Graduation Day for 30 New Edmonton Police Officers

Friends and family will come together to celebrate the swearing-in of 24 men and 6 women from Recruit Training Class 136 and Experienced Officer Program Class 13.

 

The Experienced Officer Program is for experienced police officers from other Canadian jurisdictions.

 

The ceremony will take place:

Police Chief Rod Knecht will be joined at the ceremony by MLA David Shepherd and Cathy Palmer, Chair of the Edmonton Police Commission. 

 

The program will include a formal procession by the EPS Honour Guard, performances by the EPS Pipes and Drums and the EPS Chorus, colourful flag and marching drills, comments from EPS members and special guests, and diploma presentations.  Recruit class members will also receive recognition awards for demonstrating excellence in problem solving, officer safety, academics, humanitarianism, fitness and the trainers’ choice category. 

  

Members of the public and media are invited to join family and friends at the graduation ceremony. Interviews will take place following the ceremony.

Autopsies completed in double homicide

Edmonton’s Medical Examiner has completed the autopsies on two men found dead in a vehicle in Southeast Edmonton on Jan. 11, 2017.

It has been confirmed that both victims died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The deceased have been identified as Navdeep Sidhu, 24 and Harman Mangat, 22, both residents of British Columbia.

Detectives believe this was not a random act, and that these drug-related murders are connected with drug activity in Lower Mainland B.C.

The two men were found dead in a running, white Dodge Ram truck with B.C. plates on 39 Street, near Charlesworth Drive on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 at approximately 1:30 p.m. by a member of the public.

Detectives continue to investigate and ask for information about the deaths and suspects.

Public information and warning: Violent offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Dean Goulet is a convicted violent offender and the Edmonton Police Service has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another violent offence against someone while in the community.

Goulet will be residing in the Edmonton area.  The Edmonton Police Service has obtained a recognizance order on Goulet and he will be closely monitored by the Behavioural Assessment Unit

Goulet has been placed on court ordered conditions including:

• Must abide by a curfew of 10 PM to 6 AM daily
• Must abstain from the possession or consumption of alcohol or drugs, including marijuana
• Must not be in any premise or establishment where the primary focus is the consumption or sale of alcohol (bars, nightclubs, casinos etc.)
• Must not associate with anyone with a criminal history

The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community.

Police investigating suspicious deaths in southeast

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating the suspicious deaths of two males found in a vehicle in southeast Edmonton.

Southeast Division patrol officers responded to an area near Charlesworth Drive and 39 Street, at approximately 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2016, after receiving a call from a member of the public.

Homicide Section is now on scene and has taken over the investigation. Additional details will be released when they become available.

Four inmates charged in Edmonton Institution incident

The Edmonton Police Service has charged four inmates in relation to two separate altercations.

On Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, police responded to the Edmonton Institution around 5 p.m. after receiving a report of an altercation with a weapon. A 49-year-old male inmate was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Grant Hoeft, 26, and Lenny Tecomba, 20, were charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

Shortly thereafter, around 6:45 p.m., police responded to a second incident at the Edmonton Institution involving an altercation and a weapon. A 30-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Bradley Dustyhorn, 22 and Kody Bear, 26, were charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

An offer not worth its weight in gold

The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about counterfeit gold bars being sold to citizens and merchants across the city.

Police received information late last year regarding the sale of counterfeit gold bars to various merchants in Edmonton. Upon further investigation, it was quickly determined that the counterfeit gold bars were indeed fakes.

“It can be difficult to tell whether this product is real or fake upon first glance,” says Const. Robert Wellon with the Criminal Investigation Section in Northwest Division. “We tested the product for authenticity and quickly determined these gold bars were nothing more than copper bars plated in gold.”

Investigators are warning merchants and citizens to be cautious should they be approached by someone selling gold bars, which appear professionally packaged and authentic. 

The counterfeit gold bars are being sold in various weight denominations and range in price. They weigh from 10 to 31 grams per piece and suspects are selling them for anywhere between $300 and $800 each.

A total of 220 grams ($10,000 market value) of counterfeit gold has been recovered by the EPS throughout this investigation.

“There have been approximately 20 sales transactions involving the counterfeit gold here in Edmonton alone,” says Wellon. “Store merchants are usually the primary target of this type of crime, but we are now starting to see this product being sold online through buy and sell websites, such as Kijiji.”

The Edmonton Police Service encourages all buyers and merchants to ask questions and request a purchase receipt from the seller.

“When something seems too good to be true - it usually is,” reminds Wellon.
