EPS supports Supervised Injection Sites with integrated support services

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) put forth today its position on Supervised Injection Sites (SIFs), as up to four facilities are being considered in Edmonton.

The EPS recognizes the value of SIFs and their harm reduction objectives, but believes they can only be successful if support services - such as medical assistance, food and shelter, mental health and addictions counseling - are provided to users right on site.

“This is our opportunity to get this right,” says Chief Rod Knecht. “A concerted, integrated and sustained effort is required to help drug users manage their addictions. Without such a support structure in place, SIFs in Edmonton will simply enable their use of illegal drugs, prolong their misery and further their victimization.”

The EPS also has the responsibility of balancing the needs of the users of SIFs with the needs of the community for public safety. The Federal Government’s revision of Bill C-37 requires that research and evidence must be presented on whether a SIF will impact crime in the community before approval is considered.

“Supporters for SIFs speak of reductions in overdose deaths and other harm reduction, but what impact does the open drug use in adjacent streets, the filth and offensive graffiti and squalor proximal to the facility, have on the community? We need to consider this as well, to ensure public safety,” says Chief Knecht.
