Youth charged following break-and-enter, firearms seizure

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a male youth from Spruce Grove following a break-and-enter to an Edmonton business earlier this week.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, police responded to the report of a break-and-enter to a business in the area of 115 Avenue and 149 Street. It was reported to police that a male suspect had entered the firearms business and was removing a variety of items, including firearms, ammunition and military surplus items. The suspect then reportedly left the stolen items in front of the business and was seen by police fleeing the area with a firearm.

With assistance from EPS Air One and the EPS Tactical Unit, West Division officers arrested the suspect in a nearby industrial compound. Officers also located a reported stolen vehicle in the area that they believe was used during the theft and contained a loaded firearm.

Following a thorough investigation, and with assistance from the Stony Plain RCMP, officers searched a residence in Spruce Grove where additional stolen firearms and ammunition were seized. Investigators believe the male may also be linked to similar incidents that took place in the Spruce Grove area in 2018.

In total, officers seized 30 firearms, more than 2000 rounds of ammunition and a variety of military surplus items, including bayonets and knives.

A 17-year-old male has subsequently been charged with 20 offences, including break-and-enter to steal firearms (x3), theft of motor vehicles and other firearms related charges.

Officers continue to investigate.

Man sought by EPS for firearm-related offences located in Saskatchewan; police lay charges against second suspect

Police have charged two men in relation to firearm and kidnapping-offences earlier this month.

On Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at approximately 7:30 a.m. police were dispatched to a suite in the area of 118 Avenue and 95 Street regarding a mischief complaint. When officers arrived, they observed a broken glass door. Upon further investigation, officers located several bullet holes throughout the apartment; however no one was located inside the suite.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at approximately 4:30 a.m. numerous rounds were allegedly fired outside an establishment in the area of 124 Avenue and 142 Street, striking at least one vehicle in the parking lot. Multiple suspects were reportedly witnessed fleeing the scene in a Hyundai Elantra.

Upon further investigation, officers determined that the male driver of the Hyundai Elantra was approached by the male suspects involved in the altercation and was allegedly ordered at gunpoint to drive them to a different location. The male driver complied and suffered non-life-threatening injuries in relation to this incident, but did not require treatment from EMS. Investigators do not believe the driver was known to the suspects.

Investigators believe both incidents to be connected.

Abdi Kafor Mahamud Hirsi, 32, is charged with robbery with a firearm (x2), kidnapping with a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a restricted weapon, as well as several other firearm-related offences.

Ahmed Osman, 30, was also charged with robbery with a firearm, kidnapping with a firearm and breach of recognizance (x2).

With the assistance of the Moose Jaw Police Service, the two male suspects were taken into custody in Saskatchewan yesterday (Jan. 28, 2019). Osman is charged in relation to the incident on Jan. 19, 2019, while Hirsi is charged in relation to both incidents.

Police charge man after significant amount of property stolen from various residential construction sites

Police have laid several charges against a man following a lengthy stolen property investigation.

In October of 2018, Northwest Division investigators became aware of several residential break-ins and thefts to newly built, unoccupied homes across the city. Upon further investigation, officers identified a male suspect believed to be involved in these crimes and conducted search warrants at two residences. Both dwellings, one in the area of 135 Avenue and 127 Street and the other in the area of 118 Avenue and 44 Street, turned up a significant amount of property; including three stolen utility trailers and enough stolen appliances and construction materials to fill four cargo vans.

Police believe several new subdivisions across the city were targeted, including: Rapperswill, Griesbach, Oxford, Rosenthal, Cy Becker, McConachie, Crystallina, Webber Greens, Walker and Edgemont.

"We’re asking citizens to keep their eyes open to any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods," says Sgt. Robert Nayowski with Northwest Division. "Generally speaking, contractors work during daylight, so in the event you notice suspicious individual(s) coming and going from newly constructed homes at unusual hours of the night and loading property into vehicles - we would like to hear from you."

"The other important factor is reporting these crimes to police in a timely manner. The sooner we know this is happening in a specific neighborhood, the more prompt and proactive we can be as a police service."

As a result of this investigation, police seized:

Three utility trailers

Stolen F-150 truck

Kitchen ranges, granite counters and cabinets

Light fixtures, tiles, flooring and siding

Furnaces, sinks, toilets, bathtubs and dishwashers

A washer and dryer

Televisions and various other tools

Robert Webber, 36, is charged with breaking and entering (x12), theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property and breach of recognizance (x30).

Webber remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019. Investigators continue to process the recovered property to try and determine where the property came from.

Investigators looking for surveillance images from public in connection to recent violent crime scenes

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section is hoping residential surveillance cameras in two neighborhoods could contain critical information that may help to progress a pair of investigations. Investigators are asking residents who live near two recent violent crime scenes in the neighborhoods of Montrose in northeast Edmonton and The Orchards by Ellerslie in the city’s far southeast, to contact police if they have residential surveillance, or even vehicle dash cams, that may contain critical footage of potential suspects.

Last Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, 59-year-old Barbara Nelson died in hospital of blunt force trauma, following a violent home invasion at a home near 119 Avenue and 61 Street. Last night, a young adult male was found with undisclosed injuries outside of a residence on Crabapple Crescent in The Orchards of Ellerslie. He was rushed to hospital, where he would succumb to his injuries shortly thereafter.

While these acts of violence have undoubtedly shaken both neighbourhoods, investigators believe the two deaths were targeted, not random occurrences, and are unrelated.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office has since scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday regarding the death of the 24-year-old male found on Crabapple Crescent Monday evening.

Investigators are urging anyone who may have surveillance images of either crime scene and/or the streets leading into or out of those respective locations to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

Police investigating early-morning traffic fatality on Yellowhead

The EPS Major Collision Investigations Section continues to investigate a traffic fatality that occurred on Yellowhead Trail eastbound early this morning.

Northwest Division patrol members initially responded to a 911 collision call at approximately 2:40 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019.

It was reported to police that a 69-year-old male was operating a 2008 Ford Escape and travelling eastbound on Yellowhead Trail in the inner and middle lanes near 149 Street.

At the same time, a 29-year-old male was operating a 2014 Freightliner semi-tractor-trailer unit and was transporting a full load, while travelling eastbound in the outside lane (next to the shoulder).

The Ford Escape is alleged to have then suddenly changed lanes, moving directly in front of tractor-trailer unit and in to the outside lane, when it was struck by the semi, sending it off the road near 142 Street on the Yellowhead.

Initially, the 69-year-old driver of the Ford Escape appeared to have only sustained minor injuries while on scene. The male was then taken to hospital, where his condition deteriorated. He eventually succumbed to his injuries later this morning.

It is unknown at this time whether the 69-year-old male died from injuries incurred as a result of the collision, or whether he had a pre-existing medical condition.

The semi-truck driver and his passenger did not suffer any injuries. Damages to the semi are estimated at $5,000. Damages to the Escape are estimated at $10,000. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the collision.

Anyone with information about this fatal collision is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.

Police seeking witnesses to reported road rage incident

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking witnesses to a road rage incident that reportedly took place in west Edmonton last week.

At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, the driver of a red Acura EL that was heading eastbound on Whitemud Drive reportedly merged in front of a black Dodge Ram truck travelling in the same direction. Both vehicles were heading towards the exit ramp from Whitemud Drive eastbound to Anthony Henday Drive southbound.  After passing the truck, the male driver of the Acura reported that the driver of the truck began to honk at and tailgate his sedan. The sedan then reportedly pulled over to the shoulder of the off-ramp to let the truck pass. After passing, the truck allegedly came to a stop in front of the Acura and an object was thrown at the sedan from the truck.

While continuing southbound on Anthony Henday Drive, it was reported to police that the truck would not let the Acura pass and forced it off of the road into the ditch west of the freeway. A male passenger then reportedly exited the truck and began running after the sedan on foot.

After returning to the roadway on the 62 Avenue exit off-ramp, the Acura was allegedly followed by the truck westbound along 62 Avenue and northbound on 215 Street near the Granville neighbourhood. Both vehicles reportedly came to a stop at a red light on 215 Street at the intersection between the River Cree Casino and Costco.  The male passenger of the truck then allegedly exited the vehicle again, approached the Acura and an altercation occurred. The truck was last seen heading northbound on 215 Street past Whitemud Drive.

Investigators are concerned about the aggressive nature of this incident and are hopeful that anyone who witnessed it will come forward to police.

The truck is described as a newer model (2010-2016) black Dodge Ram. The truck reportedly had an Alberta license plate, but the number was obscured by snow.

The driver of the truck is described as a white female approximately 35-years-old.

The passenger of the truck is described as a white male, 30-50 years-old with a heavier build and grey hair that was tied into a bun.

Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.

TRAP team arrests and charges 236 people with auto theft in 2018

The Edmonton Police Service’s Targeted Response to Auto-theft Prevention (TRAP) team charged 236 people with auto-theft related offences and recovered 218 vehicles in 2018.

In only its second year of operation, TRAP’s impact on auto theft in Edmonton was significant, as members of the EPS Unit recovered more than $4,641, 000 in stolen vehicles.

“These numbers certainly demonstrate the progress that our team is making,” says Sgt. Quinton Cruise, of the EPS TRAP team.

“Unfortunately, there’s no shortage of work for our members these days, though it’s certainly rewarding to bring more and more of these stolen auto investigations to a positive conclusion.”

In many cases, says Cruise, the vehicle stolen is a crime of opportunity, and one that is preventable.

“Criminals are often scoping out their targets beforehand, looking for vehicles left unlocked or running in driveways and parking lots across the city. We will continue to message and attempt to raise awareness with the public throughout the year.”

TRAP members laid 1,035 new auto-theft related charges this year against 236 individuals, while executing 392 warrants. Investigators also recovered six utility cargo trailers, three travel trailers, one boat trailer, one boat, an excavator and skid steer and one ATV.

A total of 45 weapons (20 firearms and replica weapons) and 79 stolen licence plates were also recovered by TRAP.

Anyone with information regarding suspects involved with stolen autos is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

Major collision officers investigating early moring collision on 91 Street

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Section (MCIS) was called out to a two-vehicle collision this morning on 91 Street.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. today, Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, police were dispatched to the northbound lanes of 91 Street, north of Edwards Drive SW, on the report of a collision. Upon further investigation officers determined a black Ford F-150, operated by a 58-year-old male, was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of 91 Street at a high rate of speed. A black Kia Soul, operated by a 28-year-old female, was travelling northbound on 91 Street approximately 150 meters north of Edwards Drive at the same time, when the two vehicles collided.

Witnesses at the scene provided first-aid assistance to both drivers until EMS arrived. Both drivers were treated and transported to hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.

Although the investigation is in its early stages, MCIS investigators believe impairment was a factor in this collision with respect to both drivers. Investigators also believe the F-150’s speed played a role.

The investigation continues.

Checkstop kept busy over holidays and throughout 2018

Members of the EPS Impaired Driving Unit were kept busy this holiday season charging 59 drivers with impaired driving.

“This is a marked increase over our 2017 holiday Checkstop numbers,” says EPS Sgt. Rob Davis, noting that 42 motorists were arrested and charged with impaired driving last year during the holidays.

“Undoubtedly, this is in part due to an increased number of officer-citizen contacts made throughout this year’s holiday Checkstop campaign. Regardless, it continues illustrate that we still have a lot of work to do collectively as a society.”

That trend continued throughout 2018 where 149 citizens were arrested and charged with impaired driving, an increase of more than 17% over 2017, when 127 motorists were arrested and charged with impaired driving.

The Edmonton Police Service coordinates Checkstop campaigns throughout the year, including a number of events across the city over the holiday season.

The EPS Checkstop program involves static lines and roving patrols across the city looking for impaired drivers. While it is aimed at detecting impaired drivers and removing them from the road, a large component is also aimed at educating the public of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

The Checkstop campaign enhances other EPS impaired driving enforcement efforts such as Target All Drunk Drivers (TADD, which involves mobile enforcement near entertainment areas), as well as Curb the Danger (citizens reporting impaired drivers by calling 911), and helps to make Edmonton’s streets safer for all citizens.

The highest breath sample given during the 2018 New Year’s Eve Checkstop was 150mg%. The 21-year-old male driver was consequently arrested for impaired driving. Additionally during December, Checkstop members also handed out a total of 57 Graduated Licence Suspensions this holiday season, an increase of 17 over the number of GL Suspensions handed out in 2017 (40). Two Drug Recognition Expert Evaluations (DRE) were also completed.

Comparative Checkstop/TADD results for 2017 and 2018 are included below, as are Curb the Danger results for December 2018 and the entire year.
