Youth charged following break-and-enter, firearms seizure

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a male youth from Spruce Grove following a break-and-enter to an Edmonton business earlier this week.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, police responded to the report of a break-and-enter to a business in the area of 115 Avenue and 149 Street. It was reported to police that a male suspect had entered the firearms business and was removing a variety of items, including firearms, ammunition and military surplus items. The suspect then reportedly left the stolen items in front of the business and was seen by police fleeing the area with a firearm.

 

With assistance from EPS Air One and the EPS Tactical Unit, West Division officers arrested the suspect in a nearby industrial compound. Officers also located a reported stolen vehicle in the area that they believe was used during the theft and contained a loaded firearm.

 

Following a thorough investigation, and with assistance from the Stony Plain RCMP, officers searched a residence in Spruce Grove where additional stolen firearms and ammunition were seized. Investigators believe the male may also be linked to similar incidents that took place in the Spruce Grove area in 2018.

In total, officers seized 30 firearms, more than 2000 rounds of ammunition and a variety of military surplus items, including bayonets and knives.

 

A 17-year-old male has subsequently been charged with 20 offences, including break-and-enter to steal firearms (x3), theft of motor vehicles and other firearms related charges.

 

Officers continue to investigate.

Missing 31-year-old man located

The 31-year-old man who was reported missing on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 has been located.

Timothy Green was located safe and unharmed this evening, Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019.

Man sought by EPS for firearm-related offences located in Saskatchewan; police lay charges against second suspect

Police have charged two men in relation to firearm and kidnapping-offences earlier this month.

On Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at approximately 7:30 a.m. police were dispatched to a suite in the area of 118 Avenue and 95 Street regarding a mischief complaint. When officers arrived, they observed a broken glass door. Upon further investigation, officers located several bullet holes throughout the apartment; however no one was located inside the suite.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at approximately 4:30 a.m. numerous rounds were allegedly fired outside an establishment in the area of 124 Avenue and 142 Street, striking at least one vehicle in the parking lot. Multiple suspects were reportedly witnessed fleeing the scene in a Hyundai Elantra.

Upon further investigation, officers determined that the male driver of the Hyundai Elantra was approached by the male suspects involved in the altercation and was allegedly ordered at gunpoint to drive them to a different location. The male driver complied and suffered non-life-threatening injuries in relation to this incident, but did not require treatment from EMS. Investigators do not believe the driver was known to the suspects.

Investigators believe both incidents to be connected.

Abdi Kafor Mahamud Hirsi, 32, is charged with robbery with a firearm (x2), kidnapping with a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a restricted weapon, as well as several other firearm-related offences.

Ahmed Osman, 30, was also charged with robbery with a firearm, kidnapping with a firearm and breach of recognizance (x2).

With the assistance of the Moose Jaw Police Service, the two male suspects were taken into custody in Saskatchewan yesterday (Jan. 28, 2019). Osman is charged in relation to the incident on Jan. 19, 2019, while Hirsi is charged in relation to both incidents.

The Edmonton Police Service previously issued a news release on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 seeking the public’s assistance in locating Hirsi.

Police request public’s assistance locating missing man

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 31-year-old man.

Timothy Green, 31, was last seen at his residence on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, in the area of 112 Avenue and 86 Street. Green was reported missing by an individual at the residence on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019.

 

Green is described as an indigenous male with brown eyes and brown hair. He is 6’1” tall and weighs approximately 177 lbs.

Green’s disappearance is considered to be out of character, and as a result, there are concerns for his well-being. There are, however, no indications of foul play at this time.

Autopsy results confirm male died from a gunshot wound

An autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiner has confirmed that a 23-year-male died from a gunshot wound on Jan. 21, and the manner of death is homicide.

Manvir Singh Sidhu, 23, was found lying on the ground on Crabapple Crescent in The Orchards at Ellerslie, at approximately 7:35 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate this murder, the city’s fifth homicide of 2019.

Investigators are urging anyone with information in relation to this homicide to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

Every investigation is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided to release the name of the deceased in this investigation for the following reasons: it serves an investigative purpose.

Background:
Southeast Division patrol officers responded to several 911 calls in connection to gunshots being heard in The Orchards at Ellerslie, a neighbourhood just south of Summerside.

Upon arrival, EMS paramedics were tending to a young male, who was lying on the street on Crabapple Crescent, with undisclosed injuries. The male was rushed to hospital by paramedics, where he would later succumb to his injuries.

It’s the coolest time of year again!

The annual Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run’s Polar Plunge event is on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Lake Summerside. This is the time when you rinse last year away and shock yourself into 2019 for Special Olympics Alberta.

Each year the Edmonton Police Service, local law enforcement partners, and Special Olympics athletes take this breathtaking leap for charity. This year, Canadian figure skating champion, Jamie Sale, challenged interim Chief Kevin Brezinski to jump in and we can’t wait to see how many citizens are going to take the challenge with us.

"Everyone who takes this five second jump into Lake Summerside is providing opportunities for thousands of Special Olympics Alberta athletes," explains Constable Amanda Trenchard. "It may seem like a small feat, but this entertaining experience changes lives."

It’s not too late to dive in:

Interested participants can register online as a team or an individual. Anyone 16 years old and up can register for the plunge; underage participants just need their legal guardian to sign a waiver. There is a requirement that all plungers must raise a minimum of $75; but the more you raise, the closer you are to prizes! Walk-in participants on Sunday are welcome if you’re looking for a last minute Sunday activity.

Pedestrian succumbs to injuries following Stony Plain Road collision

The 32-year-old man who sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a truck on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019 succumbed to his injuries in hospital today, Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. 

The EPS Major Collision Investigations Section has determined that the male’s death is non-criminal. No charges are being laid against the 55-year-old driver of the truck.

 

Background

 

At approximately 8:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019, West Division police officers responded to the report of a collision in the area of Stony Plain Road and 215 Street (Winterburn Road). Witnesses reported to police that a loaded semi-trailer dump truck travelling westbound on Stony Plain Road struck a pedestrian who stepped in front of the vehicle near the 215 Street overpass.

 

EMS responded, treated and transported the 32-year-old male pedestrian to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 55-year-old male driver of the truck was not injured.

 

Officers closed Stony Plain Road westbound at 215 Street briefly to investigate the collision. The semi-trailer dump truck remained at the scene.
