ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting

On Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Southeast Division officers responded to a residence in the area of 47 Street and 101A Avenue on the report of an assault. It was reported a 28-year-old female had been assaulted inside the residence over several days by a 26-year-old male who was known to the female.

Officers attended the residence at approximately 2:30 p.m. and confirmed injuries on a 28-year-old female. As the whereabouts of the 26-year-old male were unknown at the time, officers requested five warrants for the arrest of the male suspect including, assault causing bodily harm (x2), unlawful confinement, intimidation and uttering threats.

Later in the evening, at approximately 9:02 p.m., police received information that the male suspect had returned to the residence and conducted a break and enter. With the assistance of the EPS Canine Unit, officers contained the dwelling due to the emergent circumstances. A short time later, the male suspect exited the residence and a confrontation occurred between officers and the 26-year-old. Officers subsequently discharged their service weapons and struck the male. Officers administered first-aid until EMS arrived. The male was pronounced deceased on scene.

No EPS officers were injured in this incident.

The EPS will not be providing further comment as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has since taken the lead of this investigation.

Autopsy results confirm female was shot

The Edmonton Medical Examiner released autopsy results today, in connection with the death of a female in west Edmonton last week.

Autopsy results confirm that the 49-year-old female died as a result of a gunshot wound and the manner of death is homicide.

Background
At approximately 8:50 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, West Division officers responded to the report of an assault with a weapon at a residence in the area of 214 Street and Breckenridge Drive.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 49- year-old female. EMS responded, but the woman succumbed to her injuries on scene.

A 53-year-old male linked to the incident turned himself in to police at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018. Officers are not looking for any additional suspects.

The male and female were known to one another and this was a domestic violence incident.

Wen Zhou Zhang, 53, was subsequently charged with second degree murder and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.

Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased in this investigation for the following reasons: it does not serve an investigative purpose and the EPS has a duty to protect the privacy rights of the victims and their families.

Public information and warning: Violent offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Hubert Willie Cardinal, 77, is a convicted violent and sexually violent offender and the Edmonton Police Service has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another violent offence against someone, including children, while in the community. Due to his release the Edmonton Police Service has a duty to warn the public of the risk Cardinal poses.

Cardinal was recently released from the Calgary Correctional Centre and is residing in the Edmonton area. The Edmonton Police Service is seeking a recognizance order on Cardinal and he will be monitored by the Behavioural Assessment Unit of the Edmonton Police Service.

Cardinal has a history of sexually assaulting known and vulnerable adult females and female children, including family members. Cardinal’s risk for violence and sexual violence increases with the consumption of drugs and alcohol.

The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community.

Police charge man with second degree murder

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 53-year-old man in relation to the death of a woman in west Edmonton last week.

Wen Zhou Zhang, 53, has been charged with second degree murder and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.

 

An autopsy to confirm cause of death has been scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019; however, homicide detectives have deemed the manner of death to be homicide.

 

This is Edmonton’s 28^th homicide of 2018.

Police investigating fatal single-vehicle collision

The EPS Traffic Section is investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred yesterday evening.

At approximately 9 p.m. yesterday, Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, Southeast Division officers responded to the report of a single-vehicle collision in the area of Anthony Henday Drive and 91 Street. It was reported to police that a blue 2014 Hyundai Accent was travelling westbound on Anthony Henday Drive when the vehicle drifted off of the roadway and collided with the center cement bridge pillar at the 91 Street overpass.

 

Edmonton Fire Rescue and EMS responded; however, the 26-year-old female driver succumbed to her injuries at the scene. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

 

The EPS Major Collision Investigations Section continues to investigate.

Police seek public's assistance locating violent offender

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 28-year-old Paul Egotak, who is wanted for breach of recognizance x2.

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 22-year-old Jared Owen Soosay who is wanted for assault with weapon, assault and breach of recognizance.

Soosay is described as 5’8”, 140 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes.

 

The Edmonton Police Service considers Soosay to be of high risk to offend violently; he has been known to carry weapons. If seen, he should not be approached. Members of the public who have information regarding Soosay’s whereabouts are asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service.
