Detectives lay charges in June homicide

Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, July 30, 2014), Justin Mark Nanaquawetung, 26, turned himself into homicide investigators at Police Headquarters.

He was arrested and charged with manslaughter in the June 22, 2014 death of Michael Bradley Laronde, 33 of Saskatchewan.

Laronde died from blunt force trauma to the head after an altercation outside a pub in the area of 91 Street and 83 Avenue.

The accused appeared before a Justice of the Peace last night (July 30) and was released on bail.

In the summer of 1996, then-Constable Eddy McIsaac was in the middle of responding to an incident when he heard a nearby woman screaming for help.

A two-year-old girl was choking and gasping for air. Constable McIsaac rushed over, applied CPR and saved the little girl’s life.

Nearly two decades later, the now-20-year-old woman and her family have reunited with Inspector McIsaac.

Suspect turns himself in to police for homicide

A man turned himself into police today in relation to a homicide that occurred earlier this month.

Aaron Mullins, 28, turned himself into homicide detectives today, Monday, July 28, 2014 at Edmonton Police Headquarters and was charged with manslaughter and possession of a weapon.

An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 by the Edmonton Medical Examiner; however the cause of death of Kerry McGill, 41, is pending toxicology results.

Background:

EPS officers responded just before 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2014, to a report of a deceased male in a residence in the area of 105 Street and 99 Avenue.

Woman charged after leaving children alone in vehicle

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a woman for allegedly leaving her children unattended in a vehicle, as temperatures rose to 25 C on Thursday afternoon.

Southeast Division officers responded to a South Edmonton Common grocery store parking lot in the area of 97 Street and 23 Avenue at approximately 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2014, after it was reported that two young children had allegedly been left alone in a vehicle for 15 to 20 minutes.

The children’s mother returned to the vehicle as officers arrived on scene and discovered a four-year-old girl and eight-year-old boy left alone in a SUV.

“Although the vehicle was not running and the keys were not left inside, the bottom line is a vehicle is not a babysitter,” says Staff Sergeant Warren Driechel with Southeast Division. “Regardless of the weather, it is never safe to leave children unattended in a vehicle. They can suffer medical distress or become victims of crime. Make sure kids are always properly supervised and plan outings accordingly.”

The children did not require medical attention. The 39-year-old mother was charged with one count of cause a child to be in need of intervention under Section 130 of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.

Three males facing multiple drug charges for targeting youth with “free samples” in Old Strathcona

Three males are facing multiple drug-related offences for allegedly providing free drug samples to youth in the Strathcona corridor on Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday July 18, 2014. The three suspects are alleged to have canvassed and offered youth free drug samples of base cocaine in packages that included the accused’s contact information for potential future purchases. The alleged curb-side transactions were made from the window of a white Dodge Ram pick-up truck, while the accused were parked in Old Strathcona near 103 Street and 83 Avenue.



Charged with trafficking, possession for the purpose and living of the proceeds of crime are Jesse Levesque, 22, and Chris Hefford of Edmonton, 22, and Dan Friedrick, 25, of Spruce Grove.



Members from the EPS Old Scona Beats and Drug Undercover Street Team (DUST) partnered on the two-day initiative, July 17 and 18, 2014, which primarily focused its resources on identifying drug traffickers targeting youth in the area.

Police have located the missing 4 year old girl. Savanna was found unharmed, in the area of 95 Street and 107 Avenue, with a friend. Thank you to everyone for their assistance.

Weapons complaint results in injury to man

Charges have been laid in a weapons complaint in the west-end that resulted in a man being to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

On Monday, July 14, 2014 at approximately 11:30 a.m. a man attended a property management company in the area of 155 Street and Stony Plain Road to lodge a complaint about his rental suite.

It is reported that the man’s behaviour escalated and he was asked to calm down and leave the premises. A female employee and male employee escorted the man out of the building, and employees locked down the office.

Shortly thereafter, the accused returned to the business where he allegedly smashed a window with a weapon to gain entry into the building, where the male employee was working. The accused allegedly attacked the employee in the neck with a knife. When police arrived, the employee safely escaped the building where he received medical assistance and was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

West Division officers and Tactical Unit arrived on-scene and contained the area. Police arrested the accused without further incident. He was also taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Allan Schaffer Andkilde, 62, has been charged with attempted murder, break and enter to commit, possession of a weapon, uttering threats, and mischief under $5,000.
