At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, Northeast Division patrol officers responded to Yellowhead Trail and Victoria Trail to investigate a reported single vehicle roll-over involving a possible impaired driver.
On arrival police confirmed that a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette was travelling westbound on Yellowhead Trail when it lost control and rolled over on its roof, just underneath the Victoria Trail overpass.
Northeast Division patrol officers initiated an impaired driving investigation and MCIU continued the investigation, which revealed evidence of excessive speed and alcohol as being factors in the collision.
The 41-year-old female passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased on-scene by attending paramedics.
The 47-year-old male driver was extricated and transported to hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.
Allan Dean Balay is charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death. Additional charges are pending.
At 9:15 a.m. today (Friday, Oct. 10, 2014) members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Wellington County Crime Unit along with the Wellington County Emergency Response Team arrested the accused in assistance to the EPS.
At the time of arrest, the accused was wanted on Canada-wide warrants for first degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
Daryl Pierre Rivest, 42, will be transported back to Edmonton to face the charges.
Detectives continue to investigate.
Samuels died after sustaining multiple stab wounds to his body in the early morning hours at the former Hex Lounge, near 107 Street and 104 Avenue.
“These are proactive initiatives that the Edmonton Police Service regularly undertakes throughout the year, in an attempt to confront the issue of human trafficking head-on,” said Det. David Schening, of the EPS Vice Section. “The trafficking of human beings, many of whom are lured into the sex trade industry, is not something that just occurs internationally, but also regionally within our own country.”
That theory was reinforced during a two-day hotel sting operation carried out by the EPS Vice Section, Oct. 1-2, 2014, which focused on providing “intervention and exit strategies” for women involved in the sex trade industry.
“We did not come across any under-age girls involved in prostitution this time, which was positive, but we did notice a growing trend of women being transported inter-provincially from eastern Canada,” explained Schening.
Vice Section members interviewed 16 women during the two-day undercover operation, 15 of whom were from Toronto and Montreal.
“We want to let these women know that they have options – options that could end up saving their lives,” Schening said adding, “Our role is to provide intervention and exit strategies for these individuals, and to let them know that they always have somewhere to turn and someone they can trust.”
Police services representing 26 cities and towns across the country participated in Operation Northern Spotlight.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., Oct. 5, 2014, it was reported that a vehicle travelling northbound on Rabbit Hill Road collided with a male pedestrian in the crosswalk at Hodgson Boulevard. The pedestrian is believed to have been crossing Rabbit Hill road from the southeast corner and walking toward the southwest corner in a marked crosswalk, when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Witnesses told police the vehicle, which is described as being a small white or silver sedan, was last seen driving northbound on Rabbit Hill Road., after colliding with the pedestrian.
The 46-year-old male was treated on scene by paramedics and transported to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition with multiple injuries.

“It appears Macneil had just recently returned from Nova Soctia to work in Alberta and unfortunately lost his life when a drug deal went bad,” says Det. Dan Collins with Homicide Section. “A team of EPS homicide investigators have been working hard over the last six months to collect substantial evidence to lay charges against two suspects.”
On Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, homicide detectives charged Daryle Victor Kidder, 36, with second degree murder, possession of an offensive weapon and breach of recognizance. Kidder remains in custody and is awaiting a bail hearing.
The investigation continues with the Edmonton Police Service asking for the public’s assistance in locating Stephanie Pricilla Laderoute, 34. She is facing charges and is wanted on warrants for second degree murder and accessory after the fact. Laderoute has been known to dye and/or shave her hair and may look different than the photo below.

EPS Homicide Detectives are investigating the death of a 34-year-old male, which is believed to have occurred in a parking lot in the area of 168 Street and 118 Avenue on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.
Investigations reveal that an altercation took place in the parking lot between two men just after 2 a.m. this morning, which led to one of the males being stabbed. The stabbing victim was treated at the scene but died a short time later in hospital.
The Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy on the victim of a stabbing which occurred on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in a parking lot in the area of 168 Street and 118 Avenue.
It has been determined that Ashley John George Macneil, 34, died from a stab wound.
Members of the EPS Arson Unit took over the investigation shortly after the March 15, 2014 blaze, which caused an estimated $6M in total damages to a new condo development near 10 Avenue and 173 Street.
More than six months later, an investigative team comprised of more than 60 EPS members from multiple sections, arrested and charged Eric Gould, 28, a construction framer, with arson, possession incendiary material (x2), break and enter, conspiracy, possession of stolen property, public mischief, fraud, weapons charges and mischief.
Jeremy Thibert, 22, is charged with arson, possession incendiary material, break and enter, theft under $5,000 and conspiracy.
“This was a complex investigation that lasted over six months,” said Staff Sgt. Terry Innes, of the EPS Arson Unit. These arrests were achieved as a result of the extensive time commitment and excellent police work by dozens of members from specialized areas across the Edmonton Police Service.”
Gould is also facing another charge of arson in connection with a 2011 fire at a residential building site in Pigeon Lake. Gould was employed as a framer on the Pigeon Lake building site, at that time.
