Police investigate afternoon shooting in city’s northeast

Today (Feb. 29, 2016) at approximately 2 p.m., police responded to a call in the area of 133 Avenue and 25 Street on the report of a break-in and assault with a weapon. It was reported that a male had been shot inside a residence and a suspect vehicle was witnessed leaving the scene.

As a result of a city-wide broadcast, the vehicle was later located at a residence in the area of 85 Street and 136 Avenue, where multiple people were taken into custody for questioning in relation to this incident. No charges have been laid at this time.

The victim, a 31-year-old-male, remains in hospital in very serious, life-threatening condition.

The investigation is ongoing and no other information is available at this time.

Police look for witnesses after morning collision and altercation with firearms

The Edmonton Police Service is asking the public to come forward if they witnessed any suspicious activity or witnesses a two-vehicle collision around 8:30 a.m. today, Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016 in the area of 159 Street and 103 Avenue.

It was reported that a black Honda Civic and a black Chrysler 300 were involved in a collision. Shortly after, unknown occupants were allegedly involved in an altercation that involved an exchange of gun fire. 

Upon police arrival, both vehicles were vacated and no one involved in the incident remained on scene.

Over 70 bus shelters damaged in mischief spree in northeast Edmonton over the weekend

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a spree of mischiefs that occurred from Thursday, Feb. 18 to Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016 in northeast Edmonton, which left 71 bus shelters with broken glass as well as 15 houses and cars with broken windows.

On Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, the EPS received reports of four vehicles and one house with broken glass in the Evansdale, Casselman and McLeod neighbourhoods. Seven vehicles and two homes were damaged on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 in the neighbourhoods of Abbottsfield, Casselman, Hairsine, McConachie and McLeod.  Another vehicle in Kilkenny was also damaged on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016.

A total of 80 bus shelter window panes were destroyed. Northeast Division received reports of 63 vandalized bus shelters, four in Southwest Division, two in Southeast Division and one in West Division. The following are some of the areas where the bus shelters were vandalized in Northeast Division: Abbottsfield Transit Shelter, Abbottsfield Road, Belvedere Transit Centre, 50 Street, Victoria Trail, 139 Avenue, 127 Avenue, Hermitage Road, 118 Avenue, Manning Drive, 82 Street, and 144 Avenue.

“This early into the investigation, we can’t rule out whether or not the houses and vehicles with broken windows are connected to the mischief to bus shelters,” says Det. Rick Dahl with Northeast Division Criminal Investigation Section. “This mischief spree has negatively affected a lot of innocent citizens and transit riders.”

All of the damage in these incidents is believed to have occurred overnight. Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying suspects that are responsible for this senseless crime.

The preliminarily estimate to clean-up debris and install new window panes at the vandalized bus shelters is approximately $30,000.

On Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, Northeast Division officers received reports of six additional shelters that were vandalized just after midnight. The suspects are believed to be driving a Red Dodge Caravan. The shelters damaged were westbound along 118 Avenue and Abbottsfiled Road, 33 Street, 43 Street, 50 Street, 51 Street, and 53 Street.

Three other bus shelters were damaged earlier today at 144 Avenue and 54 Street to 58 Street.

Police investigate fatal collision at Groat Road and 111 Avenue

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a fatal collision that occurred early this morning, Thursday, Feb. 26, 2016 at the intersection of Groat Road and 111 Avenue.

At approximately 8:20 a.m., West Division officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. It was reported that a woman was walking southbound on the east side of Groat Road, across 111 Avenue, when she was struck in a marked crosswalk. The male driver of a Ford pickup was travelling southbound on Groat Road, before turning east on 111 Avenue, when the vehicle struck the woman. The 81-year-old female pedestrian succumbed to her injuries en route to hospital.

Alcohol or speed is not believed to be factors in this collision and charges have not been laid at this time.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit continues to investigate.

This is Edmonton’s fourth traffic fatality of 2016.

2014 RABBIT HILL ROAD PEDESTRIAN FATALITY

A 22-year-old Edmonton man is facing charges in connection with the 2014 hit-and-run death of a pedestrian in southwest Edmonton.

It is alleged the vehicle Sahil Arora was driving struck and killed a 46-year-old man on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, on Rabbit Hill Road. It is believed the male pedestrian was walking from the southeast corner to the southwest corner in a marked crosswalk at Hodgson Boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle.

The investigation culminated with the arrest of Arora last week, thanks in part to an observant member of the public and some persistent police work undertaken by investigators.

“We were able to identify the vehicle thanks to a tip from the public, eventually locating the accused overseas, and he agree to return to Canada to face the charges,” explained Sgt. Brad Harsch, who has been investigating the pedestrian fatality over the last 16 months.

“The deceased’s family has been living this nightmare for the last year and half. Hopefully, in some small way, this will bring a level of closure for his wife and two children,” said Harsch.

Arora is charged with hit and run causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

A 46-year-old man died following injuries sustained during an Oct. 5^th hit-and-run collision on Rabbit Hill Road in Southwest Edmonton.

The male was struck by a vehicle travelling northbound on Rabbit Hill Road at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, while walking from the southeast corner to the southwest corner in a marked crosswalk at Hodgson Boulevard.

The complainant, a father of two young children, remained in hospital in critical condition until Thursday evening, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Autopsy results confirm latest death is a homicide

The Medical Examiner has confirmed that William John Patterson, 37, died from gun-shot wounds with the manner of death being homicide.

Homicide Section detectives continue to investigate.

Southwest Division patrol members responded to a weapons complaint call at approximately 4:55 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016, near Chappelle Drive and Claxton. A male was taken to hospital with gun-shot wounds, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Quick-thinking Samaritan aides officer in midst of assault

Last week a brave, young stranger did what many bystanders wouldn’t.

Const. Sasa Novakovic, with the Edmonton Police Service Northwest Traffic Unit, was working last Wednesday (Feb. 17, 2016) when he observed a male and female jaywalking across four-lanes of rush-hour traffic. Concerned for their safety, in the busy area of 111 Avenue and 95A Street, Const. Novakovic asked the individuals to return back to the side of the street they had crossed from.

When Const. Novakovic was able to approach the individuals and ask for their names, the male suspect, Gabriel Dumont, refused to comply with the officer’s request and was advised he would be arrested for obstruction. As Dumont continued to be uncooperative, Const. Novakovic attempted to arrest him, but was instead assaulted while Dumont’s female acquaintance fled the scene.

During the assault, a Good Samaritan named Eugene DeRose was driving by and witnessed the attack. He immediately stopped his vehicle in the middle of the road and ran over to pull Dumont off of Const. Novakovic, who was on the ground. Luckily, DeRose was able to hold Dumont down until the constable got back on his feet and made the arrest.

“I acted on pure adrenaline,” says DeRose. “I saw what was taking place… and without even thinking, I knew I had to jump in to prevent things from getting worse. I’m just glad I was able to help.”

Gabriel William Dumont, 27, has since been charged with obstructing a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer and was issued a ticket for jaywalking ($250). Dumont is expected to make his next court appearance on March 4, 2016.

“As a police officer, you never expect an innocent bystander to take the law into their own hands,” says Const. Novakovic. “In this particular case, my family and I will be forever grateful for Eugene’s courageous act. He deserves to be commended. This truly attests to the relationship and mutual respect the Edmonton Police Service has with the community.” 

Const. Novakovic is nominating DeRose for a Citizen Award through the Edmonton Police Commission in hopes of further recognizing him.

The Edmonton Police Commission Citizen Award acknowledges citizens who have demonstrated exemplary bravery by intervening in a crime in progress, assisting EPS in apprehending an offender or coming to the aid of a victim, and in doing so have prevented injury, trauma or death. Their meritorious actions have assisted the police in making our community a safer place to live, work and visit.
