Police investigating suspicious death in west Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death that occurred earlier this morning in west Edmonton.

West Division patrol officers responded to a weapons complaint at a residential address near 101 Avenue and 153 Street, at approximately 5:20 a.m. this morning, Friday, July 21, 2017.

 

Upon arrival, officers found a male deceased on scene. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled.

Southwest residents reminded to lock up vehicles and garages

Police are reminding residents of two southwest Edmonton neighbourhoods to lock up their vehicles and garages, following a recent spike of criminal activity in those areas.

Residents of Garneau and Old Strathcona have been especially hit hard by thieves this summer.

Between June 1^st and July 19^th, Southwest Division officers have investigated 31 incidents of thieves stealing valuables from vehicles parked on streets and in garages throughout the popular entertainment district.

In several instances, it was reported to police that vehicles were left unlocked and/or with keys inside, which lead to eight vehicles being stolen from these neighbourhoods over the same period of time.

Residents are also cautioned not to leave garage remotes inside their vehicles, providing thieves with direct access to your garage and possibly your house if the inside door to the residence is left unlocked.   

TIPS TO PREVENT VEHICLE THEFT:

Do not leave your vehicle running - Under no circumstances should you leave your vehicle unattended while running with the key in the ignition. NOTE: Remote car starters are not a problem; they are designed to shut off if attempts are made to steal the vehicle.

No Spare Keys - Do not leave a spare key hidden in the vehicle. Thieves look for spare keys, and once they break into your vehicle, they know all the hiding spots. You can get a spare key holder for your wallet or purse.

Lock Up Your Vehicle - Always check that the doors, windows, and sun roof are shut and locked when you park your vehicle.  Leave your vehicle in a locked garage where possible. Lock your vehicle even when it is in the locked garage.

Be aware of where you park - park in parking lots that have more than one of the following:

1. Security cameras
2. Security patrolling the parking lot
3. Someone working at an entrance/exit booth
4. A gated parking lot that needs a pass to get in and out
5. Well lit
6. A busy parking lot with lots of people coming and going or an area where there are lots of vehicles or pedestrians passing by.

Treat Your Keys Like Cash – Don’t leave keys in places where they are easy to snatch, such as a gym locker, on your desk at work, visible in an open purse or unattended in a shopping cart. Thieves will grab and go, then head out to the parking lot and push the button on your key fob until they find your car. 
    
Use a Steering Wheel Locking Device (e.g. The Club) - A well-secured car will deter thieves. There are other devices available to consumers to stop thieves from easily stealing your vehicle. See your local automotive stores for details. 

Do not leave items in your vehicle - Thieves can be attracted to your car because personal items are left in plain sight. Never leave anything in your vehicle, including loose change, cell phones, CDs, cameras, clothing, sunglasses, cigarettes, lighters, and any other items. 

Install a Remote Car Starter - Remote starters are designed to shut off if anyone attempts to drive the vehicle without a key. This will allow you to warm up your car without risk of theft.

No charges laid in latest homicide; deemed non-culpable

The Edmonton Medical Examiner has confirmed that a 38-year-old Edmonton man died in hospital on Saturday, July 15, 2017, the result of blunt force trauma to the head in connection to an altercation that occurred on July 12, 2017.

Northeast patrol members responded to a 911 assault complaint at an address in the Evergreen Mobile Home Park, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2017.

It was reported to police that a 38-year-old male and a 19-year-old male engaged in a physical confrontation, which led to the older male sustaining life-threatening head injuries. The 38-year-old male was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics, where he succumbed to his injuries on July 15^th.

In consultation with the Crown, EPS Homicide investigators will not be laying charges. The death has since been determined to be non-culpable.

This marks Edmonton’s 28^th homicide of 2017.

Every investigation is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased or the accused in this investigation for the following reasons: it does not serve an investigative purpose, there is no risk to public safety and the EPS has a duty to protect the privacy rights of the victims and their families.

Missing woman located

An 85-year-old woman who was reported missing on Wednesday, July 11, 2017 was located this morning in Calgary, safe and unharmed, with assistance from the Calgary Police Service.

Police seek public’s assistance locating missing woman

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s help locating a missing 85-year-old woman.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. yesterday evening, Tuesday, July 11, 2017, Louise Janzen, 85, left the Misericordia Hospital in the area of 87 Avenue and 169 Street to go for a walk. She was last seen heading eastbound on 87 Avenue toward the Esso gas station at 165 Street.

 

Janzen is described as a Caucasian female with grey hair and wears glasses. She is 5’5” tall, weighing approximately 160lbs and was last seen wearing a black and white checkered dress. Janzen uses a walker and left the hospital with it. 

 

 

Missing: Louise Janzen, 85

Janzen requires medication and, as such, there are concerns for her well-being. She is known to frequent West Edmonton Mall and is familiar with the Edmonton Transit System. There are no indications to suggest foul play.

Public information and warning: Sex offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Robert Major, 49, is a convicted sexual offender and the Edmonton Police Service has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another sexual offence against a female, including children, while in the community.

Major will be residing in the Edmonton area. The Edmonton Police Service is seeking a recognizance order on Major and he will be closely monitored by the EPS Behavioural Assessment Unit.

 

Major has been placed on a series of court ordered conditions including:

• Must abide by a curfew of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily

• Must not travel out of the City of Edmonton without written permission from his supervisor

• Must not purchase, possess or consume any alcohol or drugs, including marijuana

• Must not enter establishments whose primary source of income is derived from the sale or consumption of alcohol

• Must not associate with any person known or have reason to believe has a criminal record or is involved in criminal activity without written approval from his supervisor

• Must not purchase or possess any children’s or woman’s undergarments

• Must not be in, near or around places where children under the age of 18 years are likely to congregate (i.e. elementary/secondary schools, daycare centres, parks, swimming pools, wading pools, splash parks, or recreational centres) unless accompanied by an adult previously approved by his supervisor

• Must not be in the presence of any children under the age of 18 unless accompanied by an approved adult aware of his criminal history and previously approved by his supervisor

• Must not own, view or possess any materials that depict children in any state of dress, whether it is on paper, video, computer discs, hard drive or any electronic media

Hit-and-run collision results in $14,000 drug seizure

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 42-year-old man following a hit-and-run collision that resulted in a drug seizure.

On Sunday, July 2, 2017 at approximately 8:15 a.m. Southeast Division officers responded to the report of a hit-and-run collision in the area of 72 Street and 21 Avenue SW. Upon arrival, officers found a 2013 Toyota Highlander SUV that had collided with a parked 2010 Dodge Ram truck causing the truck to collide with another parked vehicle in the immediate vicinity. Witnesses reported that the male driver of the Highlander had exited the vehicle and fled northbound between houses in the area.

 

The EPS Canine team was called in to assist and PSD Finn and his handler were able to successfully track the driver to a nearby backyard. The male was then arrested without incident and found to be in possession of two backpacks containing various quantities of drugs and cash.

 

In total, officers seized 46.1 g of fentanyl powder, 2.9 g of meth and 6.4 g of cocaine with a total estimated street value of $14,000.

 

“Thanks to the assistance of witnesses and the EPS Canine Unit, a hit-and-run suspect was quickly apprehended and a significant quantity of fentanyl was removed from Edmonton streets,” says Const. Danielle Pelletier with Southeast Division.

 

Mark Bratraki, 42, has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance (x2), possess stolen property (proceeds of crime) and fail to comply with a probation order (x2).
