The Edmonton Police Service has issued arrest warrants for Leon Halkett, 32, who allegedly breached conditions of his court order.

Halkett is arrestable for breach of recognizance (x4.)

 

Halkett poses a great risk to the public and is considered by police to be a violent and sexually violent offender who has preyed on random women, as well as women whom he has been in relationships with.

Detectives seek leads in case surrounding 2012 homicide of Chi Lik Wong

Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying Chi Lik Wong’s killer.

The 50-year-old Edmonton restauranteur was gunned down outside of his Crestwood residence five years ago tomorrow, on Sept. 9^th, 2012, at approximately 11:10 p.m.

West Division patrol members were called to a residence in the area of 145 Street and 97 Avenue after reports of shots being fired nearby. Upon arrival, officers discovered Wong lying on the driveway. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.

“We’re looking for any leads from the public that will help us progress our investigation,” said EPS Homicide Det. Alan Elliott. “It’s been five years since the Wong family lost their loved one to such a violent and tragic death.

Five years have passed since Wong was murdered, time which investigators hope will encourage someone to come forward with important information.

“Sometimes people with evidence are too intimidated to come forward to police at the outset of such a traumatizing event. We certainly understand that fear, though we’re hopeful that anyone with information regarding this murder will feel more comfortable now to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.”

Police asking for public’s assistance in locating missing teens

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a 16-year-old male and a 15-year-old female.

Daniel Taeho Lee, 16, and Subhana Tanweer, 15, were both last seen at Lillian Osbourne School yesterday, Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017. Both individuals are believed to be in each other’s company.

 

Lee has dark brown/black hair and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt, a black hoodie and usually wears glasses.

 

Tanweer is described as having tanned skin, brown eyes and was last seen wearing black pants and a black sweater.

Missing Person: Subhana Tanweer, 15

Both Lee and Tanweer’s disappearance are considered to be out of character, and as a result, there are concerns for their well-being.

Police asking public to help identify suspect in sexual assault

The Edmonton Police Service is asking the public for assistance in identifying a suspect in a reported sexual assault.

On Apr. 10, 2017, police responded to a report of an alleged sexual assault that took place in the area of 72 Street and 81 Avenue in late March.  A female in her late 50s reported that she was sexually assaulted by a male at a residence in the area between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Mar. 31, 2017.  The male, who was known to the woman as an acquaintance, reportedly contacted her after a number of years and allegedly sexually assaulted her during their brief visit. He then left the area immediately after.

 

After exhausting all other investigative avenues, police are seeking assistance from the public in identifying the male.

 

The suspect is described as a 45-50-year-old male, approximately 5’9” tall with a medium build. He was wearing dark coloured pants, a white shirt and a black jacket. Of note is the suspect’s hair, which was shaved on the sides, long on top and tied back in a ponytail.

Excessive speeders ongoing issue on Groat Road

The Edmonton Police Service is reminding drivers to slow down on Groat Road after issuing more than 450 speeding violations since mid-June.

A response to police and community concerns regarding speeding and careless driving in the area, officers with the EPS West Division Traffic Team have been conducting targeted enforcement in the Groat Road area throughout the summer. Marked as a 50 km/h speed zone from River Valley Road to 104 Avenue, and a 60 km/h zone thereafter, the winding pattern of Groat Road is attractive for drivers looking to test the limits of their vehicles.

 

Since targeted speed enforcement began on June 15, 2017, 465 drivers have been caught travelling over the posted speed limit on Groat Road. Forty-three of these drivers were captured travelling 50 km/h or more over the posted limit and were subsequently issued a mandatory court summons.

 

“Unfortunately, these numbers represent only a fraction of the speeders that we see but are unable to intercept,” says Const. Bryce Healey with the West Division Traffic Team. “We have caught several drivers more than once during this enforcement period, sometimes within 24-hours.”

 

Last month, officers observed multiple dangerous speeding and careless driving incidents on Groat Road:

• On Aug. 6, 2017 at approximately 9 p.m. a blue and white 2014 BMW HP4 motorcycle was observed travelling 112 km/h in the posted 60 km/h speed zone. Within the next ten minutes, the same motorcycle was captured speeding twice more at a 111 km/h and a 123 km/h and was also observed dangerously weaving in and out of traffic, nearly missing a bus.  Officers conducted a traffic stop and the 29-year-old male driver was issued three compulsory court summons and a violation for careless driving.
  
  

• On Aug. 20, 2017 at shortly before 10 p.m. a red 2001 Honda 929 motorcycle was observed travelling 92 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone. While attempting to conduct a traffic stop, officers observed the motorcycle pass two vehicles on River Valley Road by driving into the oncoming traffic lanes and then accelerating to 166 km/h on the James McDonald Bridge. Once stopped, the 28-year-old male driver was issued a speeding violation, a careless driving violation and a mandatory court summons for speeding.
  
  

• On Aug. 22, 2017 shortly after 8 p.m. a red 2007 Ducatti was observed repeatedly speeding and weaving in and out of traffic, reaching 98 km/h in the 50 km/h posted speed zone and 94 km/h in the 60 km/h speed zone. Once safely stopped, officers noticed that a 10-year-old child was a passenger on the motorcycle. The 44-year-old male driver was issued two speeding violations and a careless driving violation.
  
  

“Groat Road is a busy and winding road and easily becomes dangerous for motorists and pedestrians when drivers speed or drive carelessly,” says Healey. “Slowing down and adhering to the speed limit makes all roadways safer for everyone.”

Assist to ID suspects in gas station shooting

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s assistance to identify two suspects who were allegedly involved in a shooting last week.

On Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017, around 1:20 a.m., police responded to a weapons complaint at a gas station in the area of 118 Avenue and 35 Street. It was reported that an altercation took place between a cyclist and vehicle after the bicycle struck the vehicle’s front bumper. The cyclist was then allegedly shot by a male in the vehicle.

 

EMS responded, treated and transported the male to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Suspect A is described as a male believed to be around 18-20 years of age, standing 5’10” and weighing approximately 160-180 lbs. He has dark brown/black hair and was last seen wearing a black jacket, white t-shirt and white capris pants. He was also wearing white Adidas sneakers.

 

Suspect B is described as a 20-year-old male, standing 5’10” and weighing approximately 180 lbs. He has brown hair and was last seen wearing a blue graphic t-shirt with “Keep it” written across the front, blue jeans and grey sneakers.

Suspect wanted on Canada-wide warrant for murder arrested in Vancouver

The man allegedly involved in the death of Valerie Maurice, 29, of Montreal was arrested this evening by the Vancouver Police Department.

Gregory Christopher Tessman, 49, was arrested downtown Vancouver on East Hastings Street at a homeless shelter this evening, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, and is charged with second degree murder.

 

“I would like to thank the media for their assistance with this investigation, which ultimately led to the quick arrest of Mr. Tessman,” says Staff Sergeant Bill Clark of the EPS Homicide Section.

 

This is Edmonton’s 34th homicide of the year.

Background

 

Northeast Division patrol officers responded to a “check on welfare” call on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017 at a residence in the area of 144 Avenue and 88 A Street. Upon arrival, a woman was found deceased inside a suite where she does not reside.

 

On Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, the Edmonton Medical Examiner determined that Valerie Maurice, 29, from Montreal, died as a result of strangulation. The manner of death is homicide.

 

A Canada-wide warrant was issued on Sept. 5, 2017 for the arrest of Gregory Christopher Tessman in relation to the death of Maurice.
