MedicAlert Connect Protect service will help EPS officers reunite lost or wandering individuals with their families

A partnership between the Edmonton Police Service and MedicAlert Foundation Canada will help officers quickly reunite lost or missing individuals living with autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, or a cognitive brain injury with their family or caregivers.

MedicAlert Connect Protect gives police officers 24-hour access to a registered subscriber’s photo, identity, past wandering history, and other vital emergency information through their MedicAlert medical IDs.

This information will help officers to search more efficiently, increasing the chances that those who go missing are reunited with their loved ones sooner. Officers called to an emergency involving a MedicAlert subscriber will also have access to vital information which may be necessary to save a life.

“The Edmonton Police is proud to partner with MedicAlert to bring the Connect Protect service to the Edmonton community, which will ultimately increase the safety of people living with serious medical conditions who go missing throughout Alberta’s capital city,” said Acting EPS Chief Greg Preston.

“When an officer comes across a lost or missing person living with one of these serious medical conditions, they will now be able to quickly and efficiently check the individual’s bracelet and contact EPS Communications/Dispatch for critical information.”

The service will also provide officers with information that could ultimately save their lives.

“It’s critical that we’re able to find and recognize wandering or unidentified people as quickly and efficiently as possible, both to protect our subscribers and also to save police resources,” explains Robert Ridge, President and CEO of MedicAlert.”

Police update on April collision

The Edmonton Police Service is updating the public on a collision that occurred earlier this year and resulted in a fatality. At approximately 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 22, 2017, Southwest Division officers responded to a two-vehicle collision in the area of 105 Street and 77 Avenue. It was reported that a black 2010 Nissan Sentra was travelling eastbound on 77 Avenue approaching 105 Street when it allegedly drove through a stop sign and collided with a black 2009 Honda CRV travelling northbound on 105 Street through the intersection. The collision allegedly caused the CRV to spin around, mount a nearby curb and collide with a street sign, fence and four other vehicles.

 

EMS responded, treated and transported the 88-year-old male driver of the CRV to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 36-year-old female driver of the Sentra was not injured.

 

Due to medical complications, the 88-year-old male driver succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Monday, May 1, 2017.

 

As a result of the male driver’s passing, EPS Major Collision Unit assumed the investigation from Southwest Division and the collision was deemed a traffic fatality.

 

Police do not believe alcohol and speed were factors in the collision.

 

The 36-year-old female driver of the Sentra was issued a traffic violation for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Police asking public to help locate suspect

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a suspect who is wanted in relation to a recent armed robbery and home invasion.

Jason Roberts, 37, is wanted in connection to an armed robbery and a home invasion that occurred on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 in the city’s west end.

 

Roberts is considered armed and dangerous and the public is advised not to approach him.

 

Police believe he may be frequenting west and downtown Edmonton.

Roberts is described as a Caucasian male with short brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a light brown jacket and riding a mountain bike.

Arrest made in summer homicide

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has made an arrest in relation to a homicide that occurred this summer.

Brendan Christopher Dion, 27, has been charged with second degree murder, use of a firearm while committing an offense and unauthorized possession of a firearm in relation to the death of James Joel Dunham, 40.

 

West Division patrol officers responded to a weapons complaint at a residential address near 101 Avenue and 153 Street, at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Friday, July 21, 2017. Officers found a male deceased when they arrived on scene.

 

The Edmonton Medical Examiner determined that Dunham died from multiple gun-shot wounds.

 

This was Edmonton’s 29^th homicide of 2017.

Police looking for suspects connected to at least seven convenience store robberies

The Edmonton Police Service Robbery Section is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying suspects that are believed to be connected to at least seven robberies in the city.

Police believe two to four suspects have been targeting convenience stores in the early morning hours over the weekend between August and October in the south side of Edmonton.

 

The suspects, who allegedly produce a weapon, have stolen undisclosed amounts of cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets.

 

The suspects are described as in their early 20s, Caucasian or Indigenous, approximately between 5’8” and 5’10” tall and have slim builds.

• Friday. Aug. 11, 2017 around 4 a.m. in the area of 114 Street and 17 Avenue SW.  

• Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 around 5:30 a.m. in the area of Towne Centre Blvd.

• Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017 around 5:30 a.m. in the area of 199 Street and 8 Avenue SW.

• Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 around 3:30 a.m. in the area of 114 Street and 17 Avenue SW.

• Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017 around 4:30 a.m. in the area of 149 Street and 45 Avenue.

• Monday, Oct. 2, 2017 around 2:20 a.m. in the area of 17 Avenue and Mill Woods Road.

• Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 around 4:45 a.m. in the are of 17 Avenue and Mill Woods Road.

EPS investigates two incidents believed to be related to Strathcona County file

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating two incidents that are believed to be connected to a larger Strathcona County RCMP file.

Downtown Division officers responded to a report of a carjacking on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017 around 11:45 p.m. in the area of 118 Avenue and 104 Street, where a woman’s black Ford Fusion was stolen.

 

Shortly thereafter, Northwest Division officers responded to a report of a personal robbery of another woman around 11:55 p.m. in the area of 106 Avenue and 92 Street. The suspect vehicle involved in this incident matched the description of the one reported in the carjacking incident just 10 minutes earlier.

 

The suspicious vehicle then fled to Sherwood Park (please refer to the RCMP for further information).

 

It is believed these two incidents that occurred in Edmonton are related and police continue to investigate.

Traffic Section investigating serious pedestrian collision

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) is investigating a serious pedestrian collision that has left an elderly woman in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017 a 70-year-old female was crossing 87 Avenue at 169 Street in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a 2013 Nissan Altima.

 

Investigations revealed that the vehicle was travelling northbound on 169 Street turning west onto 87 Avenue at the time of the collision.

 

The pedestrian suffered multiple serious injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision.

 

Charges are pending against the 47-year-old male driver of the Nissan.
