Community Action Team targets crime and disorder in Dunluce

The Edmonton Police Service Community Action Team (CAT) and officers from Northwest Division are working to suppress and prevent crime in the Dunluce neighbourhood this week.

The community will see an increased police presence from June 22 to June 25, 2016 as officers target suspicious activity and traffic offences, conduct proactive investigations and address disorder in the area, such as graffiti mischief.

Officers will also connect with citizens during door-to-door visits in the neighbourhood, with a focus on educating the public about preventing theft from vehicles.

“CAT deployments give us the opportunity to speak with community residents face-to-face, answer questions and listen to concerns,” says Const. Mike Dahl with the EPS Community Action Team. “This week in Dunluce, we’re reminding citizens to take steps to protect their property.”

“Quick precautionary measures – always locking your vehicle, removing the keys, never leaving a car running and unattended, securing valuables out of sight – help to reduce crime in the area.”

Members of the public are invited to join the EPS for a barbecue Thursday evening. Crime prevention materials will be available from a number of EPS partners and officers will arrange a soccer game.

Cause of death yet to be confirmed in city’s latest homicide

The Medical Examiner has determined that Armando Cosmea-Aspillago sustained stab wounds during a life-ending assault Friday evening, but announced it will undertake further analysis before formally confirming the cause of death in the city’s latest homicide.

Homicide investigators have since charged Roberto Robles, 73, with second-degree murder and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon, in the death of 38-year-old Armando Cosmea-Aspillaga.

This is Edmonton’s 24^th homicide of 2016.

Pedestrian deceased, suspect charged following hit and run collision

A 73-year-old man has died after he was struck by a vehicle in a hit and run collision that occurred yesterday afternoon in southeast Edmonton.

Edmonton Police Service officers responded to Mill Woods Road South and 48 Street at approximately 4:05 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2016. It is reported a male pedestrian was crossing Mill Woods Road northbound in a crosswalk when he was struck by a black Jeep Wrangler travelling eastbound on Mill Woods Road.

Emergency Medical Services responded to the collision and the pedestrian was declared deceased.

The vehicle failed to remain at the scene of the collision. The Jeep was located in the area of 36 Street and 12A Avenue shortly thereafter, and the 38-year-old male driver of the vehicle was taken into custody without incident.

The alleged driver of the Jeep, Erick Garcia, is facing four charges: dangerous driving causing death, impaired operation causing death, exceed 80 mg % causing death and criminal hit and run causing death.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the ongoing investigation.

Police investigating suspicious death in downtown Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death that occurred last night in the downtown area.

Downtown Division patrol members responded to a call to assist EMS personnel at approximately 11:45 p.m., Sunday, June 19, 2016, outside of a hotel near 101 Street and Bellamy Hill.

Upon arrival, police found a male lying on the ground suffering from critical injuries. Paramedics rushed the male to hospital where he later died.

Homicide detectives have since been called out to assist. No one is in custody at this time.

Homicide detectives charge 73-year-old man with second-degree murder

Homicide detectives have charged a 73-year-old Edmonton man with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his son-in-law Friday evening in southwest Edmonton.

Roberto Robles, 73, is charged with second-degree murder and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon, in the death of 38-year-old Armando Cosmea-Aspillaga.

An autopsy to determine cause of death is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Police investigating suspicious death in southwest Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death that occurred earlier this evening in southwest Edmonton.

Southwest Division patrol members responded to a domestic dispute at a residence near 53 Avenue and Whitemud Road, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Friday, June 17, 2016.

Upon arrival officers found a deceased male inside the residence.

Homicide detectives have since taken over the scene, and are interviewing witnesses that were inside the residence at the time of the incident.

An autopsy has yet to be scheduled. Further details will be communicated when they become available.

Help Free our Finest for Special Olympics

The Free our Finest charity event for Special Olympics Alberta begins today at 11:00 a.m.! We need your help to free Edmonton law enforcement officers who will be living on the rooftop of Cabela’s for 53 hours.

During the weekend-long event, law enforcement personnel and Special Olympic athletes will be asking Cabela’s shoppers to make donations to “Free our Finest” from the roof. All money raised goes to athletes in Special Olympics. This year’s fundraising goal is $30,000.

“We as law enforcement officers often face challenges in our jobs, but the Special Olympics athletes face challenges every day in their lives, which is a true inspiration to us”, Constable Amanda Trenchard expresses. “As officers we are very proud to carry the message for these often vulnerable people and we give them the respect they truly deserve. We should all live by the Special Olympics Athletes’ oath, ‘Let me win but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’ ”

There are family-fun activities at the Cabela’s south Edmonton location at 6150 Currents Drive, including the EPS canine unit on Saturday, junior officer training and many other activities you won’t want to miss!

Fundraising activities including Canine unit, various displays, law enforcement vehicles from the past and present, and bar-b-que (with proceeds to the AB Special Olympics).

Sunday, June 19: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm: Fundraising activities and displays continue.

4:00 pm: You have Freed our Finest! Officers come down from the rooftop of Cabela’s.

BACKGROUND:

This is one fundraising event under the umbrella of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The torch run is a part of an international movement, the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics.

All money raised from this event stays in Alberta and 50 % goes directly to Special Olympics Edmonton.

Special Olympics Alberta offers programs in 114 communities around the province through 32 affiliates, each with its own volunteer management committee and volunteer coaches. There are over 1,200 volunteers working with over 3,000 athletes in year round programs.
