ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting

At approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018 the Edmonton Police Service was conducting surveillance on a vehicle carrying a male with a number of outstanding warrants and who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

With the assistance of the EPS Tactical Unit, a traffic stop was conducted in the area of 79 Avenue and 71 Street, and two occupants of the vehicle exited without incident. The male with outstanding warrants was non-compliant and remained in the vehicle. An incident took place between the suspect male and responding officers. Officers subsequently discharged their service weapons and struck the 34-year-old male.

EMS responded, treated and transported the male to hospital where he was declared deceased. The two passengers who exited the vehicle were not injured.

No EPS officers were injured in this incident.

The EPS will not be providing further comment as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has since taken the lead in this investigation.
