Homicide detectives investigate early morning suspicious death

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section is investigating a suspicious death that occurred early this morning.

On Wednesday, July 05, 2017, Northeast Division officers responded to a call for service just after 5 a.m. in the area of 119 Avenue and 34 Street. Upon arrival, they located a female in a residence with life-threatening injuries.

 

EMS treated and transported the female to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

 

Investigators are speaking to several witnesses this morning and are asking anyone with information to come forward to police.

 

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Man’s death confirmed a homicide; investigation continues

The Edmonton Medical Examiner has completed an autopsy on a man found dead over the weekend.

Mahamoud Mahdi Nur, 25, died from multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death has been confirmed a homicide.

 

Homicide Section continues to investigate.

Background

At approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2017, it was reported to police that shots were fired in the area of 116 Street and Jasper Avenue.

 

Detectives determined that a male and female were shot in the area before leaving the scene in a black SUV.

 

The injured male was found dead on the road by emergency personnel working in the area of 109 Street and 104 Avenue. Detectives have determined that the injured male was ejected from the vehicle due to it travelling at a high rate of speed.  The female sustained non-life threatening injuries.

 

Another victim, who was also shot, was located at a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police warn store merchants of fraudulent credit card scam; two men charged

The Edmonton Police Service has laid fraud charges against two men after they were allegedly discovered purchasing prepaid credit cards, with fraudulent credit card data.

In early June of this year, police received information that two men were purchasing prepaid credit cards from a gas station in the area of 143 Street and 118 Avenue, with fraudulent credit card data.

 

Upon further investigation, police determined that two men had allegedly attended the gas station on multiple occasions between May 25-28, 2017 and on June 1, 2017, fraudulently purchasing over $3,800 in prepaid Visa gift cards.

 

Police believe the men would purchase anywhere from $300 to $800 in prepaid credit cards during a transaction. The men would then allegedly attempt to pay with a tampered payment card in which the magnetic stripe was damaged. Alternative credit card information would then be provided to the store clerk, which was later discovered to be fraudulent.

 

Paul Vincent Olimba, 33, is charged with fraud under $5,000 (x5), unauthorized use of credit card data (x5) and uttering a forged document (x2).

 

Phelip Jonahs Olimba, 31, is charged with fraud under $5,000 (x2) and unauthorized use of credit card data (x2).

 

“We believe other stores in the city may have been affected by this scam,” says Const. Robert Pinter of the EPS’ Northwest Division.

 

“We encourage store merchants to review their practices when it comes to verifying payment information for any financial transaction.”

Police charge male driver after woman and dog fatally struck

The Edmonton Police Service has laid charges against the driver of a green SUV after a woman and her dog were fatally struck last month.

At approximately 7 p.m., on Saturday, June 17, 2017, a green Lexus SUV struck a 57-year-old woman and her dog crossing a marked crosswalk at Suder Greens Drive, between Lewis Estates Boulevard and Potter Greens Drive. The woman and her dog died on scene.

 

Van Huong Tran, 42, is charged with careless driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Speed or alcohol were not considered factors in this collision.

Police investigate fatal single-vehicle collision

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a fatal collision that occurred over the weekend in southwest Edmonton.

At approximately 11:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2017, Southwest Division officers responded to a single-vehicle collision. It was reported that a 33-year-old male was driving a 2013 Kawasaki ZX636 motorcycle southbound on Calgary Trail when the motorcycle struck a pole in the area of 55 Avenue.  

 

EMS responded, treated and transported the male to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

 

Speed is believed to be a factor in this collision.

EPS and ASIRT investigating criminal flight and fatal collision

Just before 8 p.m. on July 3, 2017 West Division patrol members were following a reported stolen truck travelling at 170 Street and 87 Avenue.

The vehicle was followed west out of the city in the area of Winterburn Road and eventually entered into a criminal flight with police at Whitemud Drive. Officers were directed to terminate the criminal flight when the truck was reported travelling left of centre. A short time after this, the truck collided head on with another vehicle.

 

One female occupant in the car was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries and the adult male driver was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

 

Several suspects fled on foot from the stolen truck at the collision scene and three were apprehended by patrol members nearby. The suspects arrested at the scene did not report any injuries that required medical treatment.

 

Major Collision Investigation Section continues to investigate the fatal collision. West Division continues to investigate the stolen vehicle and criminal flight, and charges are pending.

 

ASIRT is investigating the circumstances surrounding the conduct of police during the criminal flight response. The EPS will not be providing further information or comment regarding the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision given the ongoing ASIRT investigation.
