Homicide Section investigating suspicious death

At approximately 8:15 p.m. yesterday evening, Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, Northeast Division officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the area of 77 Street and 166 Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers found Enzo Campoli, 52, injured and lying on the sidewalk in front of a house. Mr. Campoli was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS.

Investigators are releasing the victim’s name for investigative purposes – in hopes of generating tips and information that could help in solving the crime.

An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow morning, Friday, Jan. 11, 2019. 

Detectives continue to investigate and no further information is available for release.

Assist to locate: Phillip Trout wanted on multiple warrants

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Phillip Trout, 33, wanted on multiple warrants including assault with a weapon.

Investigators have issued 10 warrants for Trout’s arrest, in connection to a bear spray incident involving a female complainant back on June 15, 2017.

Trout (see photo included below) is also wanted with respect to several residential break and enters reported throughout northwest Edmonton, dating back to August, when he is alleged to have broken into a home near 121 Street and 135 Avenue.

Police charge second man in $250,000 vehicle part fraud

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a second man for defrauding several Edmonton businesses.

Between November 2017 and April 2018, police received more than 10 reports of fraud from Edmonton businesses that sold vehicle parts and electrical goods.

 

Following a thorough investigation, detectives determined that two male suspects used stolen credit card information to purchase more than $250,000 worth of goods from the businesses.

 

On Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, Peter Philip Cardinal, 60, was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000(x5), fraud under $5,000 (x2), uttering a forged document and an unrelated outstanding criminal warrant.

 

In a news release issued on Sept. 19, 2018, investigators noted that they were still actively working to locate the second suspect.

 

On Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, investigators charged Richard Joseph Zukowksi, 42, with fraud over $5,000 (x5), fraud under $5,000 (x2) and uttering a forged document.  Zukowksi was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019.

Autopsy complete and charges laid in most recent homicide

The EPS Homicide Section has laid charges in Edmonton’s first homicide of the year.

On Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at approximately 7:30 p.m., West Division officers were called to an apartment complex in the area of 110 Avenue and 124 Street on the report of a disturbance.

Upon arrival, officers located a 20-year-old injured male who was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS. A male suspect was also located in the vicinity with non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics.

An autopsy took place yesterday, Monday, Jan. 7, 2019 and the Edmonton Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be stab wounds and the manner of death to be homicide.

Martin Ronald Damien Grey, 32, is charged with second degree murder in relation to the death of the 20-year-old male. The victim and the accused were both from Edmonton and were known to one another.

Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased in this investigation for the following reasons: it does not serve an investigative purpose and the EPS has a duty to protect the privacy rights of the victims and their families.

Police locate deceased male in apartment complex; Homicide Section investigating

At approximately 7:30 p.m. yesterday evening, Saturday, January 5, 2019, West Division officers were called to an apartment complex the area of 110 Avenue and 124 Street on the report of a disturbance.

Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male. A male suspect was also located in the vicinity with non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and transported to hospital by EMS.

An autopsy has yet to be scheduled.

Homicide Section is conducting interviews at this time and no further information is available for release.

Major collision officers investigating early moring collision on 91 Street

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Section (MCIS) was called out to a two-vehicle collision this morning on 91 Street.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. today, Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, police were dispatched to the northbound lanes of 91 Street, north of Edwards Drive SW, on the report of a collision. Upon further investigation officers determined a black Ford F-150, operated by a 58-year-old male, was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of 91 Street at a high rate of speed. A black Kia Soul, operated by a 28-year-old female, was travelling northbound on 91 Street approximately 150 meters north of Edwards Drive at the same time, when the two vehicles collided.

Witnesses at the scene provided first-aid assistance to both drivers until EMS arrived. Both drivers were treated and transported to hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.

Although the investigation is in its early stages, MCIS investigators believe impairment was a factor in this collision with respect to both drivers. Investigators also believe the F-150’s speed played a role.

The investigation continues.

Checkstop kept busy over holidays and throughout 2018

Members of the EPS Impaired Driving Unit were kept busy this holiday season charging 59 drivers with impaired driving.

“This is a marked increase over our 2017 holiday Checkstop numbers,” says EPS Sgt. Rob Davis, noting that 42 motorists were arrested and charged with impaired driving last year during the holidays.

“Undoubtedly, this is in part due to an increased number of officer-citizen contacts made throughout this year’s holiday Checkstop campaign. Regardless, it continues illustrate that we still have a lot of work to do collectively as a society.”

That trend continued throughout 2018 where 149 citizens were arrested and charged with impaired driving, an increase of more than 17% over 2017, when 127 motorists were arrested and charged with impaired driving.

The Edmonton Police Service coordinates Checkstop campaigns throughout the year, including a number of events across the city over the holiday season.

The EPS Checkstop program involves static lines and roving patrols across the city looking for impaired drivers. While it is aimed at detecting impaired drivers and removing them from the road, a large component is also aimed at educating the public of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

 

The Checkstop campaign enhances other EPS impaired driving enforcement efforts such as Target All Drunk Drivers (TADD, which involves mobile enforcement near entertainment areas), as well as Curb the Danger (citizens reporting impaired drivers by calling 911), and helps to make Edmonton’s streets safer for all citizens.

The highest breath sample given during the 2018 New Year’s Eve Checkstop was 150mg%. The 21-year-old male driver was consequently arrested for impaired driving. Additionally during December, Checkstop members also handed out a total of 57 Graduated Licence Suspensions this holiday season, an increase of 17 over the number of GL Suspensions handed out in 2017 (40). Two Drug Recognition Expert Evaluations (DRE) were also completed.

The EPS Curb the Danger program continues to play a vital role in locating impaired drivers on city streets throughout Edmonton. Thanks to public awareness and concern, a total of 8,937 911 calls were received regarding potential impaired drivers, 820 during the month of December alone this year.

As a direct result of those 911 calls, EPS officers made 630 impaired driving arrests, imposed 292 roadside suspensions and sent warning letters to registered owners of 484 vehicles suspected of impaired driving.

• Call 911 if it is safe to do so.  Calling 911 in an emergency, or to report an impaired driver, is permitted while driving under the distracted driving law.

• Report the location, vehicle description, and licence plate number.
