Reduce the risk of prescription drugs falling into the wrong hands

The Edmonton Police Service and police agencies across the country are encouraging the public to properly dispose of their unwanted, expired, or unused prescription drugs at their local pharmacy as part of National Prescription Drug Drop-off Day.

National Prescription Drug Drop-off Day provides an easy way for people to dispose of prescription drugs as well as provide awareness on the serious public health and safety impacts of prescription drug abuse in Canada.

“Taking prescription drugs that were not prescribed to you can lead to a life of addictions, a trip to the hospital or morgue. Think before you take that first step that could ruin your life,” says Det. Guy Pilon with the EPS Drug and Gang Section.

Certain prescription drugs, like opioids, stimulants, sedatives, and tranquilizers are associated with serious harms such as poisoning, addiction, overdose, and death if they fall into the wrong hands and are used without proper medical supervision.  The recreational use of prescription drugs also contributes to criminal behaviour such as drug-impaired driving, health care fraud, pharmacy robberies, and drug-trafficking.  Moreover, pharmaceuticals thrown into the trash or flushed down the drain can make their way into the water supply and have harmful effects on the environment.

The public can return any unwanted or outdated prescription medications to their local pharmacy at any time; however, prescription drugs are not accepted at police stations.  The Alberta Pharmacists’ Association (APA) administers the ENVIRx program that promotes the proper use of medications and their safe and environmentally-friendly disposal.  To find a participating pharmacy to dispose of your medications, please visit the APA website.  If you are looking for pharmacist in your area, or for information on how a pharmacist can help you, please visit the Alberta College of Pharmacists website.

Through National Prescription Drug Drop-off Day, approximately .5 tons of drugs were collected in 2015, and approximately 1.5 tons in 2014, and approximately 2.5 tons in 2013.  The initiative is supported by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police, Partnership for a Drug Free Canada, Health Canada, and Public Safety Canada.  To learn more, please watch the CACP video on YouTube, or visit the Government of Canada website.

“Online Buyer Beware” campaign promotes internet buy-and-sell safety

The Edmonton Police Service is launching “Online Buyer Beware” today, a campaign that urges citizens to use caution when shopping buy-and-sell websites.

“EPS officers respond to crimes generated from online buy-and-sell activities almost daily,” says Const. Rob Wellon with the Criminal Investigation Section in Northwest Division. “We need Edmontonians to make personal safety their top priority when shopping classified websites.”

“Online Buyer Beware” encourages citizens to make informed choices while using buy-and-sell sites, such as meeting in a well-lit, public location for transactions, questioning prices that seem too good to be true, asking sellers for an original receipt and using caution when purchasing e-tickets.

“We’ve seen citizens transfer payment and never receive an item, or unknowingly purchase stolen property that’s been put up for sale,” adds Const. Wellon. “E-ticket fraud is also a big problem – event tickets are copied and sold to multiple buyers who do not realize they purchased fraudulent tickets until they’re denied entry.”

In rare cases, Const. Wellon recalls instances where weapons have been produced and buyers have been personally robbed of their cash.

“We’ve apprehended individuals for selling stolen property who were carrying weapons at the time of transaction,” says Wellon. “Although this is a rarity, it’s still very concerning and we hope this campaign will serve as a reminder to keep safety front of mind.”

“Online Buyer Beware” was launched in response to the continuous number of online buy-and-sell complaints reported to the Edmonton Police Service.

The online campaign will run from throughout May and June on Kijiji, Facebook and EPS social media accounts. Citizens can find more information, including what do if you are a victim of crime, on the EPS website.

Tips for a safer online buy-and-sell experience…

While shopping online:

  • Print the online advertisement and keep a copy for your records.
  • Ask questions if an item is priced noticeably below market value. Why is the item discounted? Can the seller provide a purchase receipt?
  • Check the Canadian Police Information Centre database to see if an item has been reported stolen: http://ift.tt/1d7wT0Q
  • Be wary of e-tickets that can be easily reproduced and distributed.

When conducting transactions:

  • Conduct all transactions in person, in a well-lit, public location with video surveillance.
  • Ask for a bill of sale and identification from the seller. Ensure the identification provided matches the seller, and take a photo of the ID.
  • Do not transfer payment until you’ve seen the item you’re paying for.

If you are a victim of crime:

  • If you are a victim, always report the incident to police.
  • Report online buy-and-sell crime by attending an EPS community or divisional station, calling the police dispatch line at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
  • Do not report crime to EPS social media accounts.

EPS SENIOR PROTECTION UNIT

A 53-year-old Edmonton man is facing theft-related charges for allegedly defrauding his 94-year-old grandmother of more than $265,000 while holding the position of Power of Attorney.

The charges stem from a five-month investigation by the EPS Senior Protection detectives.

“This is a prime example of a senior citizen being preyed upon by a family member that she trusted,” said Det. Dave Huggins, formerly of EPS Senior Protection. “Sadly, both her health, and her grandson, failed her, at a time in her life when she should have been able to count on him.”

It is alleged that between August 2010 and August 2014, the accused male made out multiple cheques to himself, while acting as his grandmother’s attorney under an Enduring Power of Attorney. The fraud occurred, after his elderly grandmother was hospitalized following a stroke in 2010.

Elder Abuse detectives were contacted by the complainant, after she regained the capacity to make decisions in May 2014, and subsequently discovered the alleged fraud.

Jeffrey Edward Stals, 53, is charged with theft by person holding power of attorney and fraud over $5,000.

Two youths facing arson charges in connection with grass fires

Two Edmonton youths are facing arson-related charges in connection with a pair of grass fires that are alleged to have been deliberately set over the last week in southwest Edmonton.

In the most recent event, Southwest Division patrol officers responded to an area north of the Anthony Henday near 111 Street yesterday, Wednesday, May 11, 2016, after receiving several 911 calls from concerned citizens.

It was reported to police that three male suspects on bicycles had started a fire in a grassy area bordering the trees in a nearby ravine. Upon arrival, officers located and arrested two youths on scene. A third suspect turned himself into police later Wednesday evening.

Edmonton firefighters also responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire.

“We’ve all just witnessed the incredible devastation and threat to life that a fire can cause given the extremely dry conditions out there right now,” said Southwest Insp. Erik Johnson. “Surely, no one should need to be reminded, after seeing those frightening images from Fort McMurray last week.

“I want to be clear. Anyone caught endangering the lives of our city’s residents with this type of irresponsible behavior will be prosecuted to the maximum allowed under the law.”

The two youths are also facing charges in connection with an arson that occurred near the Century Park LRT on Tuesday, May 10th. It was reported that two males set fire to a grassy area behind the Century Park LRT Station. Citizens in the area were able to successfully extinguish that fire.

The two teenagers, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, have been each charged with arson (x2) and possession of incendiary devices (x2). The third youth, who was not involved, was not charged.

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 36-year-old St. Albert resident with numerous offences including dangerous driving causing death in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision on March 12th that claimed the life of a 29-year-old Edmonton man and sent several others to hospital.

One man is dead and another is in critical condition in hospital in connection with a three-vehicle collision that occurred in northeast Edmonton on that Saturday morning.

The driver and passenger of the Lancer were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Avenger did not sustain injuries, and is then alleged to have fled the scene on foot.
