Charges laid in March 28 homicide and stabbing

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 38-year-old male in relation to two serious stabbings that occurred last week.

Clayton Thomas Berard, 38, was arrested on the evening of March 28, 2019. Berard is charged with first degree murder and breach of recognizance (x2) in relation to the stabbing death of a 48-year-old female on the morning of March 28, 2019.

 

Berard is also charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and breach of recognizance (x2) in relation to the stabbing of a 49-year-old male on the evening of March 28, 2019.

Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased in this investigation for the following reasons: it does not serve an investigative purpose and the EPS has a duty to protect the privacy rights of victims and their families.


Background

 

At approximately 7:15 a.m. on March 28, 2019, police responded to the area of 100 Street and 105A Avenue on a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they discovered an injured woman lying on the ground. The female was treated and transported to hospital by EMS, where she was pronounced deceased.

 

At approximately 7:10 p.m. on March 28, 2019, officers responded to the report of a stabbing in the area of 101 Street and 105 Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an injured 49-year-old male. EMS treated and transported the male to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The male was later declared to be in stable condition.

 

Autopsy results released by the Edmonton Medical Examiner on Friday, March 29, 2019, confirmed the 48-year-old female died as a result of stab wounds, and the manner of death is homicide.
