Al-Shabab video threat against West Edmonton Mall

The Edmonton Police Service in conjunction with the RCMP, other policing agencies and federal authorities are investigating the report of the Al-Shabab video which encourages action to be taken against shopping malls around the world, including West Edmonton Mall.

“At this time, we have determined there is no imminent threat to Edmonton, Canada, or its citizens,” says Deputy Chief Brian Simpson. “The safety and security of the public is our first and foremost priority.”

The Edmonton Police Service takes any threat to our country’s national security very seriously.

Although West Edmonton Mall was identified in the video, the EPS has shared information and is working closely with all malls and their security detail within the city, including West Edmonton Mall.

The EPS is also working closely with the community and encourage anyone to report suspicious activity to the police.

The EPS will continue to work closely with its law enforcement partners and investigate threats posed to Edmontonians to ensure Canada remains safe.

Four stabbed; one other dead in overnight weapons complaint

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating an overnight weapons complaint resulted in one dead and four others in hospital.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. the EPS responded to a weapons complaint in the area of 102 Street and 107 Ave where they found two males suffering from stab wounds. EMS treated and transported the two men to hospital where they are currently stable but in serious condition. From there, investigations led Homicide investigators one block further to an apartment at 103 Street and 107 Avenue where they discovered a third male suffering from stab wounds as well. EMS transported the 23-year-old male to hospital where he died.

Subsequent investigations led detectives to find two additional males in hospital, also suffering from stab wounds. Police believe these events are related.

An autopsy has not yet been scheduled.

Homicide continues to investigate.

Officer charged with dangerous driving

An Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer was charged today in relation to a collision which took place on Oct. 08, 2014.

The constable was on duty and responding to a high priority call for service when the collision occurred.

Const. Ashlee Shepansky, a 6-year member with the EPS, was charged with dangerous driving pursuant to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada. The constable is currently assigned to administrative duties.

The charges follow an in-depth investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch. As the matter is currently before the courts, the EPS will not be commenting further.

Police confirm second homicide of the year

On Tuesday, February 10th the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the 24-year-old female found deceased in a downtown apartment on Monday evening.

As a result of the autopsy, the Edmonton Police Service has confirmed the death to be the city’s second occurrence of homicide in 2015.

The deceased has been identified as Lena Steinhauer, 24 years of age.

Female found deceased in downtown apartment suite

On Monday, Feb. 9, 2015 at approximately 7:30 p.m., police attended an apartment in the area of 112 Avenue and 95A Street after a caller reported locating an unconscious person.

Upon arrival of the Northwest Division patrol officers, a 24-year-old female was found deceased within an apartment suite.

Due to the initial observations on scene, the Homicide Section was called-out to continue with the investigation, and the death is being treated as suspicious.

The autopsy is scheduled for 1 p.m. today (February 10).

At this point, police have identified the deceased female; however a next of kin notification has not been made. Efforts continue to identify and locate the family of the deceased.

Pedestrian suffers life threatening injuries after being struck by snow removal vehicle

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a collision between a female pedestrian and a snow removal vehicle that occurred earlier this evening (Jan. 28, 2015) in northwest Edmonton.

Northwest Division patrol officers responded to the report of a collision at 134 Avenue and 113A Street at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015. It was reported that a female pedestrian was walking westbound on the 134 Avenue south sidewalk as a snow removal vehicle was travelling eastbound on 134 Avenue.

The pedestrian allegedly attempted to cross 113A Street westbound in the marked crosswalk. It was reported that the snow removal vehicle, equipped with a snow blower, made a right-hand turn to travel south on 113A Street and struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk.

Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and treated and transported the 39-year-old female pedestrian to hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver of the snow removal vehicle, a 53-year-old male, did not sustain injuries.

Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision. The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the ongoing investigation. Charges have not been laid at this time.

EPS Hate Crimes looking for suspects in graffiti incident

The Edmonton Police Service Hate Crime Detail is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying suspects in connection with an anti-Semitic graffiti incident that occurred in southwest Edmonton over the weekend.

Southwest Division patrol officers responded to Wolf Willow Road and Wanyandi Road at approximately 11 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 after it was reported that the exterior of a synagogue in the area had been tagged with hate crime graffiti.

Upon arrival, officers found anti-Semitic phrases spray-painted on the south-facing wall and northeast corner of the building.

The building was tagged in purple paint using block letters approximately one foot in size.

“No organization, establishment or individual should be victim to this type of crime,” says Cst. Daniel Woodall with the EPS Hate Crime Detail. “We are actively working with the synagogue and community partners to bring resolution to this incident.”
