The Edmonton Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy this morning and confirmed Gherezghiher (Gary) Yemane, 63, died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The EPS Homicide Section continues to investigate Yemane’s death. It is not yet known if this was a targeted or random shooting.
“The information we have from Yemane’s family indicates he was very involved in his community,” says Staff Sgt. Bill Clark with the EPS Homicide Section. “Our investigators are working on multiple angles to determine what led to this tragic event and we’re asking the public for help – please contact police if you have information about this crime.”
Gary Yemane was not known to the Edmonton Police Service.
Police continue to search for a black, older sedan (possibly a Toyota) that was seen leaving the area of Ozerna Road at the time of the homicide.
This is Edmonton’s 23rd homicide in 2016.

Background:
The Edmonton Police Service responded to a report of shots fired near Ozerna Road, between 69 Street and 165 Avenue, at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2016. Northeast Division officers responded and found a male lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services declared the man deceased at the scene.
Police are searching for a black, older sedan (possibly a Toyota) that was seen leaving the area travelling southbound on Ozerna Road.
The lone occupant of the Toyota vehicle has been described as an East Indian male, late 20s to early 30s, with short dark hair and an average build (5’8”-5’10” and 180-200 lbs.). He was wearing a dark sweater and blue jeans.
