Pedestrian suffers life threatening injuries after being struck by snow removal vehicle

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a collision between a female pedestrian and a snow removal vehicle that occurred earlier this evening (Jan. 28, 2015) in northwest Edmonton.

Northwest Division patrol officers responded to the report of a collision at 134 Avenue and 113A Street at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015. It was reported that a female pedestrian was walking westbound on the 134 Avenue south sidewalk as a snow removal vehicle was travelling eastbound on 134 Avenue.


The pedestrian allegedly attempted to cross 113A Street westbound in the marked crosswalk. It was reported that the snow removal vehicle, equipped with a snow blower, made a right-hand turn to travel south on 113A Street and struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk.


Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and treated and transported the 39-year-old female pedestrian to hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver of the snow removal vehicle, a 53-year-old male, did not sustain injuries.


Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision. The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the ongoing investigation. Charges have not been laid at this time.

EPS Hate Crimes looking for suspects in graffiti incident

The Edmonton Police Service Hate Crime Detail is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying suspects in connection with an anti-Semitic graffiti incident that occurred in southwest Edmonton over the weekend.

Southwest Division patrol officers responded to Wolf Willow Road and Wanyandi Road at approximately 11 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 after it was reported that the exterior of a synagogue in the area had been tagged with hate crime graffiti.


Upon arrival, officers found anti-Semitic phrases spray-painted on the south-facing wall and northeast corner of the building.


The building was tagged in purple paint using block letters approximately one foot in size.


“No organization, establishment or individual should be victim to this type of crime,” says Cst. Daniel Woodall with the EPS Hate Crime Detail. “We are actively working with the synagogue and community partners to bring resolution to this incident.”

The 23-year-old woman who was last seen on Dec. 28 has been located by police. Tigisti Kahsay Bayru was located unharmed earlier this evening in Toronto, Ontario. Thank you to all the media outlets for their assistance.

Medical Examiner’s Office confirms death of male in Blue Quill neighbourhood is first homicide of 2015

The Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the death of a 36-year-old male in a southwest Edmonton neighbourhood on Jan. 21, 2015, was a homicide. Homicide detectives continue to investigate the death of Paul Murray Grandbois, but are not releasing the manner in which he died at this time for investigative purposes.

Police investigating suspicious death in Southwest Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating the suspicious death of a male in Southwest Edmonton this morning.

Southwest Division patrol members responded to a call to assist EMS at approximately 6:40 a.m, Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015, in the neighbourhood of Blue Quill, near 25 Avenue and 120 Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of an unidentified deceased male lying on the road.



The Medical Examiner’s Office has been contacted. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled.

Pedestrian passes away in hospital after collision in downtown Edmonton

A 72-year-old male has passed away in hospital, following a pedestrian collision that occurred in downtown Edmonton over the weekend.

At approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, Downtown Division officers responded to a collision in the area of 105 Avenue and 101 Street. A male pedestrian allegedly attempted to cross 101 Street eastbound when he was struck by a Volkswagen SUV that had entered the intersection on a green light. The SUV was driven by a female motorist.


The pedestrian was treated and transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.


The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the ongoing investigation. Charges have not been laid. Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision.


This is the second pedestrian fatality of 2015.

Supplied composite sketch released to identify downtown assault suspect

The Edmonton Police Service is releasing a supplied composite sketch to help identify a suspect in an alleged assault and theft that occurred in downtown Edmonton in December 2014.

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, Edmonton Police Service Downtown Division officers responded to the report of an assault at approximately 1:15 p.m. in the area of 109 Street and 100 Avenue. A 30-year-old female was taking garbage to a dumpster behind an apartment building in the area when she allegedly encountered a male crouching inside the dumpster.


It was reported that after a short verbal altercation, the male jumped out of the dumpster, assaulted the female and stole her mobile phone. Police believe the male fled west from 109 Street on foot.


The female sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of the assault and was treated and transported to hospital. Following the incident, she had a composite sketch of the suspect created and then provided the image to the Edmonton Police Service.


The suspect is described as an Aboriginal youth male (possibly 15 to 17-years-old), approximately 5’6” tall and 150 lbs. with medium length, dark hark and a thin moustache. He was wearing a plaid jacket at the time of the alleged assault.

Male charged in connection with shooting in Millbourne area

An Edmonton man is facing multiple firearm-related charges in connection with an incident Monday afternoon, which left a 41-year-old woman in hospital with a gun-shot wound. Southeast Division patrol officers responded to a residence near Millbourne Road and 66 Street at approximately 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, 2015. Police received a report from EMS personnel concerning a 41-year-old female who appeared to have sustained a gun-shot wound. Members of the EPS Tactical Section and Canine Unit were also called out to the scene.



Upon arrival, police determined the suspect, who was known to the complainant, had already fled the scene. Police responded to another nearby address, where the 20-year-old male suspect was located and arrested.



Officers subsequently uncovered a handgun at the same address, while executing a search warrant. Investigators have yet to determine whether the handgun was the firearm used in the incident. The complainant has since underwent surgery and remains in serious condition in hospital.



Omar Leon Bernel, 20, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, use of a firearm while committing an offence, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized (x2) and carrying a concealed weapon.

Good Samaritans box in pedestrian hit-and-run suspect on Whyte

Several motorists played a significant role this evening, by assisting police in apprehending a suspect allegedly involve in a pedestrian hit-and-run collision near 101 Street and Whyte Avenue.

Southwest Division patrol members initially responded to a traffic collision call at approximately 5:52 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015. It was reported that a White Dodge pick-up truck struck another vehicle from behind, while travelling eastbound on 63 Avenue.



The driver of the pick-up truck is alleged to have fled the scene of that hit-and-run collision, before travelling north on Gateway Blvd. with the complainant following. The driver of the suspect vehicle then continued eastbound on Whyte Avenue, where it was reported that the male suspect driver then struck a 63-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing Whyte Avenue at 101 Street.



Witnesses told police that the suspect driver then fled that pedestrian collision scene, before being boxed in by several motorists just west of 99 Street on Whyte Avenue.


Troy Clayton Tessman, 35, was taken into custody, and multiple charges are pending.



The male pedestrian was taken to hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.


The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigations Unit has since taken over the investigation.
