Police seek public's assistance locating missing man

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s help locating a missing 47-year-old man.

Jose Serafin Samaco, 47, was last seen leaving his place of employment at West Edmonton Mall on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, at approximately 6 p.m. and investigators believe he may have returned to his residence in the area of 108 Street and Jasper Avenue before going missing. Samaco was reported missing by a friend on Sunday, Feb. 3.

 

Samaco is described as a 5’6” tall Asian male weighing approximately 165 lbs. He has brown eyes, black hair and was last seen wearing a grey winter jacket and black pants.

 

Along with a photo of Samaco (below), detectives have also included a photo of him riding a downtown bound ETS bus on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019.

Samaco’s disappearance is considered to be out of character, and as a result, there are concerns for his well-being. There are, however, no indications of foul play at this time.

Police seek assistance in locating suspect sought on warrant for attempted murder; four others charged

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 28-year-old Hanad Mohamed Farah in relation to a shooting late last year.

On Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018 at approximately 1:35 a.m., police were called to an establishment in the area of Jasper Avenue and 100 Street on the report of a weapons complaint. Upon arrival, officers located a 31-year-old man who had been shot. The man was treated and transported to hospital by EMS with life-threatening injuries.

Hanad Mohamed Farah, 28, is wanted by police on outstanding warrants for attempted murder and other firearm-related offences in connection to the shooting. Investigators believe Farah to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

Farah is described as a black male who stands 5’11" tall and weighs approximately 150 lbs. He has brown eyes and thinning black hair.

Police have since laid charges against the following four individuals in relation to this incident. All accused are known to one another.

Daoud Ali Youssouf, 23, is charged with assault, mischief and possession for the purpose of trafficking (x3).

Jordan Cyris Crook Lombe, 23, is charged with possession of controlled substance (x2) and breach of recognizance.

Mahad Bashir Farah, 23, is charged with assault.

Osman Mohamed, 23, is charged with assault and possession for the purpose of trafficking (x3).

Homicide investigators release surveillance images of suspect vehicle involved in Jan. 21st homicide

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section is releasing surveillance images today, of a possible suspect vehicle in connection to the city’s latest homicide in The Orchards at Ellerslie.

Manvir Singh Sidhu, 23, was shot to death outside of a residence on Crabapple Crescent in The Orchards at Ellerslie, at approximately 7:35 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.

Detectives believe the suspect vehicle seen below is a dark colored 2010-2012 model Jeep Liberty.

 

Investigators are urging anyone who may information regarding the whereabouts of this suspect vehicle and/or the suspect(s) involved in this homicide to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Assist to locate: Police release images of alleged fraud suspect

The Edmonton Police Service is releasing surveillance images of a male wanted in connection to a significant credit card fraud in early 2018.

The male suspect (see images below) is believed to have rung up more than $17,000 in fraudulent credit/debit card purchases, after allegedly stealing the card during a residential break and enter in southeast Calgary sometime in early 2018.

 

The suspect is alleged to have made hundreds of purchases on a Visa debit card in January 2018 at 41 locations in Calgary, Red Deer, St. Albert and Edmonton. The card was used at numerous businesses, some of which included liquor and clothing apparel stores.

Operation Cold Start raises awareness about theft of autos left idling

Auto theft is heating up across the city, as motorists attempt to combat the cold by preheating their vehicles during the current cold snap that has descended on Edmonton.

The Edmonton Police Service is reminding the public not to leave vehicles idling, unlocked or with keys inside, thus becoming easy targets for criminals. More than 50 vehicles were reported stolen last weekend, one-third of which were left idling, unlocked and with the keys inside.

“Extreme temperatures ranging from very hot to extreme cold often trigger a rash of stolen auto complaints in our city,” says Sgt. Ian Smith, of EPS West Division. “We want to remind citizens to be vigilant, and despite the allure of getting into a warm vehicle, please don’t leave it running and unlocked or with keys inside, while you’re in the house or shopping.

“This story never ends well,” Smith says. “It’s absolutely a crime of opportunity, and one that can be avoided by not leaving your vehicle running, unlocked and unattended. The last thing you and your family want to deal with during extreme winter weather is car shopping.”

The EPS Operation Cold Start program (see video below) is attempting to change citizens’ habits with respect to leaving their idling vehicles unattended, unlocked and with keys inside. Members will conduct proactive patrols scouring various neighbourhoods for vehicles left idling and unlocked, especially during the early-morning hours, as citizens prepare for the morning commute.

Officers then approach the residence with the goal of engaging and educating the owner of the vehicle in a discussion regarding the crime of auto theft.

In 2018, more than 4,300 vehicles were stolen in Edmonton.

Police lay charges in 2018 fatal collision

The EPS Traffic Section has laid charges against a 23-year-old man in relation to a fatal collision which took place late last year.

Jamie Greene, 23, is charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident and careless driving.

This was Edmonton’s 20th traffic fatality of 2018.

The accused is expected to appear in court on March 5, 2019.

No further information is being released.

Background

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, police were dispatched to 127 Street and 127 Avenue on the report of a hit-and-run collision. Upon investigation, it was determined a 38-year-old female had been walking south along the east sidewalk between 128 and 127 Avenue. It is believed she then travelled across 127 Street, when a black Toyota Corolla struck her. The Toyota Corolla remained on scene.

While the pedestrian remained injured on the road a second vehicle, a sedan, also struck the pedestrian but did not remain at the scene. The woman succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

New EPS Chief to be sworn in today, Friday afternoon

Dale McFee will officially be sworn in as city’s 23rd Chief of Police with the Edmonton Police Service during an afternoon ceremony at City Hall today, Friday, Feb. 1, 2019.

“I have spent the last few months getting to know many of the EPS members both civilian and sworn, and I am extremely humbled, honoured and excited to be given an opportunity to lead this organization,” said incoming Police Chief Dale McFee.

 

“I have also had the opportunity to meet many community leaders and stakeholders throughout the city. I’m looking forward to creating meaningful partnerships over the coming months and years, with the goal of collaboratively making Edmonton a safer city for all.”

The swearing-in and change of command ceremonies will commence at 1:30 p.m. sharp this afternoon, on the main floor of City Hall. Edmonton Police Service Insp. Shawna Grimes will be the Master of Ceremonies, which will include remarks from Tim O’Brien, Chair of the Edmonton Police Commission, Don Iveson, Edmonton Mayor, Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General and new EPS Chief Dale McFee.

The ceremonies will also include a prayer from indigenous Elder Betty Letendre, a presentation by Tribal Chief Mark Arcand and a drum circle performed by the Ben Calfe Robe School Drummers.

 
Incoming Chief McFee, 53, has an extensive background in policing , including 26 years as a police officer in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan (nine years as Chief of Police) and six years as the Deputy Minister of Corrections and Policing in the Ministry of Justice for the Saskatchewan government.

From 2011 to 2014 he served as President and Past President of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. He has previously held the positions of President of the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, President of the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers, and Director of the Canadian Police Association.

Incoming Chief Dale McFee will formally assume the role of Edmonton Police Chief taking over from Interim Chief Kevin Brezinski, who was the police service’s interim commander during the transition from former Police Chief Rod Knecht.
