Police seek assistance to ID man allegedly involved in sexual assault

The Edmonton Police Service is releasing a composite sketch to the public to help identify a suspect in an alleged sexual assault that occurred on March 30, 2016.

Police responded to a reported sexual assault around 11:20 p.m., on Wednesday, Mar. 20, 2016, in the area of 111 Avenue and 91 Street. It was reported that a female in her early 20s was approached by an intoxicated male, unknown to her, and then allegedly sexually assaulted.   

The woman fled on foot from the male suspect, who was last seen heading east on 111 Avenue.

The suspect is described as an aboriginal male of medium build, between 5’7”- 5’9” in height, with a mustache and goatee. He is believed to be in his mid-20s and was last seen wearing a black sweater and dark pants.

Police charge third person in 2015 homicide of Deng Tong

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has laid first-degree murder charges against a third man in relation to the stabbing death of Deng Mathew Garang Tong, 23, of Edmonton.

On Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the EPS responded to a weapons complaint in the area of 102 Street and 107 Avenue where they found two males suffering from stab wounds.

Further information directed patrol officers one block away to an apartment at 103 Street and 107 Avenue, where they discovered Tong, a third male, suffering from stab wounds.

EMS treated and transported the 23-year-old male to hospital where he died. Police believe the two incidents were related.

Clinton Robert Kailek, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder (x3) and aggravated assault (x3).

Billy Joe Nelson, 37, and Tyler Strathdee, 27, were also charged in relation to this homicide last month (Mar. 2016).

This was Edmonton’s third homicide of 2015.

Assist to locate domestic violence suspect: Jayden Janvier

The Edmonton Police Service has issued warrants for a repeat domestic violence offender.

Jayden Janvier, 22, was last seen leaving a southwest Edmonton residence at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2016, following an alleged assault on his estranged common law spouse. The accused was last seen travelling on foot near the Century Park LRT Station.

Investigators have issued 12 warrants in connection with four separate incidents of domestic violence that are alleged to have occurred in 2015-16 involving his estranged spouse, including uttering death threats following the most recent assault on Monday afternoon.

Man wanted on Canada-wide warrant turns himself in

The man allegedly involved in the shooting death of Amin Mohammed Abdullahi, 30, turned himself into police this morning.

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section issued a Canada-wide warrant last week (Mar. 30, 2016) for the arrest of Arman Dhillon, 21, after Abdullahi was shot to death outside a lounge in the area of 81 Avenue and 105 Street in the early hours of Sunday, Mar. 27, 2016.

Dhillon is facing a total of 21 charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder while using a restricted firearm, aggravated assault, using a firearm in commission of offence and a number of other breaches.

The Edmonton Police Service is taking to social media for the next several weeks to educate the public about when to call 911 and when to call the non-emergency line.

“We are once again trying to raise awareness about proper use of 911, as we continue to see errant calls flood our emergency line,” says Insp. Graham Hogg of EPS Police Communications Branch. “The majority of these calls come from citizens who don’t know the difference between an emergency and a non-emergency.”

The Police Service first launched its “Make the Right Call” campaign in 2012, with transit and newspaper ads, and an information brochure in 2013 that was mailed to each home in the city.

From April through June this year, the public will also see some ads on buses, LRTs and transit stations, but the main medium will be the EPS’s social media accounts, which are now key communication tools between the service and the public. Combined, the service has more than 122,000 followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“We hope our social media followers will share and re-Tweet our messages so we can reach as many citizens as possible,” says Insp. Hogg. “We are asking all residents of Edmonton to know the difference between an emergency and a non-emergency, and when it’s appropriate to call 911. By making the right call, you may literally be helping save a life.”

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram followers can share and re-Tweet EPS’s posts with the hashtag #EPS377.

So far this year, the EPS 911 call centre has received 90,034 calls and 36,617 of these calls were not an emergency. In 2015, the EPS had 388,736 calls into 911, and 152,320 of these calls were not emergencies.

“We don’t want to deter people from calling 911 when they really need to, but we want them to remember that not all calls are emergencies and that dialing #377 from their mobile phone will connect them with the non-emergency line,” says Insp. Hogg.

Witnesses sought in hit-and-run pedestrian collision on Whyte Avenue

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking witnesses to a hit-and-run collision involving a female pedestrian on Whyte Avenue that occurred on March 9th.

Southwest Division patrol members responded to the call at approximately 1 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, near Whyte Avenue and 106 Street.

It was reported to police that an 18-year-old woman was walking westbound in the middle of Whyte Avenue near 106 Street, when a white 2014 Ford Escape that was also westbound on Whyte Ave allegedly struck the woman, before fleeing the scene.

The pedestrian was treated and transported to hospital by EMS paramedics with non-life threating injuries. Investigators believe the vehicle was being driven by a 29-year-old male, who also had an unidentified passenger with him at the time of the collision.

Police dismantle drug operation, marijuana and weapons seized

Officers from Downtown and Southwest Division dismantled a drug operation and seized more than $30,000 in marijuana and shatter, a concentrated marijuana derivative, during a search warrant executed last week; two individuals are now facing charges.

The Edmonton Police Service conducted an investigation that culminated on Mar. 24, 2016 with the execution of a warrant at a residence in the area of 19 Avenue and 120A Street in southwest Edmonton.

Inside, officers discovered a variety of drugs and paraphernalia, including material that indicated a room of the residence was being used for drug production.

“There’s a high risk of explosion associated with the production of shatter,” says Acting Sgt. Curtis Maron with Downtown Division. “With the help of our colleagues in Southwest Division, we were able to seize a significant quantity of the drug and shut down a dangerous operation.”

Police seized the following items from the residence:

• 1,364 grams of marijuana (approximate street value $13,680)
• 186 grams of shatter (approximate street value $18,640), including various candies coated with shatter
• Drug trafficking paraphernalia
• Drug production equipment
• Psilocybin and hasish (approximate street value $400 total)
• Two replica firearms
• Several edged weapons

A man and a woman were arrested in connection with the investigation.

Dustin Blayney, 26, and Zlata Delanovic, 26, each face 12 charges: possession for the purpose of trafficking (x4), production of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property under $5,000, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition (x3) and possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public (x3).
