Community celebrates 10th Annual McCauley Cup

Downtown Division police officers will be lacing up their skates tomorrow afternoon for a friendly game of hockey marking the 10th annual McCauley Cup.

“This is a big day for us,” says Const. Andrew Melney with Downtown Division and organizer of the McCauley Cup. “Today marks the tenth year of a very special event – an event that has been a milestone in the community and continues to gain more and more popularity by the year.”

“Most importantly, it’s an event for the kids of McCauley and a chance for us police officers to build and maintain those meaningful relationships with the community,” says Melney. “It’s also an opportunity for us to show the kids we are everyday people too.”

The McCauley Cup was born 10 years ago by a Downtown Beat officer who wanted to bridge the gap between police and the community. Since then, the game has grown in popularity and no matter the weather, youth from the neighbourhood are always eager to showcase their skills to their opponent police officers and spectators.

Opening remarks will commence at 12:40 p.m. and the puck drops at 1 p.m. The event takes place at the McCauley outdoor skating rink (10750 96 Street). All media are invited and welcome for photo/video opportunities.

Players and visitors will be able to enjoy a bonfire, hot drinks and some light refreshments. All spectators are encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation to the Edmonton Food Bank.

The EPS would like to thank the gracious sponsors of this event: United Cycle, Sport Central, K.I.D.S., Elite Sport Awards, and the Oilers Alumni.

The EPS would also like to thank the Edmonton Police Foundation and the McCauley Community League for their continued support.

Little "Milo" is home for the holidays

Little “Milo” will be home for the holidays after all, thanks in part to a tip from the public and some diligent police work over the last several days.

“My family and I are very grateful to the public and to the Edmonton Police Service for their diligence and hard work in returning our puppy to us,” said Tianna Sachdeva, 23. “This is definitely the best Christmas present my family has ever received.”

Milo, a five-month-old Havanese male puppy was reported stolen to police by his owners last Thursday, Dec. 20th, as a result of a residential B&E in northwest Edmonton.

On Saturday evening, Dec. 22, security personnel at a north-end hospital recognized a puppy matching Milo’s description in the care of a woman at the health-care facility. Security members then engaged the female suspect in conversation, and were able to confirm her identity, before she left the hospital.

The dog napper was subsequently recognized by an EPS officer Sunday afternoon at Kingsway Mall, after being arrested for an unrelated shoplifting incident.

The puppy received a tearful welcome home Sunday evening, when the investigating officer reunited Milo with his family.

“The officer called and said he needed to speak with us,” said Sachdeva. “We had no idea that he had located Milo, until we saw him walking up the sidewalk with our puppy. We were all shocked and thrilled. I had to tell my mother to stop hugging Milo and crying so much, and to feed him. He looked pretty hungry.”

Amy Alook, 26, is facing charges of theft under $5,000 and breach of recognizance with further charges pending.

Background:

Northwest Division patrol members responded to a residence near 116 Avenue and 95 Street, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, after receiving a call regarding a residential B&E.

Video surveillance images (see below) show a female suspect walking away from the northwest Edmonton home with the family dog, “Milo” in her arms.

Police searching for the Grinch who stole “Milo”

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a female Grinch who stole a three-month-old Havanese puppy from a northwest home Thursday afternoon, during a residential break and enter.

Investigators believe the suspect targeted the residence to steal the family’s dog, as no other belongings were taken from the home. The couple were not home at the time of the B&E, and had left “Milo” in a kennel.

The couple, who are understandably upset by the loss of their new dog, not to mention the invasion of privacy, had just purchased the puppy and brought it home last month. They were looking forward to their first Christmas together with their new puppy.

The suspect is described as being a female, approximately 20 to 30 years of age, wearing black pants, a grey hoodie and beige jacket, at the time of the break and enter.

Anyone with information about the suspect’s identity or the whereabouts of “Milo” is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

The types of scams remain relatively unchanged. Fraudsters continue to pose as police officers and other government bodies in an attempt to obtain money from citizens. They often contact victims in a variety of ways, including over the phone, e-mail, text or social media – and in many cases these individuals often speak the same language as their victims and their calls may appear to come from legitimate police or government phone numbers.

“What has evolved is the method of payment demanded by fraudsters,” says Const. Tuyen Nguyen with the EPS Cyber Crimes Investigations Unit. “While gift cards were once the preferred payment of choice, fraudsters are now increasingly demanding payment in other forms such as BitCoin and e-transfers.”

Earlier this year EPS developed signage that was placed near BitCoin machines at cafes across the city to warn users that government bodies and police agencies do not accept payment for taxes and fines through BitCoin.  As the year progressed, police continued to receive consistent reports of online fraud and identity theft and felt additional crime prevention messaging was required.

“Front counter staff at several EPS divisions noticed an increase of reports of fraud and identity theft,” says Const. Kyle Pepper with Southwest Division.

“More specifically, we noticed the large majority of complainants were newcomers to the Edmonton area. As a result, the EPS developed a brochure that will be available at all EPS divisional stations and at other agencies that assist newcomers.”

“Our goal is to have the brochures developed in multiple languages in the near future.”

The messaging will also appear in multi-language ads across the city and online in 2019.

Citizens are reminded that government bodies such as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP):

  • do not threaten deportation or arrests of family members for non-payment,

  • do not demand immediate payment of taxes or fines over the phone via email or through social media; and

  • do not accept BitCoin, gift cards, e-mail or money transfers as a valid form of payment.

Do not provide personal or banking information by phone, email, text or social media as it may result in the loss of money and/or identity theft.

Anyone who believes they may have been defrauded this way is encouraged to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or dial #377 from a mobile phone. Contacting Equifax and Transunion, Canadian credit monitoring agencies, is also recommended.

If you have not lost money, but suspect you have been targeted, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Suspects responsible for front door B&E series arrested

A month-long investigation has led to the arrest of three suspects in connection to upwards of 30 front door breach B&Es in Edmonton and surrounding communities.

In early November, Southwest CIS detectives began investigating a series of residential, daytime B&Es, which saw two the suspects kick open the front doors of homes to gain entry. The suspects targeted in excess of 20 homes in Edmonton and another 10 in Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Devon and St Albert.

Once inside the suspects predominantly stole jewelry and firearms from residences throughout the series. In the most recent incident on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, the suspects were observed committing a B&E in nearby Devon, where a large quantity of firearms were allegedly stolen.

The suspects were followed until they split up with one going to a residence in Spruce Grove. The first suspect and a 32-year-old female were arrested at that location. The second suspect, a 32-year-old male, was followed and eventually arrested outside a residence in St. Albert, later the same day.

Search warrants were executed at both residences leading to the recovery of a significant amount of suspected stolen property.

Mitchell Andonov, 33, of Spruce Grove, and Michael Howard, 32, of St. Albert, are each facing 32 charges related to break and enter and possession of firearms.

Charges against the 32-year-old female have yet to be sworn before a Justice of the Peace, and therefore EPS isn’t releasing her name at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, and further charges are pending. The RCMP detachments in all four of these outlying communities were involved and assisted with the successful conclusion of this investigation. The EPS is grateful for their assistance.

You better watch out, you better take care, you better not be driving impaired!

The Edmonton Police Service will launch its 2018 Holiday Checkstop program Thursday evening, an annual initiative with the goal to help keep impaired drivers off city streets.

“The holidays are always a special time for friends and family coming home from around the province and country,” said Sgt. Rob Davis, of the EPS Impaired Driving Unit. “The public will see our officers working Checkstops across the city throughout the holidays, to help ensure everyone gets home safely.”

It will be business as usual, however, for the service’s Impaired Driving Unit, despite the ink barely being dry on the country’s cannabis legalization laws.

“Regardless if you’ve consumed too much alcohol, prescription medication and/or cannabis, plain and simple, it has always been a criminal offence to drive while being impaired,” explained Sgt. Davis. “You’re risking losing your licence, your job and you’re also risking your life, the lives of any other occupants in your vehicle and the lives of those on the roads around you.”

“Stay at home, or make plans to take a taxi or ride sharing service. As individuals, as a community, we need to take care of one another to ensure we all get home safely to our families.”

Police have always had the means to test drug-impaired driving, and those methods remain the same now that cannabis is legalized. If a police officer suspects that a driver is impaired by a drug, they will conduct a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) at the roadside. The SFST consists of some preliminary questions, an eye exam, and some movement tests. If the SFST indicates impairment, the driver will then be arrested and taken to a police station to be evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), who can demand a urine or blood sample. If the results from the laboratory confirm the DRE’s suspicion of impairment, charges can then be laid on the driver. Officers may also request an oral fluid sample at the roadside, which, if positive, will then trigger a DRE evaluation.

On Dec. 18, 2018, Mandatory Alcohol Screening will also come into effect. This change to the federal Criminal Code will remove the requirement for police to form grounds for requesting a breath sample. This means that police can conduct roadside alcohol testing on any person who has been lawfully stopped, whether or not there is suspicion that the person is impaired.

The EPS Checkstop program involves vehicle-stop locations and roving patrols across the city looking for impaired drivers. While it is aimed at detecting impaired drivers and removing them from the road, a large component is also aimed at educating the public of the dangers and consequences of impaired driving.

If you suspect a driver is impaired, please contact police as soon as possible to Curb the Danger:

  • Call 911 if it is safe to do so.  Calling 911 in an emergency, or to report an impaired driver, is permitted while driving under the distracted driving law.

  • Report the location, vehicle description, and licence plate number.

  • Keep the vehicle in sight but do not attempt to chase the vehicle, or break the law to do so.

In the interest of public safety, the EPS issued a media release on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, advising the public of Vincent Noseworthy, 39, who was charged in relation to a reported sexual assault. As a result of media and public assistance, additional complainants came forward and on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, Noseworthy was arrested and charged with sexual assault (x2), sexual assault with a weapon and choking with the intent to overcome resistance. Thieves increasingly thinking “inside” the box, and “outside” the home, this holiday season

The Edmonton Police Service is warning members of the public to be mindful of holiday parcels being shipped to their homes, following increased reports of parcel thefts across the city.

Between Nov. 1 and Nov. 28, 2018, EPS officers have investigated 17 parcel thefts throughout Edmonton.

“As the popularity of online shopping grows, so to does the number incidents reported to police related to parcel theft,” explained Staff Sgt. Darryl Fox, EPS Southwest Division. “Some companies will even offer their customers gift-wrapping services, which makes it pretty obvious for thieves to identify.”

Most recently, EPS has received reports of suspects allegedly following delivery trucks, before making off with the parcels once they’ve been dropped off at a residence. In one incident in southwest Edmonton, witnesses told police a Caucasian male in his mid-20s was spotted taking a parcel off a neighbour’s porch, before driving away in a silver Toyota Camry.

In another incident, witnesses reported seeing two males take a parcel from a nearby residence, before leaving the area on bicycles. On Nov. 19, 2018, a male suspect (see photo below) stole a parcel from a residential address near 106 Avenue 105 Street.

When shipping items purchased online, it is recommended that you use the delivery tracking app available at time of purchase, and do your best to have someone at home to receive the gift. If you’re unable to be at home on the day and time of delivery, customers may be able to contact the shipping company and ask them to deliver the item to your back porch or to another address.

Anyone who may have information about the suspect captured in the image below from the Nov. 19 incident, and/or any of the other parcel thefts across the city is encouraged to call the Edmonton Police Service Complaint Line at 780-423-4567 or the Edmonton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit your tip online at
