Police remind home builders, tradespeople, to take steps to prevent theft

The Edmonton Police Service is reminding those employed in the home building industry to take proactive steps to prevent theft, on the heels of ongoing construction site incidents.

New neighbourhoods in Southwest Division have experienced upwards of 21 construction site thefts since March 1, 2019. Thieves are targeting everything from new appliances, custom kitchen cabinets to gas fireplaces, lumber, flooring materials, doors and insulation to tools left in locked trailers by tradespeople. In three incidents, larger equipment including skid steers were also stolen.

The new southwest neighbourhoods being targeted include Desrochers (north of 41 Avenue, southwest and west of James Mowatt Trail), Chappelle (north of 41 Avenue and west of 141 Street), The Uplands (east and west of 199 Street, north of Maskekosihk Trail), Riverview (south of Maskekosihk Trail, east and west of 199 Street) and Windermere (near 175 Street and 12 to 13 avenues).

Thieves have also been targeting infill construction sites, including homes being built in Belgravia, McKernan, Strathcona and Queen Alexandra, with a total of 14 thefts being reported to police during the same timeline.

Investigators are encouraging contractors to take their tools home at the end of each shift, and prior to weekends, and home builders to install surveillance cameras throughout their sites and/or to hire security personnel to conduct site patrols. Police are also encouraging residents in surrounding communities to contact police if they notice any suspicious behaviour occurring on new home construction sites.

The thefts typically occurred overnight and on weekends.

Anyone with information about these thefts and/or those involved in committing these crimes is asked to contact police at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at
