Police seek assistance identifying suspect in random aggravated assault

The Edmonton Police Service is releasing a composite sketch to help identify a suspect in an alleged aggravated assault that occurred in August. 

On Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at approximately 11:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a 47-year-old male who was seriously injured in an assault that occurred inside a grocery store in the area of 118 Avenue and 66 Street. 

 

It was reported that an Indigenous male in his 30s and the complainant first interacted while riding the #8 bus at approximately 10:30 a.m., when the suspect repeatedly asked the complainant for cigarettes, despite being asked to leave the complainant alone. 

 

The suspect then allegedly followed the complainant off the bus into a store in the area of 118 Avenue and 66 Street, where the suspect struck the complainant in the face, then fled the scene. The complainant suffered serious injuries to his face.

The suspect is described as an Indigenous male with short black hair, brown eyes, approximately 5’10” tall with a slim build. He is believed to be in his 30s and was reportedly wearing a white t-shirt and gray pants.

Police lay charge in fatal pedestrian collision

The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section has charged a 73-year-old male driver in relation to a fatal pedestrian collision that took place last week.

On Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, William Nahayowski, 73, was issued an appearance notice for careless driving and is expected to appear in court on Nov. 21, 2018.

Background

At approximately 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, Northeast Division Patrol officers were called to the area of 66 Street and 137 Avenue on the report of a collision. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive female who had been struck by a Dodge Ram. The woman was treated by EMS, but succumbed to her injuries on scene.

Investigators believe the driver of the Dodge Ram, a 73-year-old male, was exiting a gas station on the west side of the 66 Street and 137 Avenue intersection, in an attempt to turn southbound on 66 Street, when he allegedly struck the female pedestrian walking northbound on the sidewalk. Police believe the driver was looking north, while in the process of merging into southbound traffic when the woman was struck.

Speed and impairment are not considered factors in this collision.

EDGE Section arrests seven, lays 36 charges

The Edmonton Drug and Gang (EDGE) Section has laid 36 charges in relation to a drug trafficking ring.

In August of 2018, EDGE Section concluded a seven-month investigation into a group of people suspected of trafficking drugs between Edmonton, Calgary and British Columbia. On August 2, 2018, EDGE members executed search warrants at two addresses in the Griesbach and Hollick-Kenyon areas.   

 

Various drugs were seized during the execution of the search warrants, including 394 grams of purple-coloured fentanyl with an estimated street value of $98,000. 

 

“Drug dealers have been known to use various dyes and buffing agents to create different coloured drugs to appeal to consumers,” says Staff Sgt. Pierre Blais, with EPS EDGE Section. “When you use street drugs, you never know what’s in them or how potent they are, and this can lead to serious harm or death.”

Jasdeep Uthwani, 18 is charged with ten charges:

Ethan Kupsch, 20, is charged with six charges:

• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x2)
• Possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000 (x2)

Jordan Hope, 28, is charged with six charges:
• Traffic controlled substance 
• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x3)
• Possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000 
• Possession of a controlled substance

Morlene Junger, 20, is charged with five charges:
• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x3)
• Possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000 
• Possession of a controlled substance

Jasmit Badesha, 19, is charged with four charges:
• Traffic controlled substance 
• Possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000 (x2)
• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking

David Dominic, 31, is charged with three charges:
• Traffic controlled substance (x2)
• Possession of stolen property under $5,000

Anthony Watson, 28, is charged with two charges:
• Traffic controlled substance 
• Possession of stolen property under $5,000

Total drugs seized from the warrants:
• 394 grams of fentanyl with an estimated street value of $98,000 
• 146 grams of cocaine base with an estimated street value of $5,000
• 0.5 gram of methamphetamines with an estimated street value of $50
• 1.4 grams of marijuana
• 56 grams of phenacetin (buffing agent)
• Two functional digital scales

Total cash seized from the warrants:

Charges laid in assault on ETS driver

The Edmonton Police Service has laid charges against a youth following a serious assault on an ETS driver yesterday morning.

A 15-year-old male is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public and theft of a motor vehicle in relation to this incident.

 

The youth cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

 

No further information is available for release.

 

Background

 

At approximately 3:40 a.m. yesterday, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, Southeast Division patrol officers responded to the Mill Woods Transit Centre on Hewes Way on the report of an assault.

 

Upon arrival, officers located a 65-year-old male ETS bus driver who had sustained multiple injuries. The driver was treated and transported to hospital by EMS, where his injuries are described as serious, but non-life-threatening.

 

Police arrested a 15-year-old male on scene.

Public information and warning: Violent offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Michael Rhoads is a convicted violent and sexual offender, and the Edmonton Police Service has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another violent offence against someone while in the community.

Rhoads will be residing in the Edmonton area.  The Edmonton Police Service is seeking a recognizance order on Rhoads and he will be monitored by the Behavioural Assessment Unit of the Edmonton Police Service.

 

Rhoads has a history of violence towards intimate partners and strangers he has encountered on the street or in bars.  His risk for violence increases significantly when under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

 

Rhoads has been placed on a series of court ordered conditions, including:

 

• Must abide by a curfew of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily
• Must not purchase, possess or consume any alcohol or illicit drugs, including cannabis, any prescription drugs not prescribed to him, or any other intoxicating substances.
• Must not be in any licensed premises other than a dining room for the sole purpose of having a meal. Must not attend any liquor store.
• Must not possess any drug paraphernalia such as crack or marijuana pipes, self-made pipes of any kind, e cigarettes, bongs, water pipes, cigarette papers, or syringes.
• Must not travel out of the City of Edmonton without written approval.
• Must not be in possession of weapons of any kind, including knives (except in his residence or at a restaurant for the sole purpose of consuming a meal), bear spray or dog spray, firearms, ammunition, explosive material, or any weapons, whether homemade or otherwise.
• Must not enter into a dating, intimate, or sexual relationship with any person or any friendships with females until her identity has been disclosed to a supervisor or designate and she has been informed of his previous offending.

At approximately 3:40 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, Southeast Division patrol officers responded to the Mill Woods Transit Centre on Hewes Way on the report of an assault.

EDGE Section arrests four, lays 23 charges

The Edmonton Drug and Gang (EDGE) Section has laid 23 charges after a months-long drug trafficking investigation.

In March of 2018, EDGE Section initiated an investigation into suspected drug trafficking activities of an Edmonton man. Throughout the investigation, three other suspects and four addresses were also identified as being part of the operation. On September 20, EDGE members concluded the investigation and executed search warrants at two addresses in Windermere, one address in MacEwan, one address in the Davies Industrial area and one vehicle.

 

Various drugs were seized during the execution of the search warrants, including 3,783 pills believed to be an analog of fentanyl disguised as Xanax pills.

 

“Police continue to find fentanyl and its analogs in various forms, including illicit pills designed to look like prescription medication,” says Staff Sgt. Pierre Blais, with EPS EDGE Section. “People who use street drugs must understand that they may not be ingesting what they think they are, which could lead to serious harm or even death.”

Gezelle Mendoza, 26, Chiiming Diep, 24, and Vernon Schwehr, 27, are all charged with:

• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x3)

• Simple possession of a controlled substance (x2)

• Possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000
