Public information and warning: sexual offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Bernard Jakubec is a convicted sexual offender and the Edmonton Police Service has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another sexual offence against someone under the age of 16 while in the community and, as such, the Edmonton Police Service has a duty to warn the public of the risk Jakubec poses.

Jakubec was recently released from Chilliwack, BC and will be residing in the Edmonton area.  He has been placed on a recognizance and will be monitored by Alberta Probation and the Behavioural Assessment Unit of the Edmonton Police Service.

 

Jakubec has a history of sexually assaulting male and female victims, aged 14 and under after having lured or chased them into secluded public areas.  Jakubec’s risk for sexual violence increases significantly if under the influence of any intoxicants.

 

Jakubec has been placed on a series of court ordered conditions including:

 

  • He must keep the peace and be of good behavior

  • He shall not consume or possess alcohol or any controlled substance as listed in the Controlled Drug and Substances Act excluding prescription medication prescribed to him by a licensed physician or a dentist, and he can only consume prescribed medication in the dosage prescribed by the doctor or dentist.

  • He shall not enter any bar, tavern, liquor store, beer and/or wine store, or business whose primary purpose is the sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages.

  • He shall not attend within 300 metres of any park, playground, school ground, swimming area, daycare, recreation/community centre, library or any other place where children under the age of 16 can reasonably be expected to be present, including other places identified in writing by his probation officer except with the prior written permission of his probation officer.

  • He must not seek, obtain or continue any employment, whether or not the employment is remunerated, or become or be a volunteer in any capacity, that involves being in a position of trust or authority towards persons under the age of 16 years.

  • He is prohibited from using a computer system within the meaning of subsection 342.1(2) for the purpose of communicating with a person under the age of fourteen years.

               

Anyone with any information about any potential breaches of these conditions by Jakubec can contact the EPS at 780-423-4567.

 

The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community.
