Police discover firearms and explosives during search warrant

Firearms, explosives, drugs and stolen property were located earlier this week during search warrants executed by the Edmonton Police Service. Downtown Division officers, with the assistance of Tactical Section, Southeast Division and EPS Gang and Drug Unit, conducted a search warrant at a home and detached garage in the area of 20 Avenue and 46 Street on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016 at approximately 2:30 p.m. The warrant was executed in relation to a drug and weapons investigation.

Officers located and seized 12 firearms (various long barrel guns, sawed-off shotguns and handguns), prohibited silencers and suppressors, 28 prohibited magazines (ammunition storage/feeding devices), a large quantity of ammunition and body armour. Police also seized two stolen skid steers and a stolen flat deck trailer.

An improvised explosive device and suspected commercial explosive were discovered in the detached garage during the search warrant, prompting an evacuation of the surrounding neighbourhood. The EPS Explosive Disposal Unit attended the scene and used two counter charges to detonate the explosives on scene, as they were deemed too hazardous to transport. 

The operation resulted in damage to the garage window. No injuries were reported, and residents were permitted to return to the area at approximately 10 p.m. 

Police also executed a related search warrant on a residence in the area of 39 Avenue and 76 Street on Sept. 6, 2016, where small quantities of methamphetamine, hashish and heroin were seized, along with approximately 50 grams of marijuana, 348 synthetic marijuana pills, drug scales, baggies and just over $3,000 cash. 

Downtown Division officers conducted a traffic stop in connection to the investigation early Tuesday afternoon and two males were taken into custody without incident. One man now faces more than 70 charges. 

Graham McCagherty, 30, has been charged with possession of prohibited device (x47), unsafe storage of a firearm (x12), possession of explosive substance without lawful excuse, possession of an explosive substance without exercising reasonable care, possession of body armour without a valid permit (x3), possession of stolen property (x5) and possession of a controlled substance (x4).

Police seek public’s assistance to identify male(s) in connection to missing person

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s assistance to help identify a male(s) who is believed to have information relating to the disappearance of Wen Fu Guan, 31.

Guan was last seen leaving his residence on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016 around 4 p.m., driving a white Mitsubishi Outlander (2003 model), Alberta license place BRL 4979. A few days later, police located Guan’s vehicle in the area of 113 Street and 113 Avenue where it had been set on fire. 

Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance to help identify the male(s), in the below four photos, believed to have information which may be helpful in this investigation.

Guan has yet to be located and is described as a Chinese male with glasses, dark brown eyes and black hair. He is approximately 5’6” tall and weighs approximately 120 lbs.

Guan’s disappearance is out of character and there are concerns for his well-being.

Canada-wide warrant issued to locate man in connection to Brad MacDonald homicide

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of Austin Mackenzie Southworth, 26, who was allegedly involved in the homicide of Brad MacDonald, 37, earlier this year.

On Sunday, Apr. 10, 2016, at around 8:30 a.m., West Division officers were called to the area of Stony Plain Road and Winterburn Road, after MacDonald’s body was discovered in a field north of the 215 Street traffic ramp. The Edmonton Medical Examiner later confirmed that MacDonald died as a result of blunt force trauma.

Southworth is described as a Caucasian male with green eyes, short brown hair and light facial hair. He is approximately 5’7” tall, slim build and weighs 140 lbs.

Southworth has several tattoos including a tattoo on his left hand which reads “brothair,” a full sleeved tattoo with tribal markings covering his right arm, as well as star-shaped tattoos across the front of his neck.

Southworth is wanted on charges of second degree murder, possession of a dangerous weapon and robbery.

Homicide investigators believe Southworth may be in the Vancouver Island, British Columbia area. He may also be driving a blue Mazda MPV minivan (2004 model), Alberta license plate BPB 4769, with a broken driver’s side window.

Medical Examiner releases autopsy results

Autopsy results released by the Edmonton Medical Examiner confirm Joao Nascimento, 93, and his wife Maria Nascimento, 81, died from multiple stab wounds Friday, Sept. 2, 2016.

Edward Kyle Roberts, 31, is accused with breaking into a nearby residence and stealing a knife that he allegedly used to kill Joao Nascimento, 93, and Maria Nascimento, 81, after breaking into the couple’s nearby residence sometime on the morning of Friday, Sept. 2, 2016.

Roberts is charged with first degree murder (x2), break and enter (x2), possession of a weapon and breach of recognizance.

Background:

Downtown Division members responded to a suspicious person’s call at a residence near 111 Street and 111 Avenue, at approximately 12:13 p.m. Friday.

Upon arrival, EPS members engaged and arrested a male suspect and subsequently discovered the bodies of two deceased residents inside the home.

Police release video of assault suspect, ask witnesses to come forward

The Edmonton Police Service is releasing video footage of a suspect connected to an alleged assault that occurred on Saskatchewan Drive last month in hopes witnesses will come forward with information.

On Aug. 5, 2016, officers responded to the area of 116 Street and Saskatchewan Drive after an assault allegedly occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m.

It is reported a woman was walking along Saskatchewan Drive when she was grabbed, choked to unconsciousness and dragged into the bushes north of the walking path. Bystanders approached to assist the woman and the man allegedly fled the area on foot.

The suspect has been described as a dark-skinned male, 23-35 years of age, approximately 5’7” to 5’11” tall with short, black hair, a thin, black beard and average to stocky build.

Greater Manchester Police members travel to Edmonton to play in the 2nd Annual Woodall Cup

Members of the media are invited to attend an event this afternoon announcing the 2nd Woodall Cup and First Responders Day. Claire Woodall and her two sons, Gabe and Callen, along with representatives from FC Edmonton, EPS Blues, British Selects, and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) members will gather at Constable Dan Woodall Park at 1:30 p.m.

Five Greater Manchester Police members are in Edmonton to play in the Woodall Cup match, and to join in celebrating and remembering all first responders. Players will be kicking a ball around with the Woodall boys at the park, warming up for Sunday’s game. 

The British Selects, a team made up of British ex-pats, will be taking on the EPS Blue at Clarke Stadium on Sunday, September 11^th, right after the FC Edmonton regular season game against Miami FC. Proceeds from the Woodall Cup match will go to the Woodall Foundation and be donated to the Zebra Child Protection Centre and the family of William Breen.

William (Billy) Breen died unexpectedly in 2015, leaving behind a wife and young family. Billy was a great friend to the soccer community, and played for the British Selects in the first Woodall Cup. “I'm amazed at the dedication FCE, the police and the ex-pats have continued to have with the Woodall Cup,” says Claire Woodall. “Now we can pay it forward and help others. It truly warms my heart.”

On June 8th, 2016, 35-year-old Constable Dan Woodall died in the line of duty while executing a warrant in southwest Edmonton. Dan’s love of ‘football’ led to FC Edmonton hosting the inaugural Woodall Cup on July 26^th, 2015 with proceeds going to Dan’s family.

This year, FC Edmonton is saluting all first responders by declaring September 11^th First Responders Day. “This September 11th we will remember all first responders,” says Jay Ball, General Manager for FC Edmonton. “It’s an opportunity for FC Edmonton and our fans to show appreciation to all of our first responders for their tremendous dedication and service to the Edmonton Community.”

EPS Recruitment team goes first and goal with Huskies

The EPS Recruit Selection Unit and Recruit Training Unit are hosting an Officer Skills Team Builder for the Edmonton Huskies Football Club. Huskie players will be put through an EPS obstacle course that will test their physical and mental capabilities.

The EPS-organized event will be held at the EPS William Nixon Training Centre (Outdoor Range), 12950 – 9 St. NE this afternoon, Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Approximately 70 Huskie football players are expected to participate.

Media members are invited to arrive and cover the event beginning at 4:45 p.m.

Huskie players, coaches and members of the EPS Recuiting and Training staff will be available for media interviews.
