Police investigate BASE jumping incident in downtown Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a BASE jumping incident that occurred last night (Monday, Mar. 9, 2015) in downtown Edmonton.

At approximately 11:40 p.m., police received a call that a male had jumped from a construction crane in the area of 86 Street and Jasper Avenue.

Downtown Division officers and Air 1 responded to the area. Police believe three males in their twenties broke into a construction area and proceeded to BASE jump off of a construction crane. Shortly after police responded, three men were taken into custody.

“Individuals who engage in this type of behavior are making a selfish decision that negatively impacts the rest of the city,” says Supt. Kevin Galvin with EPS Downtown Division. “These people have little regard for the number of police resources that are dispatched to this type of call – a situation where it was believed someone was in distress. These types of incidents pull police resources that are already overstretched away from those who do require assistance.”

The investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending.

Driver of snow removal vehicle charged in fatal pedestrian collision

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Unit has completed the investigation into a fatal pedestrian collision involving a snow removal vehicle that occurred in northwest Edmonton on Jan. 28, 2015.

Douglas Zaboroski, 51, has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failing to stop at a red light under the Traffic Safety Act.

Background:

Edmonton Police Service Northwest Division Patrol officers responded to the report of a collision at 134 Avenue and 113A Street at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015. Police believe a female pedestrian attempted to cross 134 Avenue from north to south when she was struck by a snow removal vehicle. The pedestrian was treated and transported to hospital by EMS, where she remained until her passing on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015. The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit took over the investigation. This was Edmonton’s third pedestrian fatality of 2015.

Homicide detectives investigating death of male in west Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating the suspicious death of a male this morning on the city’s west side. Northwest Division patrol members initially responded to a call of shots fired at approximately 3:24 a.m. today, Monday, March 9, 2015. Upon arrival, EPS members found the body of a deceased male, who appears to be in his 20s, outside of a business near 12520 118 Avenue.



Homicide Section detectives have since been called out to the scene and have taken over the investigation.

Police charge two Ontario women in connection with commercial sexual exploitation

The Edmonton Police Service Vice Section has charged two women from Ontario in connection with the alleged commercial sexual exploitation of another female involved in the sex industry.

Between September 2013 and September 2014, it is alleged the female suspects financially benefited from the sale of sexual services conducted by a female complainant in this matter. These services occurred in Alberta.

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, the Edmonton Police Service arrested the suspects in Edmonton without incident.

Nadine Brown, 38, from Niagara Falls, Ontario and Yolanda Mohabeer, 20, from Pickering, Ontario have been charged with:

• Trafficking in persons


• Living on the avails of prostitution of an adult


• Assault


• Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm

As this investigation is historic in nature, the charges laid in this matter are pre-Bill C-36 legislation.

The investigation continues, and the Edmonton Police Service is liaising with police agencies in other jurisdictions, as the EPS Vice Section believes similar offences may have occurred in other provinces.

“We are encouraging members of the public to come forward and share information they have about these suspects,” says Staff Sgt. James Clover with the EPS Vice Section. “The EPS would also like to speak with anyone who has information in relation to the exploitation of those working in the sex industry.”

Young woman sexually assaulted in north Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating the sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman that occurred yesterday evening in the city’s north end.

On Tuesday, Mar. 3, 2015 at approximately 8:15 p.m. patrol officers from Northwest Division responded to a sexual assault call.

It was reported that the woman was walking in the area of 101 Street and 128 Avenue when a male approached her, produced a weapon, and forced her into a nearby alley where she was then assaulted. The male then fled the area prior to police arrival.

The suspect is described as Aboriginal male, average height, 160 lbs., medium build, with an approximate age of mid-twenties, dressed in dark clothing. Additional descriptors may follow as the Sexual Assault Section continues to conduct their investigation.

Missing man located

The Edmonton Police Service has located the 21-year-old male who was last seen on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015 in northeast Edmonton.

The man was safely located this morning (Tuesday, Mar. 3, 2015) in southwest Edmonton.

Police investigating single vehicle collision on Anthony Henday Drive

The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section is investigating a single vehicle collision on Anthony Henday Drive that sent two men to hospital this evening (Sunday, Mar. 1, 2015) with serious injuries.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 1, 2015, an Audi A4 was travelling westbound on Anthony Henday Drive, south of the bridge between 184 Street (Cameron Heights Drive overpass) and Terwillegar Drive. It was reported the vehicle lost control, crossed over to the eastbound lanes of Anthony Henday Drive and struck a light standard.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. One man was airlifted to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance and the second man was treated and transported to hospital by EMS. Both men are in their mid-twenties.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit continues to investigate. Speed is believed to be a factor in the collision.

Anthony Henday Drive eastbound between 184 Street and Terwillegar Drive will be closed for the next several hours. Westbound traffic has been reduced to one lane. Motorists are asked to avoid the area at this time.
