Police arrest one man, issue warrant for second in pharmacy robberies

The Edmonton Police Service’s Robbery Section has arrested one male and is searching for a second suspect in a series of south side pharmacy robberies.

Tyson Shaw, 24, was arrested on Feb 5, 2021 in relation to a robbery series involving several Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacies and one cannabis shop in recent months.  He was charged with robbery (x7), disguised with intent (x6), possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public (x8), use of imitation firearm while committing an indictable offense and assault with a weapon.

A second suspect has been identified as Korson Skelhorn, 26. Skelhorn is described as 5’9” tall, weighing approximately 170 lbs, with brown eyes and black hair.

Background

Between Dec. 21, 2020 and Jan. 6, 2021, four Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacies and one cannabis shop were the target of armed, violent robberies. The suspects reportedly used a variety of weapons, including an imitation handgun. In one of the occurrences, pepper spray was discharged at witnesses.

The robberies occurred on:

• Dec. 21, 2020 at 8:45 p.m. at the Shoppers Drug Mart at 6290 199 Street
• Dec. 28, 2020 at 9:50 p.m. at the Shoppers Drug Mart at 5990 Mullen Way
• Jan. 2, 2021 at 10:06 p.m. at Plant Life Cannabis at 10185 186 St
• Jan. 4, 20121 at 9:53 p.m. at Shoppers Drug Mart at 1024 Webber Greens Drive
• Jan. 6, 2021 at 10:35 p.m. at Shoppers Drug Mart 11120 Ellerslie Road

Five arrested, weapons and drugs seized at northwest Edmonton residence

The Edmonton Police Service has arrested five individuals on 35 outstanding warrants and laid 19 new charges following the execution of a search warrant at a northwest Edmonton residence last week.

In January 2021, the EPS Alberta Avenue BEATS team initiated an investigation into suspected drug dealing activities at a residential property in the neighbourhood. On Friday, Feb. 5, 2021, the BEATS team, the EPS Tactical Unit and the EPS Canine Unit executed a search warrant at the residence in the area of 112 Avenue and 93 Street. Five individuals, two males and three females, were arrested as a result. During the search of the residence, police located drugs, firearms, replica firearms, ammunition, body armour and cash, including:

• 26.5 grams methamphetamine (estimated street value $2650)
• 1911 handgun
• Sawed off .22 calibre rifle
• GSG-16 firearm
• two airsoft firearms
• Body armour
• Approximately $2000 in cash
• Cellphone
• A variety of items consistent with the sale of controlled substances

Kasey Hetherington, 23, Rayannen Anderson 25, Michelle Smith, 54, and Saydie Desjarlais, 24, were all taken into custody for a total of 34 outstanding warrants, including theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, break and enter, fraud under $5,000, theft under $5,000, possession of someone else’s identity document and failure to attend court.

David Simard, 28, was also taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with a probation order and is now facing 19 additional charges including, possess prohibited firearm (x6), possess body armour without valid permit, possess stolen property under $5,000 (x2), possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of firearm knowing possession is unauthorized.

Police seek assistance to ID suspects in robbery series

The Edmonton Police Service’s Robbery Section is warning the public and seeking tips in a violent robbery series.

Between July 2020 and February 2021, at least 14 armed, violent robberies or attempted robberies have occurred at pharmacies, cell phone stores and a jewelry/antique store.

In most of the robberies, multiple suspects reportedly enter the store, produce a weapon (usually a knife or bear spray) and bind the staff’s hands with plastic bags or tape. In one instance, it was reported that the suspects physically assaulted the staff, causing minor injuries.

The suspects are targeting large quantities of narcotics, including Cotridin, Percocet, Oxycodone, and other opioids, as well as new cell phones and cash. Investigators believe that a large group of at least 10 associated individuals are responsible for the robberies.

Six males have been arrested and charged in relation to several of the robberies, but police believe there are more suspects involved. Akok Aken, 19; Aken Aken, 18; Bradley Smith, 25; Malith Yom 18; Mahad Ibrahinadan, 20; and one youth were all charged with robbery, forcible confinement, disguise with intent to conceal and possession of a dangerous weapon.

“The most useful evidence we’ve had so far has been from locations with high quality video surveillance systems,” says Det. David Green, with EPS Robbery Section. “In addition to that, we recommend that pharmacies talk to their staff about remaining vigilant, trusting their instincts, and if your store is one that requires patrons to scan or be buzzed in, do not admit people who are behaving in a suspicious manner. This could include carrying suspicious items, like bags or tape, attempting to hide their identity, attempting to enter in groups, and loitering outside or surveilling the store.”

Store and pharmacy staff are advised never to confront suspects, but to try to observe as much as possible, including suspect and vehicle descriptions, and call police as soon as they are able.

TRAP already having significant impact in 2021; 50 stolen vehicles & trailers recovered over last five weeks

Only five weeks into 2021 and the EPS Targeted Response to Auto-Theft Prevention team (TRAP) has already recovered 50 stolen vehicles and trailers valued at more than $1.3M from city streets.

“We’re only just over a month into 2021 and already TRAP teams have made a significant impact in helping to keep the streets of our city a bit safer,” stated EPS Sgt. Ian Strom. “We’re always busy this time of year, especially when the dreaded deep freeze arrives. That’s when citizens sometimes take unnecessary risks by leaving their vehicles idling, often with keys in them.”

In its most recent arrest, at approximately 10 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021, Southwest Division Patrol members located a stolen 2005 Toyota Matrix parked in the area of 112 Street and 73 Avenue. The vehicle was stolen from a nearby residence, after it was left idling with the keys in the ignition.

Members of the EPS Targeted Response to Auto-Theft Prevention team (TRAP) were contacted and took over surveillance of the stolen vehicle. Two male suspects eventually entered the vehicle and sped away, before parking in the Blue Quill neighbourhood near 113 Street and 31 Avenue. The two suspects were subsequently arrested and taken into custody by TRAP and Canine Unit members.

Upon arrest, EPS members also discovered that the accused had attempted to discard a backpack that contained B&E tools over a nearby fence and a loaded, sawed-off shotgun under a nearby vehicle.

Dean Carlton, 29 (driver) and Jacob Lien, 24 are facing numerous possession of stolen property, B&E tools, weapons (bear spray), firearm charges and breach of conditions.

So far in 2021, EPS TRAP members have arrested 57 individuals and laid close to 500 charges.

Most incidents are occurring on weekdays during peak commuting times, from Monday to Friday, between 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., while citizens are preparing to travel or stopping on the way to their places of employment. Thefts of idling vehicles have also been reported to EPS involving food delivery services. Delivery drivers have left their vehicles idling and unattended, while picking up or delivering food to customers.

Two charged in carfentanil, firearms seizure

One man and one woman are facing a total of 33 charges in connection to one of the largest carfentanil seizures Edmonton has ever seen.

Over the past month, the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) became aware that the suspects were in possession of illegal firearms and were involved in drug trafficking.

On Feb. 3, 2021, EPS Tactical conducted a vehicle stop and arrested Greg Lafleur, 37. A search of the vehicle revealed carfentanil, cocaine, methamphetamine and $1980 CAD.

Samantha Whitrow, 34, was arrested later the same day at a Belle Rive area address. A search warrant executed at the residence resulted in the seizure of carfentanil, cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, and ketamine, as well as $65,000 CAD, one loaded Glock 9mm handgun with the serial number defaced, and numerous loose rounds of ammunition. Police also seized two crossbows from the residence, including a small handheld crossbow that is prohibited by Canadian law.

Total drugs seized in the investigation amounted to:

• Methamphetamine: 5586 grams, with an estimated street value of $147,517
• Carfentanil: 583 grams with an estimated street value of $102,588
• Cocaine hydrochloride: 477 grams with an estimated street value of $26,873
• MDMA: 222 grams with an estimated street value of $11,725
• Ketamine: 191 grams with an estimated street value of $9,550

 

Gregory Lafleur, 37, is facing 24 charges, including possession for the purpose of trafficking (x8), as well as a number of firearms offences and failure to comply with recognizance charges.

Samantha Whitrow, 34, is facing 9 charges, including possession for the purpose of trafficking (x5), as well as a number of firearms offences.

“Firearms investigations are often connected to the illegal drug trade, so our officers frequently deal with drug seizures, but this one was exceptional,” says Sgt. Eric Stewart, with the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit. “This is, to our knowledge, the second largest seizure the EPS has ever seen of the highly potent opioid known as carfentanil, and we’re glad we were able to seize this dangerous drug before it made it to Edmonton streets.”

Man charged with murder in disappearance of Billie Johnson

The Edmonton Police Service has arrested and charged a male in the disappearance of Billie Johnson. 

Kenneth Courtorielle, 35, was arrested on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021 in St. Albert with the assistance of RCMP. He has been charged with second degree murder in the death of Billie Johnson, 30, who was reported missing on Dec. 28, 2020. Courtorielle and Johnson were known to each other.

“Courtorielle has been a person of interest since the beginning of this investigation,” says S/Sgt Colin Leathem, EPS Homicide Section. “Following an extensive investigation, Homicide Section has compiled overwhelming evidence based on forensics, witness interviews, and information about Billie herself – including how engaged and connected to others she was, and how very out of character her disappearance was – to conclude that she is, unfortunately, deceased, and that Kenneth Courtorielle is responsible for her death.”

Homicide Section continues to search for Johnson’s body, and is asking rural landowners in the areas surrounding Edmonton to check their properties and contact police immediately at 780-423-4567 if they notice anything suspicious. EPS now recruiting for new Chief's Community Council

The Edmonton Police Service has redesigned its mechanisms for engaging and consulting with the community, and is now recruiting members for a more inclusive community forum focused on solving shared issues.

The new Chief’s Community Council replaces the previous EPS advisory council, and will guide police in addressing issues within vulnerable communities, and in implementing the recommendations from the EPS Commitment to Action initiative and other engagement efforts. 

 

The council will work hand-in-hand with various areas of the EPS and advise directly on the change and implementation of policy, procedure and operations. 

 

“Although the previous model provided a platform for communities to engage with police, their needs and demands outgrew the model, and it became clear that we needed to change,” says Yasin Cetin, EPS Community Relations Coordinator.  “This is a shift to a solutions-based model, so the new council will not only be helping us take action on issues as soon as possible, it will also be holding us accountable to our commitments.”

 

To be more inclusive of the many perspectives and voices that make up our city, the new council is looking to recruit community members who have experienced marginalization and discrimination, and are interested in informing the implementation of recommendations emerging from engagement efforts, and working collectively to solve issues affecting police and community.

 

The Chief’s Community Council will complement the advisory efforts of the recently announced EPS Nîsohkamâkewin Council, and the EPS Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) Council.

 

Cetin adds, “We are looking for talented people from diverse backgrounds who want to make a difference in the safety of their communities.  They are going to help us keep the momentum going on the many great ideas and solutions coming out of the community, not only helping us build a better police service, but building new relationships and trust as well.”

Police investigating fatal collision in southeast Edmonton

EPS Major Collision Investigations Section (MCIS) is investigating a fatal collision that occurred this morning in southeast Edmonton.

At approximately 10:55 a.m. today, Feb. 8, 2021, a single-vehicle collision occurred in the westbound lanes of 34 Avenue just east of Gateway Boulevard. A Hyundai Santa Fe being driven by a 51-year-old male lost control, drove onto the median, before striking a sign standard. 

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded to the scene and extricated the male driver from the vehicle, prior to paramedics treating and transporting him to hospital with critical injuries, where he later succumbed to his injuries. 

Speed is believed to be a factor in the collision.

ASIRT investigating after man found unresponsive in EPS holding cells

 On Friday, Feb. 5, 2021, at approximately 7:10 p.m., EPS Southeast Division officers responded to the report of a man with a firearm at a residence in the area of 60 Street and 35A Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a male matching the suspect description walking in the area. The male, who was reportedly not dressed for the weather, was stopped by officers and then detained for suspected public intoxication. A firearm matching the one reported was subsequently found in his possession, and he was taken into custody and transported to a holding cell in Southeast Division.

Several routine cell checks were conducted on the accused without incident overnight. This morning, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2020, at approximately 5:55 a.m. during a cell check to provide a meal, the 36-year-old male was found unresponsive. EMS was immediately called, and officers administered first-aid until they arrived. EMS treated him on scene, but he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has directed ASIRT to lead the investigation into this death. Therefore, the EPS will not be providing further comment.

EPS currently investigating two hate-motivated incidents

The EPS Hate Crimes and Violent Extremism Unit (HCVEU) is currently investigating two separate hate-motivated assaults against Muslim women that occurred Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 03, 2021.

The first incident occurred at approximately 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, at the University of Alberta Transit Centre. A 19-yr-old Muslim woman wearing a Hijab was waiting inside the Transit Center, when she was approached by an unknown male suspect making racial comments. The suspect allegedly became more aggressive towards the female, posturing as though he was about to assault her.

An ETS transit employee intervened prior to any assault being committed, and the suspect left the area. Investigators are currently working with U of A Security and reviewing surveillance video.

The second incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, in the area of 100 Street and 82 Avenue. A 27-year-old Muslim female wearing a Burka was walking on the sidewalk alone. An unknown male suspect ran across the road, stopping in front of the female and blocked her path. 

The suspect then allegedly began swearing and yelling insults at the female. The suspect then left crossing the street. The female thought the suspect was gone and continued walking eastbound, crossing 99 Street. The suspect returned coming up behind the female, pushing her to the ground, while making threats to kill her and tear off her Burka. The suspect then left the area. At this time, HCVEU investigators are treating the incidents as two separate events.

“These recent attacks, in addition to the December attacks at Southgate Mall, all happened in public areas and in daytime, which shows an extremely alarming trend threatening the safety of the Muslim community,” says EPS Sgt. Gary Willits, of the EPS Hate Crimes and Violent Extremism Unit. “We recognize the impact and trauma of these attacks are significant to the victims, their loved ones, and the broader community. We will be working closely with community leaders to seek solutions.”

EPS investigators shut down clan lab; seize close to $110,000 in drugs

A drug investigation that commenced in December 2020 has culminated with the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of close to $110,000 in various drugs and drug-production equipment.

On Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, EPS Special Project Team investigators executed a CDSA search warrant at a residence near 74 Street and 78 Avenue in southeast Edmonton. During the clearing of the residence, members observed what appeared to be a marijuana grow-op in the basement, along with various other substances and equipment used to produce drugs.

Further investigation at the residence uncovered volatile chemicals used in drug manufacturing, at which time members of the EPS Clandestine Lab team were called in to safely secure the scene.

Investigators seized the following items from the residence:

• 88 marijuana plants in various stages of growth – value $88,000
• 52.2 grams Methamphetamine – street value $4,520
• 6.1 grams of Fentanyl – street value $1,525
• 25.7 grams of Cocaine – street value $1,865
• 2910 ml of gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) – street value $2,910
• 213 tabs of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) – street value $1,065
• 1284.8 grams of marijuana – street value $9,130

Total value of drugs seized - $109,015

Various weapons were also seized from the scene including:

• Akkar 12-gauge shotgun, loaded with 5 rounds and ready to fire
• Replica firearm (airsoft)
• Conducted energy weapon (CEW)
• Brass knuckles
• Various knives and clubs
  
  

Bryan Moyles, 36, and Carleen Schwentke, 20, are facing multiple drug trafficking and production charges and various firearm-related offences.

“We want citizens to be observant of their surroundings,” explained Sgt. Guy Pilon, of the EPS Clan Lab Unit. “Keep an eye on your neighbourhood and nearby properties. We should all be looking out for one another, because criminals certainly won’t.”

Signs of a clandestine drug lab can include:

• Odd chemical odours
• The presence of unusual amounts of solvents (such as camping fuel), acetone, or oxidizers (such as highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide)
• Batteries that have been opened up
• Red or purple stains on surfaces

Pilon also noted, landlords and property managers should also be diligent about doing background checks on new tenants, and be wary of suspicious behavior, such as a renter wanting to pay rent in cash for many months in advance, or a payee who is different than the renter.

ASIRT investigating after man found unresponsive while in EPS custody

On Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021 at approximately 11:35 p.m., EPS Northwest Division patrol officers responded to a disturbance call at a commercial property near 117 Street and Kingsway Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a 38-year-old male suspect had already left the property. Officers responded to a second call at the same location at approximately 4:40 a.m., Sunday Jan. 31, 2021. It was reported to police that the male suspect had returned and was again causing a disturbance.

Upon arrival, Northwest Division patrol members located and arrested the male suspect. The suspect cooperated with police, who was then handcuffed and placed in the rear of the patrol wagon. The suspect was transported to the Detainee Management Unit (DMU) at EPS Headquarters. Upon arrival in the EPS underground garage outside of DMU, members opened the rear door of the patrol wagon, where they found the suspect unresponsive and not breathing.

A paramedic within the DMU was immediately notified and commenced life-saving measures on the suspect until EMS personnel arrived. Paramedics were able to establish a pulse with the male while transporting him to hospital, where he remains in critical condition today, Monday, Feb. 1, 2021. 

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has directed ASIRT to lead the investigation into this incident. As such, the EPS will not be providing further comment.

Homicide investigators charge 47-year-old man in connection to death of male last weekend

Homicide Section investigators have arrested and charged a 47-year-old Edmonton man in connection to the murder of Terry Allen Maksymyszyn, 53, last weekend.

Mark Robie Wheeler, 47, of Edmonton, was taken into custody and charged with second degree murder yesterday, Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021.

The Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on the body of Terry Allen Maksymyszyn, 53 earlier this week. Cause and manner of death, however, are still not being released at this time. 

Background:

At approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, Northwest Division patrol members responded to a trouble unknown call at a residence near 128 Avenue and 129 Street.

Upon arrival, members found Maksymyszyn unconscious inside the residence. Members commenced CPR measures on the male until EMS arrived, after which time he was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics.

At approximately 4:20 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, the male succumbed to his injuries. The Edmonton Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday morning.

EPS and EFRS plungers met up for buckets full of laughs and goosebumps on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

“It’s all about supporting our community and our partners. This has been a challenging past year and I’m glad to see that fundraising efforts for important causes that give back to the community are continuing,” says Edmonton Fire Chief Joe Zatylny.

There’s still time to join the Plunge! Here’s how:

1. Register online as a virtual plunger.
2. Registration is $50 to participate, but it includes your $25 registration fee and a $25 a tax-receipted donation (automatically sent via email to all new registrants). It also gets you a $5 Tim Horton’s gift card and a super cute Polar Plunge mask – that will certainly come in handy!
3. Start your fundraising! The more you raise, the more incentives you can receive.
4. Get creative on January 31^st! Use the Halloween costume you didn’t get to use and plunge into a cold bath, a hot bath, a shower, a snow pile, or dive into your pajamas, a warm blanket, a tub of ice cream, a pot of chili… let your imagination run wild. Whatever you choose to do, you’ve done it for an amazing cause. And bring in the whole family (as long as you are following Public Health Orders) to make it the best plunge yet!
5. Don’t forget to upload your photos and/or videos of your big at-home plunge to your fundraising page. If you share it on your social media, be sure to tag @SpecialOAlberta.

Police seek public tips in historical missing person investigation

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a man who has not been seen for seven years.

Camrose Police Service began an investigation into a missing male, Nowell Halfe, 52, in August 2019. The preliminary investigation revealed that he was known to have been in Edmonton, and the file was transferred to the EPS in June 2020. Through an extensive investigation, the EPS Missing Persons Unit has been able to confirm that the last known contact anyone had with Halfe was in January of 2014 in Edmonton.

Halfe has brown hair, hazel eyes, stands 5’10” tall and weighs approximately 160 lbs. He typically has facial hair.

Due to the extensive time lapse since he was last seen, investigators and family are concerned for Halfe’s well-being, and hoping the public may have information that will help progress this investigation. At this time, it is unknown whether foul play is involved in his disappearance.

Police seek assistance identifying male in Dec. 8 homicide investigation

Homicide investigators are looking for tips about the identity of a male observed near the scene of a Dec. 8 homicide. 

The male was observed on security footage to have been in the area of 109 Avenue between 106 and 109 Street, between 2:30 and 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020.

The male is not a suspect at this time. Police are looking to identify him so they can speak with him, as he was in the area at the time of the homicide and may have information that could assist investigators.

  

The male in question may be associated to a black SUV that was in the area at the same time.

Background

At approximately 3 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2020, Downtown Division officers responded to a weapons complaint in the area of 109 Street and 109 Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a male lying injured in the street. Paramedics responded to the scene, but the man was pronounced deceased.

An autopsy completed on Dec. 9, 2020 determined that Mahad Bashir Farah, 25, died as a result of a gunshot wound and confirmed his death a homicide.

Driver facing TSA charge in connection to Jan. 4th cyclist fatality

A 62-year-old male is facing a charge under the Traffic Safety Act, in connection to the death of a 64-year-old cyclist back on Jan 4, 2021.

At approximately 3 p.m., Jan. 4, 2021, a collision occurred at the intersection of 50 Street and 94B Avenue. An east bound flat deck picker truck and trailer, driven by the 62-year-old male, was turning south on 50 Street from 94B Avenue when it struck a cyclist.

The 64-year-old male cyclist sustained fatal injuries on scene. Speed was not considered a factor.

The driver of the 2014 Western Star flat deck picker truck is charged with failure to proceed safely after stopping at an intersection under the TSA.

Autopsy completed into death of 53-year-old male over the weekend

An autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiner was completed yesterday, Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021, into the suspicious death of a 53-year-old male last Sunday.

The Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy yesterday on the body of Terry Allen Maksymyszyn, 53. Cause and manner of death are not being released at this time for investigative purposes.

Background:

At approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, Northwest Division patrol members responded to a trouble unknown call at a residence near 128 Avenue and 129 Street.

Upon arrival, members found an unconscious male inside the residence. Members commenced CPR measures on the male until EMS arrived, after which time he was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics.

At approximately 4:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, the male succumbed to his injuries.
