Assist to ID suspect who stole from woman in a wheelchair

The Edmonton Police Service is asking the public to help identify a suspect after he allegedly stole a cell phone from woman in a wheelchair.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, a woman who was waiting for a DATS bus around 7 a.m. reported that a male suspect approached her in the area of 16 Avenue and 48 Street. He asked to borrow her cell phone to call his grandmother. When the woman reluctantly handed him the cell phone, the suspect ran away with it.

 

The suspect is described as a Caucasian or Indigenous male, in his 20s. He is about 5’10” tall and weighs about 190 lbs.

 

Police are releasing photos and video of the suspect and are asking the public to help identify him.

Over 2,700 traffic violations issued during fall “Big Ticket Event”

Edmonton Police Service officers and City of Edmonton automated enforcement handed out a total of 2723 traffic violations last week during Operation 24 Hours.

The 24-hour enforcement period took place from Thursday, Oct. 5 to Friday, Oct. 6, 2017. 2265 of the 2723 violations were solely related to speed. There were also 426 violations for seatbelt infractions, distracted driving, red light violations and other Traffic Safety Act Violations.

 

“Speed continues to be a significant concern on our roadways,” says Sergeant Kerry Bates with the EPS Traffic Section. “As temperatures drop, motorists are encouraged to slow down and adjust to the road conditions.”

 

The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year (such as Operation 24 Hours) to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.

Traffic Section continues to search for suspect in hit and run

The EPS Traffic Section continues to search for the suspect vehicle and driver responsible for a hit and run on the evening of Oct. 5, 2017.

A 40-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries when he was struck in a marked crossed walk at 82 Street and 128A Avenue around 8:10 p.m. on Oct 5, 2017. The vehicle, which was travelling southbound on 82 Street, did not stop and left the scene. An astute citizen safely followed the vehicle, providing police with the license plate number, but lost sight of it at 66 Street and 128 Avenue where the truck was last seen travelling at a high rate of speed.

 

Investigators are asking the public for information that could help them locate the suspect vehicle and driver.

 

The EPS is looking for a white 2011 Ford F-250 Superduty crew pickup truck with a long box with construction bars in the box. It's believed the truck may have front end damage as a result of the collision. It was also reported that the back of the truck had lettering or letter decals of “Backrack,” has tinted windows, was heavily covered in white/grey dust, with the license plate BDC 1081.

Traffic Section investigating fatal collision on Henday

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) is investigating a fatal collision after a female driver travelled into oncoming lanes and struck another vehicle head on.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. today (Oct. 7, 2017) a vehicle was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the Anthony Henday at 109 Avenue and struck a southbound Mercedes head on. Another southbound vehicle struck the back of the Mercedes as a result of the collision, immediately after the primary collision.

 

The 28-year-old female driver from the NB vehicle, a Honda Odyssey, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and passenger from the Mercedes sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries.

 

Investigators are in the process of locating family/next of kin of the deceased female.

 

This marks Edmonton’s 23^st fatal collision of 2017.

Man dies after walking into path of LRT

A man in his 20’s has died as a result of being struck by an LRT after he accidentally walked into its path at 115A Street and 60 Avenue at 11:55 a.m. this morning (Friday, Oct. 6, 2017).

“This is a very unfortunate accident and very tragic for his family,” says Sgt. Rick Evans of Major Collision Investigation Unit. “Investigations reveal that after stopping for the eastbound train to pass, he didn’t hear the westbound LRT when walking in the crossing and walked into its path.”

 

It was reported by witnesses that the 22-year-old man, who was wearing ear-buds at the time of the incident, was crossing northbound in a marked LRT pedestrian crossing.

Public information and warning: Violent and sexual offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is issuing the following warning: Gregory Ottertail, 40, is a convicted violent and sexual offender and the EPS has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another violent or sexual offence against someone while in the community.

Ottertail will be residing in the Edmonton area. The EPS is seeking a recognizance order on Otterail and he will be closely monitored by the EPS’ Behavioral Assessment Unit.

Ottertail has been placed on a series of court ordered conditions including:

• Must abide by a curfew of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily

• Must abstain from the possession or consumption of alcohol and drugs, including marijuana

• Must not be found in any place whose primary source of income is the sale or consumption of alcohol (i.e. bars, taverns, nightclubs, lounges, liquor stores)

• Must not leave the City of Edmonton without the approval of his supervisor

• Must not be in possession of any weapons, including knives

• Must report any intimate relationships to his supervisor

 

The EPS is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community.

Charges laid in traffic stop

Edmonton Police Service Specialized Traffic Apprehension Team (STAT) investigators have charged two men after a traffic stop last night that resulted in an officer involved shooting and two polices members being injured.

Just before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017 members of a STAT team were conducting investigations in the area of 44 Avenue and 211 Street in relation to suspicious vehicles in an area frequented by people in the drug trade. During an attempted traffic stop, an incident occurred when one of the vehicles attempted to flee. During ‎the incident, two officers were injured, and an officer discharged his service pistol, injuring the driver of the vehicle. 

The injured male was treated and taken to hospital, and the other two suspects were arrested by SW Division officers at the scene. Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported at the time of the incident.

ASIRT continues to investigate the shooting.

The driver of the vehicle was released from hospital today and transported to SW Division to face charges. One male passenger in the suspect vehicle has also been charged. No charges have been laid against the third suspect.

 

Everett Lovell White, 22, (the driver of the suspect vehicle) has been charged with the following:
