Man charged in relation to arsons in southwest Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 23-year-old man in relation to five arsons in southwest Edmonton.

Wilhelm Weinmann, 23, is charged with arson to the property of others (x5), disguise with intent, and possession of an incendiary material.

The EPS Arson Unit continues to investigate.

Suspect apprehended in relation to string of arsons

The Edmonton Police Service has apprehended a male in his 20s in relation to a string of arsons over the last few days in southwest Edmonton.

On Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016 at approximately 7:45 a.m., southwest patrol officers were called to an alley north of 109 Street and 51 Avenue on the report of a fire. When officers arrived, they located remnants of a small structure fire.

The next day, on Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, at approximately 6 a.m., police were called to the same area where they located a jeep that had been set on fire.

Shortly thereafter, at approximately 7:30 a.m., officers located a motorhome engulfed in flames in the alley.

Today, Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, at approximately 3 a.m., police were once again called to the same alley where they located garbage and a fence that had been set on fire.

Later in the morning, around 8 a.m., southwest officers were proactively patrolling the area where the suspected arsons had taken place, when they spotted a pile of wood and shed on fire.

When officers approached the scene they witnessed a suspicious male leaving the area on foot. After further investigation, the male was apprehended without incident and taken into custody.

Charges are pending against the 23-year-old male, who is believed to be responsible for all five arsons in the area.

The EPS Arson Unit continues to investigate.

Former HSBC employee charged in $3-million bank fraud

An Edmonton man is facing multiple charges for allegedly defrauding a financial institution of more than $3 million.

The frauds are alleged to have occurred over a five-year period between 2004 and 2008 at an Edmonton branch of HSBC Bank Canada.

Economic Crimes Unit investigators believe Theodore (Ted)/Franklin Glade, 61, a former employee of HSBC Canada, engaged in a range of methods that saw the fraudulent diversion of millions of dollars into accounts that were controlled by Glade and his former life partner, Edmund Leonardo, 59.

“This was an individual that is alleged to have used his senior position and authority at a financial institution to defraud his employer of a significant amount of money,” said Staff Sgt. Sid Kingma, of the EPS Economic Crimes Unit.

Investigators arrested and charged Theodore (Ted) Franklin Glade on Nov. 2, 2016 with:

-       Fraud over $5,000.

-       Theft over $5,000.

-       Forgery.

-       Utter forged documents.

-       Launder proceeds of crime.

-       Theft over $5,000 (x3).

-       Personation to gain advantage.

A Canada-wide warrant has also been issued for Edmund Leonardo, for five fraud-related offences.

Leonardo is known to frequent the Greater Vancouver area and the Philippines, his birth country.

Edmonton man facing human trafficking charges involving teen girl

An Edmonton man is facing multiple human trafficking-related charges, including sexually exploiting a girl under the age of 18 for profit.

Vice Section detectives with the assistance of various EPS resources arrested Lexis Andrew Goyda, 24, of Edmonton, following a 10-week investigation into the accused’s alleged involvement in the sexual services industry.

Goyda is facing charges of:
- Procuring (x2)
- Material benefit from sexual service (x2)
- Advertise sexual services (x3)
- Procuring under 18 years of age
- Trafficking of a person under 18 years of age
- Material benefit from sexual services of a child
- Sexual exploitation
- Cause a child to be in need of protective services (CFE)
- Possession of a controlled substance (CDSA)

Investigators are releasing Goyda’s photo publicly, as they believe there may be other females, including girls under the age of 18, that have been exploited by the accused, both in Calgary and Edmonton.

Public information and warning: Violent Sexual Offender Released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning. Kenny Beaver is considered by police to be a violent sexual offender who poses a risk of significant harm to the community.

Beaver will be residing in the Edmonton area. The Edmonton Police Service is seeking a recognizance order on Beaver and he will be closely monitored by the Behavioural Assessment Unit of the Edmonton Police Service.

The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community.

Police seek assistance to identify suspect in sexual assaults

The Edmonton Police Service is asking the public to help identify a suspect in three reported sexual assaults that occurred on Nov. 8 and 9, 2016.

A female complainant reported that on Nov. 8, 2016, at approximately 6:20 p.m., while walking through a parking lot in the area of 146 Avenue and 25 Street, she was groped by a male.  

A second female complainant reported to police that she was walking from the Clareview LRT station to the Clareview Recreation Centre around 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2016 and a male approached her from behind and groped her.

A third female complainant reported to police that while running to catch a bus at 137 Avenue and 27 Street, around 9:40 a.m. on Nov. 9, 2016,  a male approached her from behind and groped her.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male of slim build, with a light/fair complexion, between 5’7”- 5’8” in height, with dark eyes, short brown hair and a full beard/moustache. He is believed to be between 30 and 35 years old, and was wearing a black or dark toque in all three incidents, with either a brown Carhart-style jacket or a light-coloured jacket with layers.

Man dies in hospital, following vicious early-morning assault

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 42-year-old man who died in hospital Sunday afternoon, as a result of injuries sustained during a vicious assault earlier that morning.

Northwest Division patrol officers responded to a call for assistance near 97 Street and 119 Avenue on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, where upon arrival they found a male lying unconscious on the sidewalk.

It was reported to police that two males were walking down 97 Street at approximately 3:20 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, when they were approached by four male and two female suspects. It is alleged that the suspects - not known to the complainants - then attempted to start a fight with the two men, who ignored the suspects and continued to walk away.

The suspects then reportedly assaulted the men, repeatedly punching one of the men in the face, while pushing the other to the ground, before repeatedly kicking the 42-year-old male in the head.

The suspects are believed to have fled the scene on foot, leaving the one male complainant in an unconscious state on the ground and the second male complainant with minor injuries.

Paramedics arrived on scene and were able to revive the 42-year-old male, before transporting him to hospital, where he would later succumb to his injuries Sunday afternoon.

The Medical Examiner has since conducted an autopsy on the deceased, confirming that Leonardo Duran Ibarez, 42, of Colombia, died as a result of injuries consistent with severe head trauma.

This is Edmonton’s 40^th homicide of 2016.
