On July 27, 2016, Brandon Calahoo, now age 22 was arrested and initially charged with aggravated assault after EPS Child Protection Section became involved in an investigation related to a two-month-old female infant who was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
On August 8, 2016, the infant succumbed to her injuries, and EPS Homicide Section became involved in the investigation.
The Edmonton Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on the infant, but was not immediately able to make a determination about the cause of death. In January 2017, the Medical Examiner confirmed that the cause of death was criminal, at which time the Crown Prosecutor was notified, and upgraded the charges against Calahoo to second degree murder and failing to provide the necessaries of life.
The case is currently before the Courts.
Due to the unusual circumstances of this investigation and the long delay between initial charges and upgraded charges, a media release was not issued in January 2017 when charges were upgraded by the Crown. This homicide is included in the 42 homicides that occurred in 2016.
