and record details about the tag, report the incident to police and remove the graffiti as soon as possible,” adds Const. May.

Woman’s death confirmed to be a homicide

The Medical Examiner has determined that Yvette Lydia Morin, 28, died from a gunshot wound and the manner in which she died was a homicide.

Downtown Division patrol officers responded to an address near 107 Avenue and 106 Street at approximately 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, where Morin was found in a basement suite in medical distress.

Paramedics treated and transported the woman to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she succumbed to her injuries a half-hour later.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate the death, which is Edmonton’s 27^th homicide of 2015.

Upon arrival, officers found a female in medical distress in a basement suite. Paramedics treated and transported the woman to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a half-hour later.

Homicide detectives have since taken over the investigation and are currently interviewing several potential witnesses.

Investigators release photo in attempt to locate witnesses to Dec. 4th pedestrian fatal

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigations Unit is releasing an image shot by a photo radar unit, in an attempt to locate several drivers who may have witnessed a fatal collision involving a male pedestrian Dec. 4th, at 118 Avenue and 55 Street.

Investigators are looking for the drivers of a black Kia Soul, a red Mazda Protégé, a white Toyota Camry Coop Taxi and a black four-door vehicle, that drove through that intersection directly after the 54-year-old male was struck and killed (see photo below).

At approximately 5:40 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, Northeast Division patrol members were dispatched to the area of 118 Avenue and 55 Street, after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

MCIU investigators believe a 54-year-old male had just stepped off the curb at a marked crosswalk and was walking northbound across 118 Avenue, when he was allegedly struck by a westbound Chevy Malibu being driven by 21-year-old male.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics.

Holiday Grinch steals property, not spirit, from churches

It appears at least one thief is embracing the holiday spirit in a very untraditional way – by targeting churches in several early-morning break and enters. Southwest and West division officers are investigating seven alleged church break-and-enters that occurred between Nov. 4^th and Dec. 8^th. In most of the incidents, the suspect(s) gained entrance to the church and offices, by prying open exterior and interior doors.

The suspect(s) stole laptops, iPads, cash and a guitar, in one instance.

Police locate third man in connection to shooting death

Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section detectives have announced that all three men alleged to have participated in the April 6, 2015, murder of Trevor Keith Deleeuw are now in custody.

On Monday, November 30, 2015, Shayne Fry, 28, was arrested in Ontario on an outstanding warrant for second degree murder. The arrest was carried out by the Niagara Regional Police Service after they located Fry in a residence in Niagara.

The male was brought back to Edmonton where EPS Homicide detectives formally processed the criminal charges on Saturday, December 5, 2015.

The homicide investigation has concluded, detectives are not looking for any additional suspects.

Background:

On Monday, April 6, 2015, Edmonton Homicide detectives became involved in the suspicious death of Trevor Keith Deleeuw, 25, following the discovery of his body on a roadway in St. Albert.

The St. Albert RCMP initial investigation revealed that a second crime scene was located in a parking lot in the area of 215 Street and 115 Avenue in Edmonton. The westend location was later established to be the initial scene whereby Deleeuw was shot around 9 p.m. Two days later, the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s autopsy revealed the cause of death to be gunshot wounds.

On Sept. 1, 2015, David Klassen, 26, was the first to be charged with second degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, assault with a weapon, and disguise with intent in the death of Mr. Deleeuw.

On Oct. 28, 2015 Homicide detectives charged Joseph Charron, 26, with second degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, assault with a weapon, and disguise with intent in connection with the death.

With two of the males in custody, police issued a warrant for second degree murder on November 6, 2015, in an attempt to locate the third male allegedly involved in the homicide, Shayne Fry, 28.

Deleeuw’s death was the 6^th homicide of 2015.

Apartment fire death classified as homicide

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has confirmed that the death of a 54-year-old man following a downtown apartment fire was a homicide.

Gregory Allan Fenton, 54, died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire. He passed away in hospital on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015.

Homicide detectives and the EPS Arson Unit continue to investigate.

Background:

A man, sent to hospital after fire broke out at an apartment complex on Nov. 29, 2015, has died.

The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate after officers responded to the report of a fire at an apartment building in the area of 115 Street and 107 Avenue at approximately 7:40 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015.

A 54-year-old man was treated and transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He passed away in hospital on Dec. 4, 2015.

Eleven years later, Maggie Burke’s disappearance remains a mystery

Eleven years ago today, on Dec. 9, 2004, Maggie Burke, 21 at the time, vanished from the streets of downtown Edmonton, leaving behind a family who continues to mourn her mysterious disappearance today.

Investigators believe foul play was involved in Maggie’s disappearance, and hope by speaking publicly about Maggie’s disappearance today, will encourage someone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

“I’m doing this because my family needs answers,” said an emotional Marie Burke, Maggie’s mother. “We need to find out what happened to Maggie. Also, I want my granddaughter, Pipon, to grow up knowing that we have, and will continue to make every effort to find her mother.”

Maggie Burke (see photos below) was last seen in the area of 95 Street and 118 Avenue, near the location where Crime Stoppers erected a billboard this week seeking tips on the missing Edmonton woman. She was believed to be meeting a friend, at that time.

“Someone, somewhere, must have information about Maggie’s disappearance,” said Sgt. Neil Zurawell, of the EPS Missing Persons Unit. “It’s a parent’s worst nightmare – the death or mysterious disappearance of your child. If you have any information at all that might help with our investigation, please contact police or Crime Stoppers. There’s a family here that needs our help.”

She is described as an Aboriginal female, 5’7”, 125 pounds, brown eyes, with brown hair and red streaks at the time. She had a marijuana leaf tattoo on her left arm.

Impaired driver facing multiple charges, after city-wide criminal flight

A Calgary man is facing multiple charges, following an hour-and-half criminal flight that traversed the city.

At approximately 3:15 p.m. today, Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, Southeast Division patrol members responded to a call from a concerned motorist, after observing an alleged impaired driver near 75 Street and 98 Avenue. Police located the suspect vehicle, a Chevy Silverado, near 75 Street and 118 Avenue, and officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The suspect then entered into a criminal flight, accelerating eastbound down 118 Avenue. Officers did not engage in a pursuit, instead calling in Air 1 to following the suspect vehicle, for reasons of public safety.

Air 1 continued to follow the suspect vehicle as he headed eastbound on the Yellowhead, crossing into Strathcona County and then back into City of Edmonton jurisdiction. Officers successfully deployed a spike belt in an industrial area in southeast Edmonton near 25 Street and 76 Street.

The suspect vehicle, which was then identified as being stolen, continued travelling west down Argyll, despite sustaining two flat, front tires. The suspect vehicle then collided with another vehicle near 53 Avenue and the Whitemud, before Tactical and Canine members were able to successfully box in the suspect vehicle near 178 Street and the Whitemud.

The suspect vigorously resisted arrest, and members were forced to deploy a Conductive Energy Weapon (Taser) to bring the intoxicated male into custody at approximately 4:25 p.m.

Joel Henley, 33, of Calgary, is facing multiple charges including but not limited to, criminal flight (x2), possession of stolen property under $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, criminal hit and run, possession of a dangerous weapon, criminal dangerous driving, resisting arrest, fraudulent concealment and two warrants for theft and mischief.

More than 20 members from multiple divisions and units were dispatched to deal with this incident, the second such extensive criminal flight response in the last 39 hours. More than 55 EPS members and Strathcona County RCMP members were dispatched early Thursday morning to deal with another extensive criminal flight that culminated with the arrest of a male and female suspect.

Male pedestrian struck, killed on 118 Avenue

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal collision involving a male pedestrian that occurred this evening in northeast Edmonton.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., Northeast Division patrol members were dispatched to the area of 118 Avenue and 55 Street, after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

While the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, MCIU investigators believe a 54-year-old male had just stepped off the curb at a marked crosswalk and was southbound across 118 Avenue, when he was allegedly struck by a Chevy Malibu being driven by 21-year-old male.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics.

No charges have been laid at this time.

Autopsy determines cause of death was gunshot wounds

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has confirmed that the male found Thursday morning in an alley died as a result of gunshot wounds.

The victim is Alex Leonard Greg Contois, 31.

The deceased’s family has been notified and police do not have a suspect in custody at this time.

Deceased man found in hallway declared a homicide

The autopsy has been completed on a man who was found dead in a hallway of a building at 4908-134 Ave, on Dec. 1, 2015.

The death of Baljit Singh Bhamra, 49, has been determined to be a homicide. The cause of death is not being released at this time for investigative reasons.

Homicide Detectives have charged Donovan Howard Wentworth, 18, with 2^nd degree murder.

Detectives continue to investigate.

2,316 violations issued in Big Ticket Event

The Edmonton Police Service and automated enforcement issued 2,316 violations last month during Operation 24 Hours.

During the 24-hour enforcement period on Nov. 18, 2015, 1,971 speeding tickets were issued. There were also 345 violations issued for seatbelt infractions, distracted driving, impaired driving, traffic safety violations and Criminal Code violations.

This is a slight decrease from the 2,534 violations issued in the August 2015 enforcement blitz.

With 13 pedestrian fatalities in 2015 – a number unmatched since 2007 – enforcement campaigns such as Operation 24 Hours serve as a reminder to drivers to make safe decisions behind the wheel.  

The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year to improve traffic safety on city roadways.

Man dies in hospital after apartment fire

Northeast Division members investigating afternoon shooting

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating an afternoon shooting that sent a 26-year-old male to hospital in critical condition. Northeast patrol members responded to a residential address near 83 Street and 171 Avenue at approximately 4:15 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, after receiving a weapons complaint.

Upon arrival, EPS members found a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, EPS members found a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics treated and transported the male to hospital in critical condition. The victim’s condition has since been upgraded to stable.  

Investigators are looking for two vehicles of interest that were seen leaving the area at the time of the shooting. A four-door blue or green Honda or Toyota vehicle and a two-door grey Dodge Charger with tinted windows.

Female pedestrian struck in marked crosswalk at Londonderry Mall

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigations Unit is investigating a collision that occurred this afternoon in northeast Edmonton that sent a senior female pedestrian to hospital with serious injuries.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., Northeast Division patrol members were dispatched to Londonderry Mall, after receiving reports that a senior citizen had been struck by a vehicle. Investigators believe a 74-year-old woman was walking eastbound in a marked crosswalk on the east side of the mall, when she was struck by a Toyota Sienna being operated by a 42-year-old female driver.

Paramedics treated and transported the woman to hospital, where she remains in serious condition this evening after sustaining numerous injuries.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Toyota van.

One bad guy + one bad girl = major crime spree, requiring extensive police response

A crime spree that stretched from southwest Edmonton to Strathcona County, also stretched the resources of the Edmonton Police Service earlier this morning.

Two Southwest Division members were responding to a low level shoplifting call in a parkade near 109 Street and Whyte Avenue earlier this morning, just after midnight. The call quickly progressed into a high priority, criminal flight incident requiring the response of more than 55 EPS members from multiple sections and the assistance of the Strathcona County RCMP, where two suspects were eventually arrested.

“This was just one call for service out of 150,000 that will require an officer to respond this year,” said Southwest Division Insp. Erik Johnson, noting the combined number of emergency and non-emergency calls to EPS is anticipated to be approximately 920,000 for 2015.

“Certainly, not all calls for service require this level of extensive response, which in this instance involved everyone from patrol, to tactical, Canine, Air 1, Robbery, CIS and Traffic. But it definitely paints a vivid picture of how a simple shoplifting call can stretch police resources to the max on any given day, not to mention the hours of paperwork required thereafter.”

Two suspects reportedly fled the Whyte Avenue parkade in a stolen Toyota Tundra vehicle, colliding with a police cruiser, after being approached by officers. The suspects allegedly abandoned the vehicle in the Belgravia area, before trying to gain access to three different residences, the first at gunpoint with a home owner.

The suspects eventually stole a Volkswagen Tiguan from a nearby residence, before reaching speeds in excess of 150 km/h, while driving against traffic down Gateway Boulevard.

With Air 1 overhead, the two suspects then allegedly robbed a convenience store clerk at gunpoint in a store near 17 Street and 23 Avenue in southeast Edmonton.

The suspects fled from the store northbound and made their way onto the Whitemud Freeway at the Anthony Henday, where a minor collision occurred and a failed car-jacking attempt with the same vehicle.

The suspects fled from this location on the Whitemud and went north on Range Road 233 into Sherwood Park. Police were able to successfully immobilize the suspect vehicle at this point, and arrest a male and female suspect who had fled on foot for a short distance, with the assistance of Canine and Tactical Unit members.

Jake Wells, 23, and Adara Gunnarson, 26, are facing multiple weapon, break and enter, armed robbery and various other traffic-related charges, which investigators continue to finalize today.

Arrest made in Oct. 30th double homicide

Homicide detectives have made an arrest in connection with the double homicide that occurred in southwest Edmonton on Friday, Oct. 30th, 2015.

Philip Jason Vanderwell, 27, is facing two counts of first degree murder in relation to the deaths of Daniel Andrew Edward Fullerton, 28, and Teresa Wilk, 28, last month.

Fullerton and WILK died as a result of gunshot wounds. Their bodies were discovered in a vehicle that was parked on the street in a suburban southwest Edmonton neighbourhood that Friday evening.

Background:
Southwest Division patrol members responded to a residential neighbourhood near 173 Street and 11 Avenue SW, after receiving a 911 call at approximately 7:40 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, 2015.

Upon arrival, officers found two deceased individuals in the front seat of a vehicle parked nearby on the street.

Police warn online shoppers to use caution; stolen devices may appear online

The Edmonton Police Service is urging the public to be mindful when purchasing cellular devices and tablets online through unknown sellers.

During the month of November, police responded to a number of cell phone and tablet thefts at various retail locations throughout the city and police believe these stolen devices may find their way for sale online.

Many of the devices are believed to be blacklisted, meaning they wouldn’t necessarily function although appearing new and unused.

The Edmonton Police Service always encourages buyers to use caution when engaging in any online or private sale through an unknown buyer.

Although the precautions below do not guarantee the legitimacy of an item, avoid becoming a victim with the following tips:

• Conduct all transactions in person, in a public location with video surveillance.
• Ask for a bill of sale and identification from the seller. Ensure the identification provided matches the seller.
• Be wary of stolen or blacklisted devices which may appear new or unused. When possible, meet at a location where the devices can be verified.

Fatal single vehicle collision in southeast Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigations Unit is investigating a single vehicle fatal collision that occurred today, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015.

At approximately 11:20 a.m., Police and EMS responded to a single vehicle collision at 85 Street and 71 Avenue. It is reported that the vehicle was travelling southbound on 85 Street when it collided with a tree on a residential yard at 71 Avenue.

There were three occupants in the vehicle. Two female passengers were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 90-year-old male driver was pronounced deceased on scene.

Initial investigations indicate the driver may have experienced a medical episode. The investigation is on-going.

This is Edmonton’s 33rd traffic fatality in 2015.

Police continue to investigate suspicious death in northeast Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section continues to investigate a suspicious death that was reported early this morning in northeast Edmonton.

It is reported neighbours called police to check on the welfare of a man who was found in the hallway of a building at 4908 134 Avenue around 6:15 a.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015.

EPS and EMS arrived on scene where they found a deceased male.

Homicide detectives have been speaking to witnesses today.

The next of kin has not yet been notified so the age of the deceased will not be released at this time.

Police do not believe this occurrence is associated to any other homicide.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015 at 9 a.m.

Police investigate collision between car and pedestrian

The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate a collision that occurred early this morning (Tuesday, Dec. 1 2015) between a vehicle and pedestrian.

It was reported that a VW Jetta was traveling westbound on 118 Avenue when it allegedly struck a pedestrian between 88 Street and 89 Street around 3:15 a.m. The pedestrian was not at a marked crosswalk. EMS responded, treated and transported the 23-year-old male pedestrian to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The 34-year-old male driver did not report any injuries.

No charges have been laid on the driver. The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit continues to investigate.
