Charges laid in 2014 homicide

The Edmonton Police Service has laid charges in the homicide of Freda Goodrunning that occurred on June 4, 2014.

Jesse Martin, 33, was arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016 and charged with second degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Background

On Wednesday, June 4, 2014, West Division patrol members responded to a call for service in the area of 174 Street and Stony Plain Road, at 1:45 p.m. Upon arrival, members found a deceased adult female inside a detached storage shed.

Freda Goodrunning, 35, died as a result of blunt force trauma.

This was Edmonton’s 12^th homicide of 2014.

Police request public’s assistance in identifying suspect vehicle in April homicide

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section is releasing a photo of the suspect vehicle believed to have been involved in the homicide of 34-year-old Kelly Thompson earlier this year.

On Thursday, April 14, 2016, at around 10 p.m., West Division officers were called to the area of 137 Street and 115 Avenue, after Thompson was located in critical condition. It was reported that approximately four or five suspects, wearing dark clothing with hoods, got out of a vehicle and allegedly struck Thompson multiple times with baseball bats and then fled the area in a vehicle.

Thompson died in hospital a few days later, on Saturday, April 16, 2016, as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

Homicide investigators believe the suspect vehicle to be a light-colored SUV with tinted windows.

“We are looking to speak with anyone who may have seen this newer model SUV in and around the area of 137 Street and 115 Avenue on the evening of April 14, 2016,” says Det. Alan Elliott with Homicide Section.

“We hope this photo will jog the memory of someone who has information critical to this homicide investigation,” says Elliott.

Thompson’s death was declared the city’s 15^th homicide of 2016.

Man driving erratically arrested, drugs found in vehicle

The Edmonton Police Service arrested a driver yesterday after a citizen called 911 to Curb the Danger.

Southeast Division patrol officers responded to the area of 68 Avenue and 75 Street on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016 just before 4 p.m. after receiving a report of a suspected erratic driver.

Police quickly located a Dodge Ram and determined that the licence plate and truck were reported stolen. The suspect vehicle continued on to 41 Avenue and pulled into a farm yard where police managed to stop the vehicle.

Police seized Fentanyl, methamphetamine, hashish and marijuana worth approximately $15,000 and $1,000 Canadian currency from the vehicle.

Nathan Harasym, 39, was charged with impaired driving (drugs), disqualified driving, possession for the purpose of trafficking (x4), possession of stolen property, possession contrary to order and warrant of apprehension and suspension.

VICE detectives charge Edmonton man with human trafficking offences

An Edmonton man is facing multiple firearm and human trafficking-related charges, for allegedly forcing a woman to work in the sex trade.

Vice Section detectives with the assistance of various EPS resources arrested Prince Opoku, 25, of Edmonton, following an investigation into the accused’s alleged involvement in the sexual services industry.

Police began investigating allegations of sexual exploitation in late November.

Opoku is alleged to have forced the complainant, a woman in her early 20s, to travel to cities in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta to work in the sex industry beginning in early 2015.

On Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, EPS members from various units converged on a northeast Edmonton residence, where Opoku was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.

Opoku is facing multiple firearm and human trafficking-related charges including:

• Procuring
• Trafficking in Persons
• Material Benefit from Sexual Services
• Advertising Sexual Services
• Knowingly Possess Unauthorized Firearm
• Careless storage of a Firearm
• Breach of Undertaking
• Breach of Recognizance
• Breach of Peace Bond (x2)

Additional charges may be pending.

Investigators are also releasing a photo of the accused (see below), as they believe there may be additional female complainants who have been exploited and forced into prostitution by Opoku, as well as witnesses who possess relevant information.

EPS looking for Grinch stealing holiday cheer

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who allegedly stole holiday decorations from the Summerside neighbourhood.

On Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, police were called to a residence on Summerside Drive around 2:20 p.m. after receiving a report of stolen holiday decorations. Outdoor LED projector lights, an extension cord and an outdoor timer were reported stolen.

Surveillance footage shows a suspect vehicle pulling into the complainant’s driveway. The suspect then exits the vehicle and returns moments later, carrying decorations and smoking a cigarette. The suspect then drove away.  

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 5'8” tall with short brown hair. He was wearing a black baseball hat, jeans and a black sweater. 

The vehicle is described as a silver, 2-door Honda Civic with a silver cross hanging from the rear view mirror.

Another similar incident was reported through the EPS Online Crime Reporting tool.  It was reported that sometime between Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3, a suspect allegedly walked up to a residence in the Summerside neighbourhood, unplugged a Christmas tree that was located by the front door and carried it away, perhaps with the assistance of a nearby vehicle.

The Christmas tree that was allegedly stolen is described as a white, pre-lit birch tree that was decorated with silver and blue ornaments.

Public information and warning: violent sexual offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Dana Fash, is considered by police to be a violent and sexually violent offender who is residing in Edmonton.

Fash is considered by police to pose a risk of significant harm to the community. He is being closely monitored by investigators in the EPS Behavioural Assessment Unit.
The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community.

Two men facing second-degree murder charges in connection with shooting death of Darren Sinner

Homicide detectives have arrested and charged two male suspects in connection with the Feb. 21, 2016 murder of Darren Douglas Sinner.

Vaughn/Emmanuel Bull, 25, and Patrick Vincent Campiou, 27, of Edmonton, have each been charged with second-degree murder. 

Background:        
Downtown Division patrol members responded to a 911 call for assistance at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016, near 101 Street and 104 Avenue. It was reported to police that a male in his 40’s was rushed to hospital by paramedics, following an altercation with a group of people.

Sinner, 41, of Edmonton, died while in hospital.
