EPS charges woman for pointing laser at Air 1 members

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 28-year-old woman with pointing a laser at EPS air crew members who were piloting Air 1 Monday evening above a southeast neighbourhood.

Southeast Division and Air 1 members were responding to an attempted B&E call in the Bonnie Doon area at approximately 3 a.m., Monday, July 11, 2017, when air crew members were repeatedly targeted by a blinding laser being pointed at them from the ground.

Southeast patrol officers were guided to a residence near 88 Street and 84 Avenue, where a female suspect was arrested.

“The Edmonton Police Service has zero tolerance for irresponsible behavior like this that seriously compromises the safety of our air crew, not to mention our citizens,” said Staff Sgt. Tom Bechthold, of the EPS Flight Operations Section. “Air 1 officers play a vital role in assisting our members on the ground in their daily efforts to keep our city safe.”

Sarah Schenker, 28, of Edmonton, was charged with endangering the safety of an aircraft in flight" under the Federal Aeronautics Act.

EPS investigating two shooting incidents in Downtown Division

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating two shooting incidents that occurred earlier tonight (Monday, July 10, 2017) in Downtown Division.

Just after 6:30 p.m., police responded to a call for service in the area of 104 Street and 107 Avenue. It was reported that a female was shot and went to a convenience store to get help. She was treated and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

 

EPS officers responded to a weapons complaint just before 8 p.m. in an alley around 108 Avenue and 112 Street. Witnesses report a male was riding a bicycle when he was allegedly shot. He was treated and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

 

Police are working to determine if the two shootings are related.

A vehicle is not a babysitter

With the weekend forecast projecting to be near 30 C, the Edmonton Police Service is reminding citizens to never leave their children and pets unattended in a vehicle.

This message from police comes on the heels of an incident that occurred in northeast Edmonton last night.

 

On Thursday, July 6, 2017, at approximately 8:20 p.m., police received a call from citizens stating that a baby had been left in a vehicle unattended in the area of 55 Street and 167 Avenue. It was reported that the baby had been in the car with the window was left slightly open for about 10 minutes before police were called. At the time of this incident it was 26 C outside and the infant was not very responsive.

 

EPS and EMS arrived on scene. EMS removed the baby from the vehicle and immediately treated the baby. The eight-month-old female baby was treated and transported to hospital for precautionary reasons.

 

Police subsequently located the mother of the infant. The mom said she brought her baby with her to meet up with a friend for coffee and alleged she forgot the infant in the vehicle.

 

The 22-year-old mother was charged with cause a child to be in need of intervention under the Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act.

 

“A child’s safety is top priority, regardless of the weather or inconvenience,” says Sgt. Lael Sauter with the EPS Child at Risk Response Team (CARRT). “Leaving a child alone in a vehicle is dangerous and can cause them medical distress, at its worst, be a cause of death. This incident could have had a tragic ending.”  

 

Parents and guardians can take simple steps to prevent a tragedy from happening:

• Use drive-through services

• Plan outings that fit both the child and the adult’s schedule

• Wake a napping child or postpone an errand rather than leaving a child alone.

 

“A vehicle is a false sense of security,” says Sgt. Sauter. “It takes seconds for a child to be put at risk. They could accidently put the vehicle in motion, exit the vehicle and wander off or your automobile could be stolen with your children inside.

 

If a member of the public sees a child in a vehicle that is in distress, call 911 immediately. Stay with the child until help arrives.

 

“The bottom line is, a vehicle is not a babysitter,” says Sgt. Sauter.

Police seek public assistance identifying man in fraud investigation

The Edmonton Police Service is asking the public to help identify a suspect.

On Tuesday, Apr. 4, 2017 an unknown male allegedly attended a financial institution in the area of 170 Street and Stony Plain Road and opened a bank account using fraudulent identification and fraudulent government documents. The male suspect then reportedly deposited a cheque associated with another fraudulent bank account and withdrew a large sum of money before leaving the financial institution.

 

Following this incident, additional fraudulent transactions were also reported at several ATMs across the city. Approximately $50,000 in fraudulent funds was allegedly withdrawn between Apr. 4 and Apr. 10, 2017.

 

Police believe this suspect may also be connected to similar incidents at other financial institutions in the Edmonton area.

Morning death confirmed homicide

The Edmonton Medical Examiner has completed an autopsy on the suspicious death of a woman that occurred early this morning.

Jordin Amber Aksidan, 21, died as a result of a gunshot wound and the manner of death is a homicide.

 

Homicide detectives continue to investigate.

Charges laid in criminal flight

The Edmonton Police Service has charged three people involved in a criminal flight from police which led to a fatal collision on Whitemud Drive on Monday, July 3, 2017.

Zachary James Grogan, 32, is charged with fail to stop at scene of accident involving death (x2), flight from peace officer causing death (x2), dangerous driving causing death (x2), possession of stolen property over $5,000.

 

Alisha Grace Roode, 27, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of identity document (x2), possession of identity information (x2), possession of a controlled substance.

 

Trent James Ferris, 29, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, assaulting a peace officer.

 

Investigations continue as detectives try to identify a fourth male suspect who fled from the stolen vehicle after the collision.

 

The female who was a passenger in the vehicle that was struck by the stolen truck succumbed to her injuries in hospital last night (Tuesday, July 4, 2017).

On Wednesday, July 05, 2017, Northeast Division officers responded to a call for service just after 5 a.m. in the area of 119 Avenue and 34 Street. Upon arrival, they located a female in a residence with life-threatening injuries.

 

EMS treated and transported the female to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

 

Investigators are speaking to several witnesses this morning and are asking anyone with information to come forward to police.

 

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
