Pedestrian succumbs to injuries sustained from Jan. 22nd collision

An elderly man has succumbed to injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross 97 Street on Jan. 22, 2014.

It was reported that at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Jan. 22, a 94-year-old male stepped off the west curb and attempted to cross 97 Street just south of 107A Avenue.



The pedestrian was then allegedly struck by a south-bound vehicle and subsequently fell to the ground and hit his head.



He was treated by EMS paramedics on scene and taken to hospital, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries earlier today, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.



The file is being examined by the EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit, though charges are not anticipated, as investigators believe the male was not attempting to cross 97 Street at a marked crosswalk.

Additional sex charges laid against Edmonton man for pool incidents

An Edmonton man charged with two counts of sexual assault early this month is now facing additional sex-related charges for two incidents that are alleged to have occurred in the summer of 2009.

It was reported that Christopher Herodek, 48, inappropriately touched two, pre-teen females who swam by the accused at north and west-end recreation centre pools in the summer of 2009.



Herodek is charged with two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference.



Investigators laid similar charges against Herodek earlier this month, for two incidents that are alleged to have occurred on Dec. 22, 2013 and Dec. 23, 2013.

Three facing murder-related charges in connection with Remand death

Homicide Section investigators have charged three Remand Centre inmates with the murder of Curtis Dale Hill on Christmas eve, at the north-side correctional holding facility.

Grant Lewis, 31, and Ryan Prystay, 30, are charged with first degree murder and Matthew Anderson, 29, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.



Autopsy results concluded that Hill, 34, died from injuries related to blunt force trauma and the manner in which he died was by homicide.



Background:


Homicide detectives were called out to the Remand Centre at approximately 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013. Witnesses told police an altercation occurred between inmates in a cell.



Paramedics were subsequently called out and treated the male victim, who was pronounced dead on scene shortly thereafter.

Public information and warning: Sexual Offender Released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Daniel Keith McAdam, 38, was recently released from an Edmonton institution after he completed a three year, two month sentence for sexual assault and escape lawful custody.

McAdam is considered by police to pose a risk of significant harm to the community.


The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community. McAdam will be residing in the Edmonton area and will be closely monitored by the Behavioral Assessment Unit of the Edmonton Police Service.

Pedestrian struck, killed at marked crosswalk on 82 Avenue

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian, which occurred at a marked crosswalk at 101 Street and 82 Avenue earlier this afternoon.

Southwest Division Patrol members responded to the collision at approximately 12:20 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 27, 2014. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male in his mid-20s on the ground, after allegedly being struck by a vehicle.



Witnesses told police that a Chevy Cobalt was travelling northbound on 101 Street and was making a left-hand turn onto 82 Avenue, when it allegedly struck a male pedestrian who was walking southbound across the avenue at a marked crosswalk.



The male was treated by EMS on scene and transported to hospital where he later died.



Although the investigation remains preliminary at this time, police believe that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the fatal collision. The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case.



Motorists travelling in the area are being asked to stay clear of 82 Avenue between 100 and 102 streets until further notice.

New Year’s shooting suspect turns himself in

On Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, Luqman Jama Osman, 24, wanted for several numerous firearms related offences, turned himself in at downtown division headquarters, accompanied by his lawyer.

Last week, the Edmonton Police Service had asked for the public’s assistance in locating the suspect in a non-injury shooting that occurred Jan. 1, 2014 at the Ethiopian-Canadian Community Association.


Background:
At approximately 5 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, Downtown Division officers responded to several reports of shots fired at a New Year's celebration attended by hundreds of people in the area of 105 Avenue and 115 Street.


Police discovered shots had been fired inside the building and outside on 115 Street. Investigations revealed an argument had broken out between several people before shots were fired. There were no injuries reported from the shooting.

Police swarm area and arrest sexual assault suspect

A 36-year-old male is in custody and facing sexual assault charges following a foot chase with police on the city’s south side last night, on the heels of two alleged incidents.

Southwest Division members responded to the area near 110 Street and 80 Avenue at approximately 7:40 p.m., Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, after receiving a report of a sexual assault.



A female complainant reported being pushed to the ground and groped in a sexual manner by a male suspect, who had then fled the scene on foot.



A plain clothes police officer spotted the suspect in the act of allegedly sexually assaulting a second female complainant near 112 Street and University Avenue.



The member identified himself as a police officer, and a foot pursuit with the suspect ensued. Multiple EPS units flooded the area, and the suspect was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.



Daniel Leonard, 36, is charged with sexual assault (x2) and breach of probation (x2).

Sex assault charges laid in connection with pool incidents

An Edmonton man is facing sex-related charges in connection with two separate incidents that are alleged to have occurred prior to Christmas, at a recreation facility in Southwest Edmonton. It was reported that Christopher Herodek, 48, inappropriately touched two, pre-teen females who swam by the accused in a “lazy river” pool, at the recreation centre on Dec. 22, 2013 and Dec. 23, 2013.



Christopher has been charged with two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference.

Officer charged for alleged impaired driving while off-duty

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a sworn member in relation to an alleged off-duty impaired driving incident that took place on Nov. 18, 2013.

Following an investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch, charges were laid on Jan. 8, 2014.


Const. Kelly Fradley has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle pursuant to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada, and impaired operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content over 80 mg% pursuant to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.


The eight-year member is currently not assigned to operational policing.


As the matter is currently before the courts, the EPS will not be commenting further.
