Charges laid in Jan. 4 homicide

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has charged a man in connection with a homicide that occurred on Jan 4, 2017. Kyle Benedict Shirt, 21, has been charged with second degree murder, and possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.

Police investigating homicide in south Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section is treating the death of a man, who succumbed to his injuries in hospital late yesterday, as a homicide.

On Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Southwest Patrol officers were called to the area of 103 Street and 45 Avenue on the report of an assault. When officers arrived they located Darrian Trevino-Sabourin, 21, in critical condition in a suite. Trevino-Sabourin was treated and transported to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 6:30 p.m..

Homicide investigators are conducting interviews and are looking to speak with anyone who may have information about this incident.

An autopsy was completed this morning, Dec. 5, 2017, at 9 a.m. and the Edmonton Medical Examiner determined that Trevino-Sabourin died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

Police do not have anyone in custody at this time.

Police seek public’s assistance to locate prolific thief

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance to locate a prolific thief who targets churches, schools and recreation centres.

Investigators believe Jesse Brian Brandon, 34, of Edmonton, (see photos below) is responsible for at least 10 thefts at locations across the city throughout 2016. In the most recent incident, Brandon allegedly broke into or tampered with 66 dressing room lockers at a south-side recreational facility, stealing laptops, purses, wallets, cell phones and credit cards, which lead to a subsequent string of frauds.

He is described as being a Caucasian male, approximately six feet tall with a slim build. He also has a tattoo on the right side of his neck that says “Gemini”.

Brandon is described as being violent, and currently has 12 warrants outstanding for previous thefts and domestic-violence related incidents.

Members of the public are encouraged not to approach Brandon should you see him, but instead contact police directly.

U of A student arrested and charged with cyber crimes

A University of Alberta student is facing numerous charges in connection with an alleged cyber-attack on university-owned computers.

University of Alberta Protective Services notified the Edmonton Police Service in late November, after becoming aware of a malware infection on the university’s network. The Edmonton Police Service Cyber Crimes Investigations Unit launched an investigation shortly thereafter.

Acting Sgt. Phil Hawkins of the EPS Cyber Crimes Investigation Unit confirmed both incidents took place between Nov.17^th and Dec. 8^th, 2016. In the first incident, the university’s response team located the malware on 287 computers, which potentially affected more than 3,300 faculty, staff and students. In the second incident, the malware was found on 17 computers and affected 19 students.

Yibin Xu, 19, is charged with mischief in relation to computer data, unauthorized use of computer services, fraudulently intercepting functions of a computer system and use of a computer system with intent to commit an offence.

Xu’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2017.

Edmonton Police Service kicks off 125th anniversary celebrations

The Edmonton Police Service is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2017, and to commemorate the occasion, numerous events and activities will be offered throughout the year to bring together employees, retired members and citizens.

The EPS has proudly served the citizens of Edmonton since Mayor Matthew McCauley issued Bylaw #15 on June 20, 1892, which allowed the municipality to appoint town constables to keep the peace.

“It’s my distinct privilege to help kick off this milestone year for the Edmonton Police Service,” says Chief Rod Knecht.  “I encourage all Edmontonians to join us in commemorating our shared history and the strong community spirit that has kept this city safe and growing for well over a century.”

Through the efforts of the EPS 125th Anniversary Organizing Committee, numerous celebratory activities have been planned for 2017 including:

• Throwback Thursdays – A fun and nostalgic look through the EPS archives with historic photos and articles coming out weekly on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
• Commemorative Comic Book – The fifth comic in the popular EPS Legacy of Heroes collection will be released, which will take readers “Back to the Beginning.”
• Oilers Recognition Event – The Edmonton Oilers will pay a special tribute to the EPS prior to the hockey game at Roger’s Place on Tuesday, March 7.
• Tree Planting – EPS officers will join school children for Arbor Day on Friday, May 5, and plant 125 trees to mark the 125^th anniversary.
• Civic Celebration – Join EPS at Edmonton City Hall on Tuesday, June 20, for the official anniversary celebrations and cake.  Later that evening the High Level Bridge will be lit up in EPS colours.
• K-Days Parade – The EPS Pipes and Drums and Honour Guard will lead officers and vehicles in full pageantry along the K-Days Parade route on Friday, July 21.
• Picnic in the Park – Come down to Borden Park on Sunday, August 20, for an afternoon of fun family activities with EPS members.  Everyone is welcome.
• Legacy Dedication – EPS will carry on its historic legacy with an archival dedication on Thursday, December 14.

The EPS is marking the special anniversary with a commemorative logo that highlights the proud history of the service from its frontier town roots to being a leader in community policing today. 

The logo features two constables, one reflecting on the past and one looking to the future, but both sharing a common purpose.  The transition of the police service is seen in the colours, as well as in the uniform and diversity of the members represented.  The silver maple leaf ties the anniversary of the police service to its Canadian heritage.

Police arrest over 40 people for impaired driving over holidays

The Edmonton Police Service ran an impaired driving campaign over the holiday season, which included a number of Checkstop events across the city.

The EPS Checkstop program involves vehicle-stop locations and roving patrols across the city looking for impaired drivers. While it is aimed at detecting impaired drivers and removing them from the road, a large component is also aimed at educating the public of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

The Checkstop Campaign enhances other EPS impaired driving enforcement efforts such as Target All Drunk Drivers (TADD - police mobile enforcement near entertainment areas) and Curb the Danger (citizens reporting impaired drivers by calling 911), and helps to make Edmonton’s streets safer for all citizens.

Curb the Danger calls received from residents also played an important role in helping to keep motorists and pedestrians safe over the holidays and throughout 2016.

In one instance, on New Year’s Eve, police responded to a Curb the Danger call that resulted in the arrest of an impaired 19-year-old female driver. The driver had allegedly collided with a bus shelter on the south side of 132 Avenue near 105 Street, at approximately 2:30 a.m. that morning. When tested by officers, the woman provided breath sample readings of 170mg% and 180mg%.

If you suspect a driver is impaired, please contact police to Curb the Danger:

• Call 911 if it is safe to do so.  Calling 911 in an emergency, or to report an impaired driver, is permitted while driving under the distracted driving law.
• Report the location, vehicle description, and licence plate number.
• Keep the vehicle in sight but do not attempt to chase the vehicle, or break the law to do so.

Detectives looking for witnesses in violent road rage incident

The Edmonton Police Service is asking anyone who may have witnessed a violent road rage incident in December to come forward to police.

On Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, police responded to call of an alleged road rage incident around 11:40 p.m. in the area of 75 Street and 78 Avenue. It was reported that an altercation ensured between the two drivers that left one man severely injured with stab wounds.

EMS responded to the scene, treated and transported the 37-year-old male to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect vehicle, a silver or grey pick-up truck, fled the scene prior to police arrival.
